SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 5, STONY BROOK 4
MIAMI - Paige Halliwill and Aubrie Shore each hit a home run and freshmen Willow Van Haren, Maddie Carney and Tegan Livesay combined for four no-hit shutout innings to send Southeast Missouri (3-2) to a 5-4 win over Stony Brook (1-4) Sunday morning.
After SEMO fell behind, 2-0, in the top of the first inning, Halliwill belted a two-run home run to right center to tie the game in the bottom half of the frame. For Halliwill, it was her team-high second homer this season.
SBU regained a 3-2 edge in the second when Brooke Dye singled and a throwing error on the next play gave the Seawolves runners at second and third. Following a Alicia Orosco walk, Kyla McFarland hit into a fielder's choice and Alyssa Costello struck out before Corinne Badger walked in a run with the bases loaded.
Then, in the bottom of the third, Shore delivered the biggest blow of the game.
Sydney Dennis led off with a hit for the second-straight time when she singled through the right side to start the bottom of the third. Halliwill walked behind her and Shore drove the third pitch of her at-bat over the center field wall putting SEMO ahead, 5-3. It was the first home run of the season for Shore, the reigning Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year.
With two outs in the top half of the fourth inning, Costello scored Emily Reinstein to make it a one-run ballgame.
Van Haren threw one scoreless inning before giving way to Carney in the fifth. She pitched perfect innings in the fifth and sixth. Livesay took over in the seventh and retired the side to nail down the win.
Delaney Kell (1-0), who got SEMO out of a bases loaded jam with a strikeout in the second inning, was credited with her first victory in relief. Kell tossed 1.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
Livesay earned her first career save with her 1-2-3 seventh.
Dennis went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Halliwill finished at 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI. Shore, who posted seven hits in the tournament, went 1-for-2 with a run and three RBI.
Dennis, Halliwill and Shore accounted for four of the Redhawks five hits out of the top three spots in the lineup.
SEMO posted a third-place showing at the four-team Felsberg Invitational.
BINGHAMTON 2, SIUE 1
DELAND, Fla. - SIUE softball closed out the Frank Griffin Classic with a 2-1 loss Sunday to Binghamton.
SIUE dropped to 1-4 and next heads to Texas for a three-game series against Texas A&M Commerce. A doubleheader is scheduled for next Saturday followed by a single game next Sunday.
The Cougars, who recorded six hits, scored the fifth inning as pinch hitter Madison Kearns delivered a base hit up the middle to drive home Herron. Herron led the Cougars with two hits. Anna Henderson, Lauryn Yslava and Kearns each had one apiece.
Binghamton scored its two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a single by pinch hitter Emma Lawson.
BUFFALO 10, LINDENWOOD 1 (5)
SAN ANTONIO - Lindenwood softball (2-3, 0-0 OVC) dropped their final game at the Univeristy of Incarnate Word Kickoff Classic by a final score of 10-1 (5) against Buffalo (3-2). The Lions went 2-3 during their opening weekend of the 2024 season.
On Sunday, Lindenwood was held to just four hits and a .181 batting average as a team. Mya Bethany continued her hot start to the 2024 season after going 1-3 at the plate notching her seventh hit of the season. Jolie McMinn, Dallis Darnell and Chloe Honcar all had hits on the day.
Avery Wapp (L, 0-1) suffered the loss on Sunday after throwing the first two innings allowing four runs on three hits while striking out three. Amanda Weyh came on in relief of Wapp giving up six runs and striking out three. Buffalo's Alexis Lucyshyn was the winning pitcher after throwing all five innings.
Lindenwood scored first in the top of the second inning after a McMinn and Darnell both singled to get the ball rolling. After a fielder's choice by Irelynn West,McMinn came around to score. LU would leave the bases loaded to end the inning.
Buffalo's offense posted nine hits on Sunday scoring 10 runs and eight RBI. Madison Fernimen had three RBI for the Bulls while Sara Kelly went 2-3 with two RBI. BU scored four in the second, three in the fourth and three in the fifth to secure the win.
EASTERN ILLINOIS 5, PROVIDENCE 4
YOUNGSVILLE, La. - Rachel Kaufman and Sophie Cerveny combined to drive in all five runs on Sunday as Eastern Illinois softball went 5-0 during the opening weekend of the season with a 5-4 win over Providence College.
Kaufman delivered the first run of the game for EIU with an RBI double to score Abbey Crain in the bottom of the first.
Providence tied the game in the third on an RBI single by Rachael Petrarca.
Kaufman put the Panthers ahead for good in the bottom of the frame with a two-run homer. Cerveny pushed the EIU lead to 5-1 three batters later with a two-run double scoring Briana Gonzalez and Marama Makea.
The offense proved to be enough for EIU as pitchers Olivia Price (2-0) and McKenzie Oslanzi (Save 1) combined to allow seven hits and one earned run in the win.
The Friars tacked on one run each in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings with all of them unearned as EIU had five fielding errors on the day. Emma Douma led Providence going 2-for-4 at the plate. Briana De La Fuente (0-1) suffered the loss in the circle as Providence is 1-4 on the year.
Kaufman was 3-for-3 at the plate while Makea going 2-for-3.
LAMAR 6, TENNESSEE STATE 1
LAKE CHARLES, La. - Sophomore Onnika Spencer went 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI for Tennessee State in a 7-1 loss to Lamar on Sunday. It was the final game of the Cowgirl Classic for the Tigers.
Sophomore Holly Ayala (0-0) started and took the loss in the circle for Tennessee State (1-4).
In the batter's box, the Tigers were paced by Spencer, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a home run and an RBI. Laila Armstrong and Peyton Fointno were the other two TSU players to pick up hits.
The Tigers were trailing 2-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Spencer put Tennessee State on the board with a two-out solo home run off for her first of the season. The Tigers were unable to get any closer, as Lamar added five runs to their tally on the way to a 7-1 final.
