EASTERN ILLINOIS 14, BRADLEY 9
CHARLESTON, Ill. - The Eastern Illinois baseball team (12-20, 6-6 OVC) defeated Bradley (10-23, 4-8 MVC) 14-9 in another midweek barn burner at Coaches Stadium on Tuesday. The game was called early in the top of the ninth due to thunderstorms moving into the area.
After EIU left two stranded in scoring position in the bottom of the first inning, Bradley struck first with a Logan Delgado solo home run to right field in the second.
The Panthers responded in the bottom of the second as Quade Peters drove in a run with a single up the middle and scored on an error to make the score 2-1.
The Braves came right back with three runs in the third to regain the lead, but Eastern exploded for seven runs in the next at bat to surge ahead for good.
Six different Panthers recorded RBIs in the inning, including Joey Hagen who got the scoring started with a two RBI double down the right field line, which gave him his first RBIs of the season.
Bradley cut three runs off the deficit in the fourth, but a Dylan Drumke two RBI double in the bottom of the fourth kept the Braves at arm's length.
With two outs in the top of the fifth, the game was put on hold due to lightning being detected in the area. After a nearly one-hour delay, the game resumed with Lukas Touma getting a swinging strikeout to retire the side.
Each team would score a few more runs, including a Danny Infante solo homer in the eighth, before the game was called in the top of the ninth due to severe weather.
Slater Wilcox (2-0) was credited with the win, while Cooper Chinn (0-1) suffered the loss.
Dylan Drumke was the Panther's primary run producer with three RBI. Joey Hagen and Quade Peters also had multi-RBI outings with two apiece.
Hagen went 3-4 at the plate, including a pair of doubles, after not recording a hit in any of his previous eight at-bats this season.
Lucas Loos extended his on-base streak to 27 games with a 2-5, one RBI performance.
MOREHEAD STATE 7, MARSHALL 2
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Morehead State got contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Eagles put seven runs on the board and defeat the Marshall Thundering Herd 7-2 Tuesday.
Joe Rotkis (1-1) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Morehead State (20-16). The right-hander went three shutout innings while giving up three hits, allowing one walk and striking out four. Junior Will Grimmett also made an impact on the mound for the Eagles, throwing two shutout innings while allowing no hits, with no walks and three strikeouts.
At the plate, the Eagles were led by senior Roman Kuntz, who went 1-for-5 on the day with a home run and three RBI. Nick Gooden put together a standout performance as well, going 1-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Freshman Hayden Robbins also helped out for Morehead State, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.
Trailing 1-0, the Eagles first put runs on the board in the third inning. Morehead State scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Gooden.
The Thundering Herd then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 3-2 until the Eagles expanded their advantage in the seventh. Morehead State scored three runs, all of them coming on a three-run homer off the bat of Kuntz, scoring Robbins and senior Colton Becker, which brought the score to 6-2 in favor of the Eagles.
Morehead State kept Marshall without a run before building their lead to 7-2 the following inning. The Eagles pushed across a run on Robbins' two-out RBI double. The score remained 7-2 for the rest of the game, as Morehead State coasted to the win.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 15, MURRAY STATE 8
MURRAY, Ky. - Head Coach Andy Sawyers picked up his 200th career victory as the head coach of the Redhawks as Southeast Missouri (19-18) picked up a 15-8 victory over Murray State (22-14) from Johnny Reagan Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Third baseman Caleb Corbin led the Redhawks offense with a pair of home runs finishing 3-for-5 at the plate with 4 RBIs. Corbin hit his second and third home runs of the season and marked the 60th and 61st home runs of the season for SEMO.
SEMO pounded out 16 hits and scored 15 runs thanks in-large part to an eight run sixth inning.
RHP Payton Lawrence was sharp in his second-straight Tuesday start. Lawrence, who started last week at Southern Illinois, pitched 2.0 innings without allowing a hit or a run. He faced eight Racers in the outing.
The Redhawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a four run third inning where each run was registered with two outs in the inning.
After Ty Stauss reached on an infield single, Josh Cameron was hit with a pitch and third baseman Chance Resetich stepped in. Resetich lined a single into left field to score Stauss from second base for a 1-0 lead.
A passed ball by MSU's Alan Roulette allowed Cameron to score to make it 2-0. A walk to Bryce Cannon would bring catcher Nolan Ackerman up and he would rope a double off the center field wall to bring in both Resetich and Cannon to make it 4-0 Redhawks.
In the home half, MSU cut into SEMO's lead with a three-run home run by Dustin Mercer off LHP Ethan Osborne to make it 4-3 Redhawks.
Another three-run home run by MSU's catcher, Taylor Howell, gave the Racers a six run third inning to take a 6-4 lead into the fourth inning.
The Redhawks utilized a defensive miscue by the Racers in the visitor's fourth inning as Mugan came into score off the bat of Ty Stauss to get to within a run.
SEMO would score the run in the fourth, and then eight in the sixth, to score nine unanswered runs beginning with Caleb Corbin's second home run of the season. His solo blast tied it in an inning where the Redhawks hit around in the batting order.
With the bases loaded, Bryce Cannon drew a walk and Nolan Ackerman was plunked with a pitch to score two runs.
Designated hitter Keoni Coloma, with the bases loaded, roped a double down the right field line to clear the bases. Corbin's second hit of the inning scored Coloma from second base and the Redhawks led 12-6.
An RBI base hit by Michael Mugan scored the final run of the inning as the Redhawks led 13-6 after the sixth inning.
Corbin's second blast of the day came after a leadoff triple by Coloma in the eighth inning to add two more runs to the board for SEMO as the Redhawks led 15-7 heading to the ninth inning.
WESTERN KENTUCKY 2, SOUTHERN INDIANA 1
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - University of Southern Indiana Baseball lost hard fought game with Western Kentucky University, 2-1, Tuesday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI is 15-22, while WKU goes to 26-12.
The Screaming Eagles' offense was stymied for the first seven innings, while WKU built a 2-0 lead on just two hits. The Hilltopper runs came courtesy of a home run in the second inning and a bases-loaded hit batter in in the fifth.
USI stayed in the game with good pitching from six different pitchers which blanked the Hilltoppers for seven of the nine frames and struck out eight hitters. USI junior right-hander Tyler Hutson (Villa Hills, Kentucky) (0-4) started and took the loss for the Eagles, going two innings and allowing the second inning home run.
The Eagles made a run at WKU in the eighth inning, cutting the deficit to 2-1. USI junior third baseman Ricardo Van Grieken (Venezuela) reached on an error and would score from first on a two-out double by senior designated hitter Tucker Ebest (Austin, Texas), who also took third on a second WKU error in the inning before being stranded to end the frame.
After a USI held the Hilltoppers in the top of the ninth, USI went three-up and three-down as WKU closed out the 2-1 final.
USI junior centerfielder Terrick Thompson-Allen (Sioux City, Iowa) led the Eagles at the plate with a three-for-four performance and was the only Eagle to have multiple hits. Thompson-Allen has a team-high 18 multi-hit games this season.
