MOREHEAD STATE 1, DETROIT MERCY 0
MOREHEAD, Ky. - The Morehead State soccer team continued a pair of streaks as it defeated visiting Detroit Mercy 1-0 on Sunday at the MSU Soccer Field.
The win was the Eagles' second straight and improved their overall record to 2-1-1, which is the best opening mark since going 2-0-2 to begin the 2014 campaign. The squad also raised its school-record home unbeaten streak to nine. The previous record was six, which was set in 2010. The past four games of the current streak have all been wins and the Blue and Gold has outscored its opponents 6-1 over that time.
Detroit Mercy (0-4-0) held a slight advantage in shots (9 to 8) and kept the ball in the Morehead State defensive zone for 51 percent of the game. The Eagles did have an edge in possession percentage (53 to 47).
Neither team scored in the first half as the Eagles held a 3-2 lead in shots. However, a little more than 11 minutes into the second period, as has been the case all season, it was a newcomer who got MSU on the board.
Freshman forward Carlie Thurmond played a long ball behind the Titans' defensive that freshman forward Ava Peck ran onto and collected at the midfield stripe. Peck took three dribbles and beat Detroit Mercy's goalkeeper, Marisa Silver, 1v1 as she came out to challenge Peck, who then flipped the ball just over the head of a sliding Silver at 56:08.
All four of MSU's goals this season have come from newcomers. Sunday's was the first official one of Peck's career.
Thurmond's assist was the first of her MSU tenure, but the third game this season she has recorded at least one point for the Eagles. Thurmond's five points are the most by a Morehead State freshman through four contests since Ashley Ritchie registered seven in 2016.
The two teams combined for seven shots on goal, with neither side mounting a serious scoring threat outside of the Peck tally.
Morehead State took five corner kicks to UDM's two. The hosts had 16 fouls to the visitors' five, and both teams were flagged for being offside twice.
Peck and junior midfielder Kennedy Baquero each led MSU with two shots, while Detroit Mercy also had two attempts from Abbey Lodato, Adriana Mroz and Amelia Streberger.
Eagle freshman goalkeeper Claire Cress recorded her first career shutout, making three saves in the process. Silver went the distance in the Titans' net and also collected three saves.
It was the second victory in the series for Morehead State, which also won last year's meeting in Detroit 5-2.
EASTERN KENTUCKY 1, SOUTHERN INDIANA 0
RICHMOND, Ky. - University of Southern Indiana Women's Soccer came up just short in the front end of its two-game road swing Sunday afternoon, falling 1-0 at Eastern Kentucky University.
Southern Indiana (0-2-1) caught an unlucky break early on, as an Eastern Kentucky (1-3-0) shot near the penalty spot tipped off the glove of redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Anna Markland (Hoover, Alabama), off the post, and into the goal.
The Colonels, a high-volume shooting squad on Sunday, continued to pressure and challenge USI. The Screaming Eagles' defense stood up to the challenge to keep the score a one-goal difference.
USI gained possession and flipped the field position into the attacking third in the 25th minute. Senior midfielder Maggie Duggan (Defiance, Missouri) put up USI's first shot of the game just before the hydration break, which was saved by EKU's senior goalkeeper Marah Krick.
Later, the Screaming Eagles had another good opportunity when junior defender Brynn Quick (Cottage Grove, Minnesota) sent a free kick from near midfield that went straight toward the goal and forced the Colonel's netminder to make a diving save. Following an impressive save on the other end by Markland deep into the first half, Quick had another free kick on target and saved. Sunday was the second consecutive match that Quick recorded two shots on goal.
Looking to build on its 1-0 halftime advantage, Eastern Kentucky continued its aggressive attack with many shots in the second half. USI's defense continued to be stout by blocking several shots.
Markland and senior keeper Zoe Lintner (Wildwood, Missouri), who entered the match in the middle of the second half for the last 26-plus minutes, also continued to stand in the way of EKU's attempts toward any insurance with multiple saves.
Despite the solid defensive effort to keep the Screaming Eagles within reach of the 1-0 difference, a breakthrough reward would not come for USI. Southern Indiana had another potential tying chance on a corner kick in the middle of the second half when a header by junior midfielder Peyton Murphy (Bargersville, Indiana) could not find an opening across the goal line.
Southern Indiana faced 22 shots on the defensive end from Eastern Kentucky but held the Colonels to eight shots on goal. USI finished with eight shots and four on target. Junior forward Payton Seymour (Louisville, Kentucky) tied Quick with a team-high two shot attempts in the match. The combination of Markland and Lintner between the posts totaled six saves, four and two, respectively.
SIUE 0, MISSOURI STATE 0
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Samaya Hogg and Abby Haskell combined for 11 saves in goal Sunday as SIUE women's soccer played to a scoreless tie at Missouri State.
SIUE moved to 1-0-2 for the season while Missouri State is now 1-1-1. The Cougars are now idle until next Sunday at Purdue Fort Wayne.

Haskell played the first 45 minutes in goal for the Cougars and recorded four saves. Hogg finished with a career-high seven saves over the final 45 minutes. It was the first shutout of the season for SIUE.
Missouri State finished with 25 shots, including six from Maggie O'Keefe.
UT MARTIN 1, AUSTIN PEAY 1
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team earned its second straight draw after a 1-1 decision at in-state rival Austin Peay this afternoon.
UT Martin led the Governors in shots (13-11) and targeted six attempts on goal. Izzy Patterson scored her first goal of the season by launching a screamer to the back of the net in the 14th minute. It marked the seventh goal in the career of the senior out of St. Louis, Mo.
Peyton Cook matched a career-high seven shots and put three on goal for the Skyhawks, who are now 0-1-2 on the season. Patterson sent three shots away and two on goal while Alberte Amby (two shots, one on goal) and Nyeemah Prescod-Beckles (one shot) additionally contributed to the UT Martin offensive attack.
Goalkeeper Mac Titus played the full 90 minutes and made a match-high seven stops. Parker Gelinas, Allie Buchmann, Shayla Addington and Patterson all went the full distance in the contest.
The Skyhawks unleashed four shots on target in the opening 20 minutes and cashed in with Patterson's long range blast that caught the Austin Peay defense off guard. All four of Titus' first-half saves came in the first 25-plus minutes as the senior from Chelsea, Ala. carried a shutout into the intermission.
The Governors (2-0-1) were able to equalize the match off a corner kick in the 50th minute, knotting the score at 1-all on the first shot attempt from either side of the second half. Titus recovered to make three more saves – thwarting Austin Peay scoring tries in the 56th, 61st and 77th minutes. UT Martin's Cook (62nd minute) and Amby (81st minute) guided potential go-ahead shots on goal but the Governors made tough saves to result in the draw.
PURDUE FORT WAYNE 1, EASTERN ILLINOIS 0
CHARLESTON, Ill. - After both goalkeepers were able to turn away several good scoring chances by each team, Purdue Fort Wayne finally broke though in the final 11 minutes to pick up a 1-0 win over Eastern Illinois on Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field.

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - On Sunday afternoon, the Lindenwood women's soccer team took on the Kansas City Roos. The Lions would fall 3-0 to the Roos, moving to 2-2-0 on the season.
In the first half, The Roos were able to strike first. The Roos would find the back of the net off a rebound, in the 25th minute. Kansas City would have 12 shots on net, while the Lions had four.
Jordan Hollingsworth would make the start in net, making four saves. Caroline Ritter would relieve Hollingsworth in the latter part of the match, making one save.
MTSU 3, TENNESSEE TECH 2
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Late goals in each half by the Tennessee Tech soccer team was ultimately not enough as the Golden Eagles were tripped up 3-2 in the latest edition of their rivalry with Middle Tennessee.
Tech (0-3-1) tied a season high with its two scores, finding the back of the net in the last minute of each stanza in the club's bid at a comeback Sunday evening. Trailing 2-0 in the final minute of the first, freshman Anna Baker helped give the Golden Eagles momentum going into the break with her first career goal in her first career match.
Former Blue Raider Skylar Williams notched her first-career assist after slipping around an MTSU defender on the right side of the box before flipping a perfect pass to Baker, who took care of the rest with a header home to cut the deficit to 2-1 with only 34 seconds remaining the period.
The Blue Raiders (1-2-0) would gather their two-goal edge back after scoring in the 70th minute to push the margin over the purple and gold to 3-1. Idun Kvaale, who assisted on the squad's first goal in the 10th minute, split the pipes with just over 20 minutes left. Emma Pettersen, who scored MTSU's first goal of the night, picked up the assist.
With their work cut out for them in the tilt's waning moments, déjà vu struck the Golden Eagles with more last-minute heroics to slice the deficit in half in the 90th minute. A redirection from Katie Toney knocked off Blue Raider keeper Demi Gronauer and toward a sprinting Allison Lee with nothing but net in sight. Lee capitalized on the opening by burying the chance with only 38 seconds left for her first goal of the season and fourth of her career.
A pair of early scores spelled trouble for the purple and gold after Middle Tennessee raced out to a quick beginning behind two goals within the first 16 minutes. Pettersen posted the first Blue Raider goal in the 10th minute before Manon Lebargy did the honors with an unassisted score in the 16th minute that extended MTSU's lead to 2-0.
The Blue Raiders outshot Tech 17-9 overall and 11-5 in the shots on-goal department. Pettersen paced the match with five total attempts, while Neve Renwick led the Golden Eagles with four shots and two tries on-point. The sophomore forward nearly had a chance to split the pipes late in the match after making a move to get past Gronauer in the final 3:30, but Blue Raider defender Emma Brown was able to spoil the Tech chance by knocking it away with the finish line potentially in sight.
Gronauer would end up with three saves, while Maggie Conrad secured eight stops for the purple and gold.
GRAND CANYON 4, LITTLE ROCK 1
PHOENIX, Ariz. - Several freshmen achieved career milestones as Maria Schuller scored her first career goal, Ruth Barragan earned a spot in the starting XI, and Emily Hauk made her collegiate debut.
Grand Canyon jumped out to a quick start with a goal in the 3rd minute of the match. The score remained 1-0 until the 32nd minute, when the Lopes added another goal. The Trojans ended the first half facing a 2-goal deficit. The second half mirrored the first, with Grand Canyon adding two more goals in the 56th and 68th minutes.
Despite the deficit, the Trojans fought until the end. In addition to Schuller, two other freshmen reached career milestones. Ruth Barragan earned her first start, playing 66 minutes in the Trojans' midfield. Emily Hauk made her collegiate debut as a substitute in the 74th minute, recording 5 saves with no goals allowed.
