After its first three offensive opportunities, Morehead State (12-25, 2-13 OVC) assumed a 5-0 advantage heading into the bottom part of the third. It was then that the Skyhawk offense erupted for six-run third inning. Anderson would put a ball through the left side to score Greene then Capps brought in another off a single. Townsend made it a 5-3 game after the fourth straight single to left field. Popick became the sixth straight UT Martin hitter with a single when the junior sent a ball up the middle of the infield that tied the game at five. With just one out in the inning, Micallef pulled the Skyhawks in front when he put a ball to right field that became the seventh single of the inning.
King retired the first two batters of the fourth before Shropshire finished the frame on a flyout to left field. In the home half, Capps extended his team’s lead to two on a single, and with the bases loaded Hudson notched his fourth triple of the year to bring the score to 10-5. Two runs came home for the Eagles in the top of the fifth, but those were quickly answered by the Skyhawks on a sacrifice fly by Capps and a double steal that Anderson scored on.
After Morehead State cut its deficit down to three going to the bottom of the seventh, Townsend rocketed a two-out double down the right field line to plate Anderson for a 13-9 lead. Baskin worked a scoreless frame in the eighth by getting a double play on a lineout and groundout to second.
Bartle slammed the door in the ninth from a flyout, backwards K and pop out to Popick.
WESTERN ILLINOIS 8, LITTLE ROCK 6
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The Western Illinois Baseball team picked up their eleventh win of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Little Rock (18-20, 7-7) by a score of 8-6. The Leathernecks would get big contributions from Brock Lummus and Frederick Romano to secure the win and snap the Trojans' eight-game winning streak.
WIU would jump out to an early lead in the top of the first by a score of 3-0 behind an RBI single up the middle from Tyler Large, a bases loaded walk from Kenneth Perez, and Large coming around to score from third on a double play with nobody out.
After Little Rock would score one run in the bottom of the first and two runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game at three, Frederick Romano would slam the door shut on the Trojan offense. The redshirt Senior from Paterson, New Jersey gave up just two hits and struck out four over his final four innings pitched to pick up his third win of the season. His performance on the mound this afternoon also allowed him to pick up his third quality start of the season. The 6'2" right handed pitcher threw six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out five.
In the top of the fourth, Kyree Alexander led off the inning with a double to right field. Brock Lummus would follow the lead-off double with his fourth home run of the season on a no-doubt go-ahead two-run homer to left field to put the Leathernecks in front by a score of 5-3. WIU would score five unanswered runs and would add on to their lead in both the sixth and eighth innings. In the top of the sixth, Wandel Campana would lead off the inning with a walk and would come around to score on an RBI double to right field from Paul Osting. Osting would come around to score later in the inning after advancing to third on an error by the right fielder and touching home plate on a wild pitch by the Little Rock pitcher to make it a 7-3 game. Cordell Coburn would then add an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning on an RBI single up the middle to score Matt Olive making it 8-3 in favor of the Leathernecks.
Little Rock would start the comeback like they have done all series long, scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut into the WIU lead, making it 8-6. In the bottom of the ninth, the Leathernecks would get two quick outs with the second out being challenged by head coach Terry Davis. The orginal call on the field was safe on a ground ball that was hit to Wandel Campana, but the call was overturned after video review. The next two Trojans would reach base to put runners on first and second, as Little Rock was threatening to tie the game with their hottest hitter up to the plate. Coach Davis would go to the bullpen with two outs in the ninth to bring in Eric Rawlings. Rawlings would only need four pitches to get Cooper Chaplain to fly out to center field to pick up his first save of the season.
Offensively, the Leathernecks piled up 12 hits with Brock Lummus and Cordell Coburn leading the way. Coburn was 2-3 with two singles and an RBI, while Lummus was 2-5 with two RBI and a home run that turned out to be the game winner.
