GEORGIA STATE 2, LIBERTY 1
LYNCHBURG, Va. - In a hard-fought match Sunday afternoon at Osborne Stadium, the Georgia State Panthers broke a 1-1 tie with a goal during the 73rd minute to edge the Liberty Flames 2-1.
After a scoreless first half, Liberty struck for the game’s first and only goal when Georgia State goalkeeper Josh Hangi misplayed a ball inside the six-yard box less than five minutes into the second half. Forward Gora Gora pushed the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
With each team pressing on the attacking end throughout the second half, the Panthers not only found the equalizer but the go-ahead goal.
Liberty had several shot attempts during the final 15 minutes of play but could not tie the contest.
The Flames drop to 1-1-1 on the season. The Panthers move to 1-1-1.
DAYTON 4, SIUE 0
COLUMBUS, Ohio - SIUE men's soccer dropped its final game at Ohio State's Wolstein Classic, dropping a 4-0 decision to Dayton Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars are now 0-2-1. Dayton improved to 3-1-0 with the victory.
The Flyers led 1-0 at half before finding the back of the net three times in the second half.
Dayton missed its first opportunity to go on top. In the 18th minute the Flyers were awarded a penalty, but Geni Kanyane's shot was turned away by SIUE goalkeeper Rob Gjelaj to preserve the scoreless game.
Hjalti Sigurdsson put the Flyers on top with just 1:36 to play before halftime. After a half-volley attempt missed, the ball bounced into the middle of the box, where Sigurdsson redirected in with a low header to put Dayton up 1-0 at halftime.
Joseph Melto Quiah doubled the advantage in the 53rd minute when his left-footed shot from just outside the six-yard box hit the far post and caromed in.
Sigurdsson scored a second in the 64th minute off a corner kick. He had the second of consecutive headers after the initial corner. Less than two minutes later, the Flyers' Ethan Sassine stole a ball at the top of the 18-yard box and was able to push past Gjelaj for the fourth.
Dayton peppered the SIUE defense with 31 total shots including 15 on goal. Gjelaj made a season-high eight saves in 70 minutes in goal for the Cougars. Ethan Kornas played the final 20 minutes making the first two saves of his career.
Nacho Abeal had two of SIUE's nine shots. Patrick Coleman, Pavel Dashin, Nic Muench and Zach Renz each had shots on goals for the Cougars.
WESTERN ILLINOIS 2, QUINCY 0
MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois men's soccer squared off with Quincy in a Sunday evening matchup at John MacKenzie Alumni Field, with the Leathernecks emerging victorious. A first-half goal on a corner by captain Joel McIntyre gave the Leathernecks an early lead. The second half saw tensions rise between the two sides, as six cards were given out in the final 35 minutes of action.
The Leathernecks saw their first chance of the match early on in the sixth minute, as winger Tyler Philpott broke free and fired a shot on goal that led to a corner. Western got another chance on a corner about ten minutes later, and after a Quincy player deflected the service, the ball landed at the feet of Joel McIntyre, who slotted it away in the top-right corner to give the Leathernecks a one-nil lead.
Things stayed pretty quiet for the rest of the first half, as both sides had two corners apiece for the remainder of the match. Leatherneck keeper Micah Ramirez racked up four saves in the first half, denying any chance the Hawks had.
Western had a great opportunity to score early in the second, as Diego Porras played a great long ball to Liam Gainey, but Gainey was ruled just offside before receiving the pass. Gainey got another decent chance eight minutes later, but his attempt was saved by the Hawk keeper. As the Leathernecks continued to put pressure on the Quincy defense, Tyler Philpott had a great chance, firing a rocket towards the goal from inside the box, but a great save kept the match at one-nil.
Things started to intensify in the 70th minute, as Quincy received a yellow as a player was chirping at the head referee, and Porras got one a few minutes later on a tackle. The worst challenge of the game came two minutes later though, as Quincy's Joao Pedro Amaral kicked Porras square in the face going for a 50/50 ball, resulting in a straight red card. While Porras left injured, he re-entered just three minutes later.
The Leathernecks immediately capitalized on the injury, as Jimmy Baars took the injury free kick from about 40 yards out and put in a perfect ball to Xavier Gagnon, who headed it towards the far post and in. The two-nil score held for the rest of the game, but tensions were still high as Western received two yellows in the final six minutes. Micah Ramirez made an outstanding save in the 81st, extending and deflecting a shot that was headed towards the top corner. Ramirez finished with six saves on the night.
