SOUTHERN ILLINOIS 7, SOUTHERN INDIANA 0
CARBONDALE, Ill. - University of Southern Indiana Baseball finished its weekend and the first half of the road swing with a 7-0 loss to Southern Illinois University Sunday afternoon at Itchy Jones Stadium in Carbondale, Illinois. USI ends the day 6-5 overall in 2025, while SIU goes to 7-3.
USI and senior starting right-hander Hiroyuki Yamada held SIU scoreless for the first three frames before the Salukis scored in the fourth to lead 1-0. The Salukis would continue to build their lead with a four-run sixth to lead 5-0.
SIU would add two more runs in the seventh to seal the 7-0 decision. USI was held to four hits and stranded five men on base.
Yamada (0-1) picked up the loss for his efforts on the bump. He allowed four runs, three earned on five hits and four walks, while striking out four in five-plus innings of work and 23 batters faced.
MOREHEAD STATE 14, QUINNIPIAC 13
MOREHEAD, Ky. - Morehead State scored runs in bunches and got a two-homer day from right fielder JJ Dutton and held on to defeat Quinnipiac 14-13 in the series finale Sunday at Allen Field, clinching the series two games to one.
Morehead State (6-4) gave up two runs in the first inning and another in the second. In the bottom of the second, the Eagles scored five runs on just one hit, as Quinnipiac starter Matt Alduino (1-1) walked three MSU batters and hit four others. In all, the Eagles sent 11 batters to the plate in the frame.
Quinnipiac (4-6) struck back in the third, scoring three runs on three hits and one MSU error to go back ahead 6-5.
The Eagles got another big inning in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs on four hits, highlighted by a two-run, 409-foot blast over the fence in left center by JJ Dutton for his first home run of the season.
MSU starter Bradley Poynter (2-0) pitched five and a third innings in picking up the win. He allowed nine runs (six earned), scattering 14 hits and striking out five.
MSU's Will Grimmett threw the final three and one-third innings scattering six hits, allowing four runs (three earned), striking out three to earn his third save of the season.
Quinnipiac got three runs in the top of the sixth on three hits and a lead-off error by Morehead State to pull to within one run, 10-9.
In the bottom of the inning, Morehead State shortstop Andy Cisneros led off with single up the middle, and Chance Edmonds lined a single into right. Dutton then sent a pitch over the screen in center field to put MSU ahead 14-9. Dutton finished the day two for five with six runs batted in.
Quinnipiac got lone runs in the seventh and eighth innings to pull to within three. In the top of the ninth, Bobcat third baseman led off with a single to left, and designated hitter Christian Smith hit a home run over the screen in right center to make it a one-run game. Grimmett was able to coax a fly ball out and sandwiched a single to left with two strikeouts to end the game.
ST. BONAVENTURE 13, UT MARTIN 6
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The University of the Tennessee at Martin baseball team fell to St. Bonaventure 13-6 as it finished out the MTSU round-robin weekend at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
Garner Anderson (double, RBI, run scored, two stolen bases), Jonah Katsaboulas (run scored), Arderrius Townsend (RBI, run scored, hit by pitch twice) and Blaze Bell (RBI) had multi-hit games. Additionally, Brody Capps (solo home run, two runs scored), Cameron Greene (two walks), Jalen Fithian (stolen base, run scored, walk), Frank Micallef (walk) and JT Popick (walk) contributed to the Skyhawk offense.
Jacob Sitton started the game on the mound and was followed by four innings from Quincy Thornton (0-1, four strikeouts), Zach Wager, Austin Gast (1.1 perfect innings with one strikeout), Quin Long (one inning pitched, one punchout), Shawn Perez (one inning pitched) and Brock Arender (no hits, one strikeout).
UT Martin (4-6) found themselves down 1-0 after the first inning but quickly tied the score with Capps’ fourth long ball of the year. The Bonnies (7-3) broke the tie in the following frame but failed to score in the third after Thornton left two stranded by whiffing the final batter. This gave the Skyhawks the opportunity to take their first lead of the game as Anderson drove home Fithian on a double and then later scored on a stolen base and throwing error.
St. Bonaventure brought the score even in the fourth but Bell’s base knock during the home half scored Townsend and pulled UT Martin in front by a 4-3 margin. The Bonnies used a five-run fifth to garner a lead that they carried to the end of the ball game.
Gast recorded the final out of the fifth and put together a clean sixth for the Skyhawks. St. Bonaventure added four runs over the next two innings before UT Martin got one back in the bottom of the eighth when Katsaboulas raced home on a wild pitch.
Both teams scored in the ninth with the Skyhawks run coming off an RBI single from Townsend as he plated Capps. However, the deficit was too large to overcome for UT Martin.
NORTHERN ILLINOIS 13-5, SIUE 4-3
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE baseball dropped a pair of seven-inning games to Northern Illinois Sunday, falling 13-4 in game one and 5-3 in game two.
The Cougars have dropped eight straight and fell to 2-9. Northern Illinois swept the four-game series and improved to 6-4.
The Huskies scored five times in the first in game one and never looked back. SIUE scored single runs in the first and second innings, but Northern Illinois scored twice in the second, twice in the fourth and then four times in the fifth to go up 13-2.
Josh Heyder hit his first home runs in a Cougar uniform in the sixth, a two-run shot, for the 13-4 final. Heyder was 1-3 with the two RBIs.
Garrett Helsel (0-1) allowed all five runs in the first inning in his first start this season.
NIU starter Max Vaisvila (2-1) went the distance and struck out eight hitters.
The Cougars got out to a quick start in the late game. Kyle Ratliff hit his first home run of the season in the second inning. Chase Bloomer picked up an RBI-triple and Michael Siemer added a run-scoring groundout in the third inning to give SIUE a 3-0 lead.
The Huskies came back with a four-run fourth inning against SIUE reliever Kyle Athmer (0-1). They added a run in the seventh thanks to a solo home run by Andrew Smart.
The home run was the lone blemish on an otherwise brilliant outing by SIUE right-hander Liam McKillop. He threw three innings, striking out seven of the 10 hitters he faced.
Ratliff finished 2-3 with the home run. Daniel Gierer had two hits in the second game for the Cougars. Bloomer was 1-3.
TENNESSEE TECH 8, UIC 3
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - When a recipe works, why change it, right? That philosophy served the Tennessee Tech baseball team well Sunday afternoon as the Golden Eagles used a combination of timely hitting and strong pitching in big spots to earn an 8-3 victory over UIC at Quillen Field and Bush Stadium at the Averitt Express Baseball Complex.
Much like Saturday's contest, Tech (9-3) found the hits it needed when it counted most and saw some stellar play on the mound to complete the series sweep over the visiting Flames (2-10). The purple and gold produced eight hits, drew four walks, and got plunked twice, constantly applying pressure on UIC.
It started right out of the gate, with the Cookeville crew lighting up the scoreboard first. Second baseman Jackson Rooker led off the contest with a base knock up the middle, followed by a five-pitch walk to shortstop Owen Lee.
Kicking off his best day at the dish as a Golden Eagle yet, designated hitter Jorsixt Jimenez blitzed an RBI base hit through the left side, plating Rooker for the first run of the ball game. Rookie hurler Carter Casabella tossed three scoreless frames to open the day, showing impressive chops to escape a jam in the second inning.
With runners on the corners and nobody out, the freshman dialed up a three-pitch strikeout to pick up some momentum. On the very next delivery, Casabella induced a ground ball to Lee for a 6-3 double play to end the frame.
The Flames tied the contest in the fourth, using a double, a sacrifice bunt, and a base hit to plate their first run of the day. Casabella picked up his second out of the frame the hard way, directing a comebacker off his leg and directly to first baseman Aaron Moffitt for the putout.
Trying to finish the inning, the rookie toughed out one more at-bat, but UIC responded with an RBI single to center field. Tech head coach Matt Bragga turned things over to Rockford University transfer Jared Herzog, who promptly induced a ground out to end the threat.
It didn't take long for the Golden Eagles to pick up their starter, loading the bases to open the bottom half of the inning and prompting a pitching change. UIC picked up a quick strikeout and went back to the bullpen again.
Rooker greeted the newest Flame to the field with a sacrifice fly to deep foul territory in left field, squaring the contest at 2-2. Lee followed with an RBI single up the middle that redirected into shallow center field off a diving effort by the second baseman.
Catcher Mack Whitcomb drew a six-pitch walk to reload the bases, setting up Jimenez for more heroics. Up 3-2 now, the junior turned in the hit of the day to break the contest wide open, slashing a bases-clearing double down the right-field line for three more RBI.
Herzog looked great through two more innings of work, piling up three strikeouts with just one mistake. In the top of the sixth, a breaking ball left up was deposited over the left-field wall for a solo home run. He responded with back-to-back ground outs to second base, finishing off the sixth.
Once again, the purple and gold had their pitcher's back, picking up two more insurance runs in the bottom half. After right fielder Luke Bragga led off the frame with a base hit to left field, Lee was plunked with a pitch to put a pair on.
UIC picked up two outs in the inning before Jimenez returned to the plate for one last offensive delivery. The Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic native smashed another double to right field, driving in both Bragga and Lee for an incredible, six-RBI day at the dish.
Freshman reliever Jaxon Pridgen came out of the pen to open the seventh and went on to finish the contest while facing the minimum. The rookie earned his first career save with 3.0 innings of perfect pitching, striking out three Flames without allowing a baserunner. Herzog earned his first win as a Golden Eagle, completing 2.1 innings with three punch-outs of his own.
Jimenez led the purple and gold with a 3-for-5 day and his six ribbies. Left fielder Landon Smelser inked up two more hits while Lee scored twice on the day.
LINDENWOOD 4, ILLINOIS STATE 2
ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The Lindenwood baseball team (6-6) picked up a series win over Illinois State (2-7) after defeating the Redbirds 4-2 on Sunday afternoon from Lou Brock Sports Complex
Ethan Smith pitched out of a jam in the first, leaving two Illinois State runners stranded. The game was scoreless until the third when Lindenwood pushed a run across on a Redbird error. The Lions got the first two runners on in the fourth and Sam Grunberg added to Lindenwood's lead with an RBI single, bringing home Jake Radosevich. A sac fly by Evan Funkhouser later in the inning made the score 3-0 after four innings.
Illinois State began the fifth with back-to-back walks and plated two, but Bennett Stice came in and got out of a jam to keep Lindenwood in front 3-2. Stice went on to throw 3.1 scoreless innings and the Lions held that one-run lead into the eighth. The Lions put the first three runners on in the eighth including a pair of hits from Tyler Thompsom and Filip Sarota. Thompson eventually scored on a sac fly from Grunberg giving Lindenwood some cushion at 4-2 heading to the ninth.
Stice finished off the game with a scoreless ninth and earned the win out of the pen on Sunday. Lindenwood picked up its second-consecutive series win with a 4-2 victory.
MURRAY STATE 6, LITTLE ROCK 4
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Little Rock jumped ahead early in Sunday's series finale against Murray State, but was unable to hold on to its lead and allowed three ninth-inning runs in a 6-4 loss to the Racers, who swept the series at Gary Hogan Field. The Trojans (5-6) opened up a 4-1 lead after five innings but were held without a hit over the last four, allowing Murray State (7-0) to chip away at its deficit before eventually taking the lead for good in the final stanza.
Little Rock opened the scoring in the second as Angel Cano walked and later scored on Cade Martin's sacrifice fly, the first collegiate RBI for the true freshman from Texarkana, Texas, making his first NCAA start. The Trojans added a run in the third, getting a triple off the wall from Zach Henry – his second three-bagger of the year – and the senior scoring on Cano's single into left for a 2-0 lead.
Murray State was hitless until the fourth inning, when they finally pushed a run across, but the Trojans responded with a pair of runs in the fifth to go ahead 4-1. Cooper Chaplain walked, Ryan Geck singled and Cano scored them both on a double to deep left for his second run-scoring hit of the day. Unfortunately for Little Rock, Cano's fifth-inning hit was the Trojans' last of the afternoon.
The Racers scored one run in the sixth, cut the lead to 4-3 with another run in the seventh, and then tied the game on a lead-off homer in the ninth. A two-run triple later in the inning proved to be the difference for the final of 6-4. Cano finished 2-for-3 with a double, walk and three RBIs to lead the Trojans at the plate.
Jack Cline started and went 5.2 innings for Little Rock, allowing just five hits, two runs and two walks while striking out four. Preston Davis was tagged with the loss after giving up the game-tying homer in the ninth and being responsible for the winning run. Dylan Zentko earned the win for Murray State with a five-inning relief outing that included seven strikeouts.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 5, PURDUE FORT WAYNE 0
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - LHP Haden Dow tossed his first career complete game as Southeast Missouri Baseball (6-5) shutout Purdue Fort Wayne (1-10) in the final game of the weekend by a final score of 5-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Dow (2-1) pitched the full 9.0 innings without surrendering a walk for the seventh time in his career and the second time this season. He punched out nine Mastodons and surrendered just three hits in his third start of the season en route to his second victory of 2025.
Leading off the bottom of the second inning, right fielder Cole Warehime roped his first-of-two doubles on the day to center field to get the first Redhawk in scoring position. Bryce Cannon singled on a perfectly placed bunt during the next at-bat to put Redhawks on the corners with no outs.
A double play turned by the PFW defense allowed Warehime to come across to score for the first run of the game to give SEMO a 1-0 lead after two innings.
The Redhawks would plate two more runs in the fourth inning thanks to defensive miscues from the Mastodons beginning with Warehime's second double of the ball game. Bryce Cannon once again came to the plate and roped a single to the right of the PFW first baseman. The return throw to the bag sailed wide and allowed Warehime to score all the way from second.
With Cannon advancing to second on a groundout by Mikey Rocha, DH Demitri Shakotko and catcher Liam Forsyth each recorded a walk to load the bases. A passed ball allowed Cannon to score easily from third base to make it 3-0 Redhawks after the fourth.
Two more insurance runs would come across for the Redhawks in the eighth inning. Three straight walks to start the bottom of the eighth would load the bases for second baseman Brooks Kettering.
Kettering would record the fourth-straight walk surrendered by PFW's pitching staff and would make it 4-0 Redhawks. Center fielder Michael Mugan recorded the fifth-straight walk and the Redhawks scored their final run of the ballgame.
Kettering and Mugan were the only Redhawks to record RBIs in the contest as the SEMO offense registered eight hits including two from Warehime and Cannon.
AUSTIN PEAY 9, EASTERN ILLINOIS 2
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - The Eastern Illinois baseball team (3-6, 0-0 OVC) dropped their series finale at Austin Peay (8-4, 0-0 ASUN) by a score of 9-2 on Sunday afternoon as the Panthers were unable to overcome an early offensive barrage from the Governors.
EIU scored a pair of earned runs on six hits and no errors. Five Eastern batters posted hits in the game, led by Sam Wiese with a pair of knocks to extend his hit streak to five games.
Tyler Kapraun (0-1) suffered the loss after surrendering six runs on seven hits with a strikeout through two innings of work.
The Governors plated runs in each of the first four innings, including a four spot in the second that put Eastern in an early 6-0 hole.
A Kyler Proctor RBI single in the third followed by a Cameron Nickens lead-off homer and Austen Jaslove RBI triple in the fourth extended Peay's lead to nine.
The Governors were held scoreless in their final four at-bats, with transfer Nate Marshall pitching two perfect innings with a pair of strikeouts in his EIU debut.
The Panthers got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning with an Eli Hill single that drove in Joey Hagan before a Chris Worcester sacrifice fly in the sixth drove in Peyton Wilson to give Eastern their second run of the ballgame.
EIU went hitless in the seventh and eighth innings before a Sam Wiese lead-off single gave the Panthers a baserunner in the ninth. Wiese moved into scoring position after James Love was a hit by a pitch, but Eastern was unable capitalize with the next two batters going down on strikes before a 6-4 fielder's choice ended the game.
ALABAMA STATE 9, WESTERN ILLINOIS 7
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Western Illinois put up a fight but fell short against Alabama State in a 9-7 loss on Sunday afternoon.
WIU (2-6) got off to a slow start, but a four-run fifth inning helped them take the lead midway through the game. Tyler Large had an RBI single to start the big inning for the Leathernecks, followed by a Paul Osting bunt single to give WIU a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth. The Leathernecks would add two more in the top of the fifth with an RBI single from Justin Bogard followed by a SAC bunt from Trevor Leon extending the lead for WIU at 6-2.
Large would have a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while Kyree Alexander also came through in clutch moments, driving in three runs with a pair of hits.
On the mound, Frederick Romano started strong for the Leathernecks, striking out six over six innings while allowing three runs. He kept Alabama State (5-7) in check early, but things unraveled late when the Hornets' offense came alive. The Hornets chipped away with runs in the sixth and seventh before erupting for four in the eighth inning to get the win.
Despite the loss, WIU's offense showed signs of life with 10 hits and solid performances from Large and Alexander.
