WOFFORD 16, TENNESSEE STATE 2 (5)

SPARTANBURG, S.C.
- The Tennessee State softball team split games at the Wofford Invitational, defeating North Dakota in extra innings and then falling to host Wofford in the second game of the day.

The Tigers needed eight innings to finish the job, but earned the 6-5 extra-innings victory over the North Dakota Fighting Hawks Friday.

Reina Castillo (4-3) started in the circle and picked up the win for Tennessee State (5-5). The right-hander went eight innings, giving up five runs, all of them earned, on nine hits, allowing two walks and striking out six.

Anayah Baker-Rowell furnished a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a triple, a walk and two RBI. Jasmine Blackburn also chipped in for Tennessee State, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate.

The Tigers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Spencer put Tennessee State on the board with a two-out solo home run off senior Jackie Albrecht.

SAINT FRANCIS 6, EASTERN ILLINOIS 5
FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL 6, EASTERN ILLINOIS 0

MIAMI, Fla.
- Eastern Illinois dropped its first two games on Friday at the FIU Softball Classic in Miami, Fla.  In the opener Saint Francis (Pa.) rallied to beat EIU 6-5 before the Panthers lost to host FIU 6-0 in the second game of the day.

Eastern Illinois built a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Panthers were unable to hold off a late Saint Francis rally falling 6-5 in the opener.

EIU scored twice in the opening inning with Alisha Frederick coming around to score an unearned run and Karson Davey scoring on an RBI single by Abbey Crain.  SFU answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the first.

EIU tacked on two more in the fourth as Crain and Abbi Hatton reached on back-to-back singles to open the inning.  Sophie Cerveny drove in one run with a ground out while Kira Manganello delivered the other with a sacrifice fly.

Crain drove in the Panthers final run in the fifth scoring Frederick for her second run of the game.  Crain was the lone Panther with multiple hits going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

SFU rallied to tie the game in the fifth chasing EIU starter Karlie Mckenzie after the first four batters in the inning reached base.  SFU would score two of the four runs in the inning unearned following an EIU error.  Aliya Garroway and Olivia Ulam drove in runs in the inning for the Red Flash.  They were two of three SFU players to finish with two hits.

In the sixth Hannah Bendle drew a walk to start the inning and scored on an RBI single by Garroway up the middle.

Bryanna French (1-3) took the loss for EIU.  Addison Deal (2-0) picked up the win in relief for SFU as they improved to 7-7 on the year.

In the second game of the day Florida International scored four of its six runs unearned beating Eastern Illinois, 6-0.   FIU improved to 10-7 on the year while EIU dropped to 6-11.

FIU scored an unearned run in the first against EIU starter McKenzie Oslanzi (3-6).

In the second Paige Miller drove in the first of two FIU runs in the inning.  She finished the day 2-for-2 with two RBI, one of two FIU players with two hits.    Isabella Perez who was the other FIU player with two hits scored on Miller's single to the left side.

FIU's final runs came in the sixth scoring two more unearned runs.  Miller drove in one of the three in the inning.

Eastern Illinois generated five hits against FIU starter Kennedy Byrd (4-5).

The Panthers best offensive threat was in the fifth inning when Jenna Teakert and Morgan Hance had back-to-back one out singles.  Kendall Grover loaded the bases with a third straight single.   FIU coaxed two infield ground balls to end the threat.

Briana Gonzalez and Abbey Crain added the other EIU hits.

FURMAN 11, SIUE 3 (5)
UAB 7, SIUE 5

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.
- SIUE softball dropped a pair of contests Friday on the opening day of the Crimson Classic.

The Cougars's record fell to 5-8 after an 11-3 loss to Furman and a 7-5 loss to UAB.

Lauren Yslava gave SIUE an early lead in the Furman game. She sent the fourth pitch of the game over the left field fence. It was her fourth home run of the season.

Furman put together five runs in the second and three more in the third, stretching the lead out to 11-1 before SIUE added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth on a second home run from Yslava.

McKayla Anderson, 1-3, took the loss for the Cougars.

In the UAB game, Anna Henderson took over with three RBIs, including a first-inning two-run homer and an RBI double in the seventh.

Arissah Gara provided a two-run double against the Blazers in the fourth, but UAB collected 12 hits to improve its season record to 9-7.

Avery Arwood went the distance in the circle for the Cougars.

MARIST 11, SOUTHERN INDIANA 0
SOUTHERN INDIANA 2, WINTHROP 1

ROCK HILL, S.C.
- Following an 11-0 setback against Marist University early Friday, University of Southern Indiana Softball rebounded with a 2-1 victory against Winthrop University on the first day of the Winthrop Coach Cooke Memorial Tournament.

The Screaming Eagles (2-9) began the day against Marist (11-4). The first inning was once again unkind to USI, as the Red Foxes struck for two runs in the top of the first. Marist scored a crooked number in three of the first four innings to lead 7-0 after four.

Marist was not done there. The Red Foxes added four more runs in the seventh, winning 11-0 on the heels hitting six home runs in the contest and collecting 14 total hits. Redshirt junior Haley Ahr had three of the six home runs for Marist.

USI was limited to three hits offensively. Freshman pitcher Kylie Witthaus (0-4) started the first 2.1 innings, giving up five runs – four earned. Senior hurler Whitley Hunter finished the game, tossing 4.2 innings and allowing six runs.

Marist graduate pitcher Kiley Myers (7-0) recorded the win with six innings of work and three strikeouts.

Contrasting from the first game, USI's second game against Winthrop (10-6) was a low-scoring, pitcher's duel. Each side notched its first respective hits in the third inning. Both starting pitchers, senior pitcher Josie Newman for USI and sophomore pitcher Lonna Addison for Winthrop, retired the side in order in three of the first four frames.

In the top of the fifth inning, Southern Indiana broke through on the scoreboard first when sophomore outfielder Kate Satkoski turned a pitch over the left field fence for her first home run of the season to put USI ahead 1-0.

The Screaming Eagles tacked on another run in the sixth inning. Following a single and successful sacrifice to get a runner in scoring position, junior outfielder Olivia Money doubled to score the run and extend USI's lead to 2-0.

Southern Indiana sought insurance in the top of the seventh but stranded runners on the corners to keep the score 2-0. Not getting at least one more insurance run almost proved costly, as Winthrop did not go down without a fight in the home half of the seventh.

Winthrop got one run back in the inning on an RBI double that put the potential tying run at third and a possible game-winning run at second. Then a two-out walk loaded the bases. Newman sealed the deal with her 15th strikeout of the game to terminate the threat and give USI the victory.

Newman (2-4) got the win after her fourth complete game this season. The right-hander allowed one unearned run off three hits and struck out 15 batters – two off her career high.

In addition to Satkoski's and Money's offensive contributions, freshman catcher Jordan Mackey had two doubles in the game.

Addison (4-2) was charged with the loss for Winthrop after 6.1 innings of work and two runs surrendered.

#22 FLORIDA ATLANTIC 10, MOREHEAD STATE 3
AUSTIN PEAY 7, MOREHEAD STATE 1

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Morehead State battled No. 25/RV/22 Florida Atlantic down to the wire on Friday in its opening game of the Governors Classic at Austin Peay. The Eagles eventually succumbed to the Owls' bats and fell 10-3, despite the efforts of freshman Kendra Lewis, whose three-run homer gave the Blue and Gold a lead that held up through four and a half innings. Lewis finished the afternoon 1-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and a run scored.

Junior Emma Solis (1-5) got the ball to start for Morehead State (1-14) and took the loss. She pitched 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs, with two strikeouts and five walks. Juniors Rylie Burney and Taikibrea Campbell came in to finish the game.

Offensively, the Eagles were led by Lewis and freshman Sophie Collins who compiled a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-3. Freshman Maddy Christopher also helped out for Morehead State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double.

Neither team committed an error, the fourth mistake-free game for MSU this season.

The Eagles got the scoring started early, putting three runs on the board in the top of the first inning on Lewis' first home run of the season, a shot over the fence in right field that plated senior outfielder Darlene Monttoya and Christopher. The Owls closed within a run by scoring twice off a homer in the bottom of the first and eventually took the lead with a three-run fifth. FAU added five more runs in the sixth to secure the victory. Florida Atlantic finished with a 10-4 edge in hits.

Six days ago, Morehead State fell to Austin Peay in South Carolina, 10-1 in five innings.

On Friday, the Eagles had improvements in virtually every category, before falling to the host of the Governors Classic.

MSU had more hits, fewer errors, surrendered fewer runs and gave away fewer free passes than it did last weekend. Those are all key positives for a team that is struggling to find success.

Freshman Rylie Burney (0-7) got the ball to start for Morehead State (1-15) and took the loss. She went the distance allowing seven hits, seven runs and just one walk.

At the plate, the Eagles were led by freshman Nyla Doiron, who went 2-for-2 on the day. Freshman Sophie Collins continues to generate offense and put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-3.

The Eagles got on the scoreboard first, starting in the third inning. Freshman Donato came across to score the lone run of the inning for Morehead State and get them on the board. The Eagles were unable to hold the lead, as Austin Peay scored seven times over the remaining four innings to grab the 7-1 win.

Theresa Snaidauf would pinch run for McMinn and would score on a wild pitch to put the Lions up 1-0.

Green Bay would come back and tie the game during the top of the fifth after a groundout to third brought home a run.The phoenix then took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth after an RBI sac fly to center field brought home a run. Hatton tied the game in the sixth with a no-doubt home run to left field.

After Anna Sanders singled to start the inning and was moved over by Nicole Henson with a sac bunt, West delivered a deep shot to right center field which was just out of reach for the diving right-fielder as the Lions would go on to win 3-2 in walk-off fashion.
