SIUE 2, UIW 0
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE men's soccer ran its unbeaten streak to five games Sunday, defeating UIW 2-0 on Senior Day at Korte Stadium.
The Cougars improved to 3-2-2 in Ohio Valley Conference play and 4-8-2 overall. The win moved SIUE in sole possession of third place in the league.
UIW, which now has an eight-game winless streak, dropped to 0-4-3 in OVC play and 4-6-5 overall.
Evan Howard added to his team-leading point total with a goal and an assist for the day. Howard opened the scoring in the 40th minute. SIUE was awarded a penalty kick when Murray Peart was pushed in the 18-yard box. Howard's penalty was saved by UIW goalkeeper Alejandro DeLaTorre, but the rebound came back to Howard, who tapped it in for his seventh goal of the season and SIUE led 1-0 at halftime.
The Cougar defense withstood a charge from the Cardinals in the second half without yielding a shot on goal.
Howard set up SIUE's second goal in the 81st minute. Working towards the corner flag on the left side, Howard floated a ball along the end line, which came back to the edge of the six-yard box. Peart redirected inside the near post for his first career goal and a 2-0 advantage.
Overall UIW outshot SIUE 14-8. The Cardinals had three shots on goal, all coming in the first half.
SIUE goalkeeper Noah Schediweiler made three saves on his way to his fourth shutout in the last five games.
LINDENWOOD 2, HCU 1
ST. CHARLES, Mo. - On a day where the Lindenwood Men's Soccer team honored 13 Seniors, the Lions came up big to send the Seniors off with a 2-1 win over Houston Christian on Sunday afternoon. Lindenwood (12-1-2, 5-1-1 OVC) improved to 8-0-1 on the season at home with the win, and extended their lead in the OVC standings picking up three points to bring their conference total to 16.
The Lions wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the first half as Alander Soares scored his fourth goal of the season eight minutes into the opening frame off assists by Luke Neely and Jozef Palushaj. Neely delivered a long through ball up the left side of the field to Palushaj, who sent a pass right to Soares down the middle of the field. Soares received the ball in stride and beat his Huskie defender giving him a one-on-one with the HCU goalkeeper. The Sophomore Forward from Brazil sent a shot to the far right corner of the goal and was able to sneak it by the goalkeeper to give the Lions the 1-0 advantage early on.
Lindenwood's defense picked up right where they left off in the second half against Incarnate Word on Thursday, limiting Houston Christian to just four shots in the first 45 minutes with none being on target. In the second half, HCU tied the game in the 63rd minute after a Lindenwood defender slipped on a through ball sent by Joby Reid. HCU's D'Alessandro Herrera gathered the pass from Reid and was able to get around Gavin Roberts to tap in a goal to make it a 1-1 contest.
The Lions responded later in the half at the 80th minute with a goal of their own to take a 2-1 lead. Quinn Connolly created a turnover in HCU's half of the field and fired a through ball up the right sideline to Ethan Blake. After getting around his defender, Blake delivered a pass in the middle of the field to Matteo Landais, who gathered the ball, switched the foot he wanted to take the shot with, and fired it to the top left corner of the goal past a diving Huskie goalkeeper to give the Lions the lead.
Prior to the goal scored by Landais, Houston Christian threatened to score in the 79th minute, one minute prior to the game-winning goal being scored. The Huskies got four shots off in a span of 15 seconds, but the defense for Lindenwood stepped up, blocking three of the four shots to keep the game tied.
Gavin Roberts made three saves in the contest, and allowed his fourth goal of the season in seven games played. The victory also marks the first time this season that Lindenwood has won a game after being out shot, as the Huskies recorded 17 shots compared to the Lions 13.
