ITTA BENA, Miss. - Lindenwood baseball (2-4, 0-0 OVC) went a perfect 2-0 against Mississippi Valley State (1-2, 0-0 SWAC) in a Saturday double-header. It marked the first two wins for the Lions this season as they enter week two of the 2025 season.
Lindenwood started off Saturday scoring 19 runs marking their most runs scored in a single game since the 2023 inaugural Division I season against Tennessee Tech. LU scored 19 runs on 12 hits with two errors while Mississippi Valley scored three runs on five hits with three errors.
Starting pitcher Josh Newell (W, 1-1) picked up his first win of the season after throwing 5.0 innings allowing three runs, two earned, while striking out three. Carson Subbert tossed the final two innings blanking the Delta Devils with three strikeouts.
Bryson Arnette went 3-5 at the plate against Mississippi Valley State with three RBI and two runs scored. Charlie Isom-McCall also went 3-5 while driving in two runs and had hist first double in a Lindenwood uniform. Six different Lions drove in a run with five of those having multiple RBI.
After a quiet first two innings of the ball game, Lindenwood drove in the first two runs of the ball game in the third inning. Arnette had his first RBI single of the game to drive home the first run while Sam Grunberg added an RBI sac fly. Newell went three-up three-down in the bottom half of the third.
The Lions' offense exploded for seven runs in the top of the fourth on five hits. Isom-McCall scored the third run on a pass ball to start the inning after doubling to start the third. Arnette added a two RBI single in his next plate appearance while Jake Radosevich added a sac fly. After Arnette scored on a pass ball, Isom-McCall added the final two RBI of the inning with a single to left field to put the Lions ahead 9-0.
The Delta Devils added their only three runs of the ball game in the bottom half of the fourth off of Newell. Lindenwood had their second seven run inning in the sixth off of three hits and two errors by Mississippi Valley. Tyler Thompson, Filip Sarota Radosevich and Grunberg (2) all had an RBI in the inning as they led 16-3.
Lindenwood scored their final three runs in the top of the seventh off of two RBI from Sarota and a wild pitch from the Delta Devils as they picked up a 19-3 win to start the day.
It was a one-hitter for the Lions during game two during their 7-0 victory over Mississippi Valley State after starting pitcher Eli Brown threw 8.0 innings allowing one hit while striking out a career-high 12 batters. Brown's 12 strikeouts are the most all-time in a single game during the Division I era and is the second most in program history (14 in 2017 by Brendan Feldmann).
Lindenwood started off game two by scoring two runs in the top of the first after a two RBI double by Sarota. Sarota had a total of four RBI on Saturday. Brown added two strikeouts to end the first.
The Lions responded in the fourth inning scoring five of their seven runs in the inning on five hits, all with two outs. Grunberg scored Brodie Short after he had a double. Jakc Meyer and Kam Edwards then added back-to-back RBI doubles to bring home two more runs. Isom-McCall scored on a wild pitch and Thompson added another RBI as the Lions led 7-0 after the inning.
The No-Hit bid for Brown ended in the eight inning after a single to third base. Easton Rakers would throw the final inning as the Lions wrapped up their undefeated Saturday.
MOREHEAD STATE 6-0, ST. BONAVENTURE 3-1
LEXINGTON, S.C. - Junior JJ Dutton delivered a one-out, walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the seventh Saturday as the Morehead State baseball team won 1-0 to salvage a doubleheader split with St. Bonaventure at Lexington County (S.C.) Stadium. The Eagles' pitchers only allowed three hits in game one but walked nine as the Bonnies claimed that contest 6-3.
Morehead State sits at 3-2 now, while SBU is 4-2. The games were moved south to South Carolina due to the continued snow and winter conditions in Kentucky.
The teams will play the series rubber match on Sunday at 11 a.m. ET.
In gme two, a pitcher's duel in a seven-inning game came down to the final frame. Junior Andy Cisneros drew an inning-opening walk. Redshirt freshman Austyn Peak then saw his first career plate appearance in a pinch-hit role. He laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to set the stage for Dutton. He crushed a Gabe Watts' offering into the left-field corner to easily allow Cisneros to motor home with the lone and winning run.
Pitching-wise, left-handed starter Kamden Hawks tossed the first five innings and left without allowing a single hit to the Bonnies from upstate New York. He also struck out five. Will Grimmett entered to start the sixth and continued the shutout. He picked up the win to move to 2-0.
The offense was held to just five hits by Watts and starter Michael Salina, who continuously tossed bullets in the upper 90s. Hayden Robbins, Griffin Olson, Davis Germann, Cisneros and Dutton had the hits.
In game one, St. Bonaventure scored all six of its runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings after not collecting a hit until the sixth inning. They took a 3-2 lead for good in the seventh off an RBI fielder's choice. The Bonnies added a two-run homer and RBI double in a three-run seventh frame.
Morehead State moved to a 2-0 lead in third inning when catcher Hunter Thomas belted his second long ball of the year, a two-run job, to left field.
Thomas also added an RBI double in the seventh frame, accounting for all three of the Eagles' runs in the game.
Hunter Porter got the start and, just like Hawks' effort, didn't allow a hit in his time on the mound. He left after four frames tossed and five strikeouts recorded, but he did walk five Bonnie batters. Relievers Josh Furtado (2 runs allowed), Trevor Callahan (3 runs allowed) and Jonah Sibley (1 run allowed) were tagged with the opponent tallies. Callahan (0-2) was saddled with the loss. The staff did combine for eight strikeouts.
NICHOLLS 4-8, LITTLE ROCK 1-6
THIBODAUX, La. - Little Rock dropped a doubleheader at Nicholls on Saturday. The Colonels (5-2) won 4-1 and 8-6 at Didier Field. The Trojans (3-3) will try to halt a three-game losing streak at Louisiana-Monroe on Monday.
In game one, the Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second and gave up a pair of runs in the sixth and eighth innings, respectively. Nicholls pitcher Alex Sparks pitched all nine innings picking up the win. He gave up four hits, walked one and struck out six while throwing 105 pitches.

Little Rock scored three more runs in the top of the eighth to make it 8-6 but couldn't add any runs in the ninth. Aiden McGinnis was 3-for-4 for Little Rock. Cooper Chaplain was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jackson Rains smacked a pinch-hit double for an RBI. Jack Cline took the loss on the mound going 4.2 innings giving up one hit, a walk and striking out three.
TENNESSEE TECH 3, SOUTHERN ILLINOIS 2
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Clutch pitching and timely offense was the name of the game for the Tennessee Tech baseball team Saturday afternoon, as the Golden Eagles opened their weekend series with Southern Illinois with a 3-2 victory at Quillen Field and Bush Stadium at the Averitt Express Baseball Complex.
Tech (6-0) moved to a perfect 6-0 on the season with the triumph over the Salukis (1-3), marking the team's best start since the 2022 campaign's 10-0 mark to open the year.
The Golden Eagles wasted little time in providing starting pitcher Jaxson Pease with room to work, scoring in the bottom of the first inning. The purple and gold loaded the bases with three consecutive hits to open the frame, taking a 1-0 lead behind a sacrifice fly ball off the bat of third baseman Preston Steele.
SIU limited the damage in the frame, but two innings later, the purple and gold struck again. In the bottom of the third, center fielder Nicho Jordan led things off with a double to left field, advancing to third base on a fielder's choice that put runners on the corners.
Taking his turn in the box, first baseman Carter Vrabel delivered the big swing of the day on a full count, ripping a two-run double down the left-field line to make it a 3-0 ball game in favor of Tech.
With three runs under his belt, Pease was methodical in his work over the opening five frames, working around four hits and three walks to hold the Salukis off the scoreboard. Southern Illinois finally broke through in the sixth, using a lead-off single and a double to plate its first run of the ball game.
A fly ball advanced the runner to third and a ground out cut the Tech lead to just one run, but Pease calmly closed out the frame to all but secure his second win of the season. The junior hurler struck out three in the contest, covering six innings overall.
Taking over on the hill in the seventh, right-hander Reece McDuffie was nearly flawless out of the bullpen, securing his second save of the season with three scoreless frames to his name. The right-hander's lone blemish was quickly erased, as a one-out single in the seventh simply gave the Golden Eagles a chance to flash their double-play ability, with shortstop Owen Lee and Vrabel combining for the inning-ending defensive highlight.
McDuffie forced four more ground outs and a pair of flyouts to finish off the final two frames and secure another victory for the Cookeville crew. Lee and Jordan led the Golden Eagles with two hits apiece while Vrabel paced the purple and gold with two RBI.
GEORGIA STATE 9, UT MARTIN 7
ATLANTA - The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team carried a one-run lead into the bottom of the ninth inning at GSU Baseball Complex, however Georgia State managed to conjure up a walk-off home run to defeat the Skyhawks, 9-7.
Three UT Martin players had multi-hit performances including TJ Grines (two hits, one double, one RBI, one stolen base), Jonah Katsaboulas (three hits, two runs scored, one walk) and Garner Anderson (3-for-3 day, two RBI, one stolen base, one run scored). Additionally, Cameron Greene (two RBI), Jalen Fithian (two walks, one run scored) and Tommy Koch (one RBI, one walk) energized the Skyhawk offense.
Drake Bayles went 4.2 innings with three strikeouts while Jeb Bartle (0-1) pitched 3.2 innings and struck out four.
For the second straight outing the Skyhawks got on the scoreboard first, this time from an RBI single by Anderson to score Katsaboulas in the second. Bayles provided two scoreless innings (including a perfect second frame) with no hits allowed to begin the game.
The Panthers (5-0) brought home three runs in the third but Bayles quickly recovered, retiring two straight batters. Another run in the fourth brought the Georgia State lead to 4-1 going toward the fifth frame.
UT Martin erupted in the top part of the inning, all starting from a two-RBI single by Greene that brought the deficit down to one. Koch would keep the line moving after an RBI base hit to tie the game and Anderson proceeded to drop down a sacrifice bunt that scored Greene and gave the Skyhawks the edge at 5-4.
Bayles finished his outing with the first two outs of the home half and Bartle entered from the bullpen to retire the final batter from a flyout to center field. Bartle made it a 1-2-3 sixth and worked around two baserunners in the seventh to keep it a one-run lead for the Orange and Blue.
UT Martin (2-3) added insurance in the eighth after a Grines punched a single through the left side to score Anderson. Fithian then would reach home following a failed pickoff attempt to bring the Skyhawk lead to 7-4.
However, Georgia State would not go down easy. The Panthers hit a two-run home run in the eighth to get the lead back down to one and scored the winning run in the ninth off another two-run round tripper.

The triple marked the first for Forsyth in his second start behind the dish. Forsyth finished the game 1-2 at the plate with the triple, an RBI, and a walk.
