EVANSVILLE, Ind. - After multiple days of waiting for the weekend rain to subside, University of Southern Indiana Softball got back on the field Monday with an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader split against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. SIUE (20-15, 10-4 OVC) took the first game, 8-0 in five innings, before USI (10-18, 7-6 OVC) answered in the second game, 8-0 in six innings.
In game one, SIUE kicked off the day's scoring with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. The Cougars went on to tack on another run in the third inning to triple their lead to 3-0. SIUE added five more runs off a few defensive miscues by USI and a pair of RBI singles in the top of the fourth inning.
Meanwhile, in the fourth inning, senior pitcher Josie Newman recorded her fifth strikeout of the game to collect career strikeout number 700. Newman is second in USI's all-time strikeouts list behind Jennifer Leonhardt, who has 787 strikeouts.
The Cougars closed out game one after the fifth frame, holding USI to two hits in the game. Sophomore infielder Sydney Long had both of USI's hits, registering a double in each of her first two at-bats in the contest.
Newman (6-11) pitched the first four frames, allowing eight runs – two earned – with five strikeouts. Junior pitcher Maddison Depencier pitched a scoreless fifth inning in relief.
SIUE totaled six hits in game one at the plate. Freshman pitcher Avery Arwood (7-6) pitched all five innings and struck out eight.
In game two, Southern Indiana flipped the tides and scored right away in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double from freshman Jordan Mackey to take a 1-0 advantage.
USI's lead increased to 4-0 in the home half of the second inning when sophomore outfielder Kate Satkoski hit a two-RBI triple and junior outfielder Caroline Stapleton singled in another run.
While the third and fourth innings went scoreless and USI freshman pitcher Kylie Witthaus was dealing once again, the Screaming Eagles opened the game up to 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Satkoski collected her second triple of the game and cleared the bases.
USI had the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth. The Eagles walked off the game on an RBI hit-by-pitch by sophomore catcher Alyssa Mumaw, who also had a single and two runs scored in the contest.
Southern Indiana notched 11 hits in game two, as Satkoski led the way by going 3-3 with five RBIs in the batter's box. Satkoski became the seventh player in USI history to hit two triples in the same game, matching a USI single-game record. The three in the batting order each had two-hit games, including the second two-hit game of the day for Long.
For Witthaus (4-6), the left-hander hurled her second consecutive shutout, fourth consecutive complete game, and fifth quality start in Ohio Valley Conference action. Witthaus surrendered only two hits and struck out four in the six innings of work on Monday.
SIUE's freshman pitcher McKayla Anderson (4-5) was charged with the loss after giving up four runs – three earned – in an inning and a third. The Cougars used four pitchers in the second game of the doubleheader.
Following Monday's double-dip against SIUE, Southern Indiana stands in fifth place in the OVC and SIUE exits the day tied for second.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 2, LINDENWOOD 1
ST. CHARLES, Mo. - Sydney Dennis and Sydney Melton combined for five hits and each had one RBI to lead Southeast Missouri (16-13, 9-5) to a series-clinching 2-1 victory over Lindenwood (16-18, 7-8) Monday.
SEMO started strong out of the gate with three of its first four hitters getting a hit. With two outs, cleanup hitter Melton singled and Tatum Gerwitz scored to give the Redhawks a 1-0 edge in the top of the first inning.
LU loaded the bases on three-straight two-out walks in the bottom of the first, but Delaney Kell pitched around the jam to keep the Lions off the board.
The Lions loaded the bases again in the second inning, this time with one out. After a pitching change, reliever Elliott Stinson recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.
Stinson went on to retire eight in a row before giving way to Willow Van Haren. Van Haren followed with a 1-2-3 fifth inning.
LU pulled within a run on a RBI-single by pinch-hitter Danielle Franz in the bottom of the sixth. The Lions had the bases loaded with no outs before Maddie Carney entered the game and got three-straight outs to keep it a 2-1 contest.
After SEMO came up empty with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Carney forced LU to hit into three-straight groundball outs to claim her first save of the season.
Stinson (3-2) was credited with the win tossing 2.2 shutout no-hit innings with three strikeouts.
Offensively, SEMO outhit LU, 9-4. Dennis went 3-for-4 and Melton finished at 2-for-3. Brooklyn Saysoff pushed her hitting streak to six games with a base hit.
The Redhawks posted their fourth one-run victory of the season and ran their record to 8-1 against LU all-time..
WESTERN ILLINOIS 15, TENNESSEE 7 (5)
MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois softball delivered an explosive performance on April 7, 2025, defeating Tennessee State 15–7 at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium in Macomb, Illinois. The Leathernecks showcased dominant offensive firepower, tallying fourteen hits—including four home runs—and capitalizing on ten walks from Tennessee State pitching.
After falling behind 4–1 in the first inning, Western Illinois responded with a massive nine-run second inning, highlighted by a grand slam from Payton Brown. Brown had a career day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three home runs and six RBIs. Brown tied the single game home run record for WIU softball after her performance at the plate today. RyLee German added to the slugfest, blasting a home run and driving in three, while Malia Robertson also collected two RBIs.
Tennessee State jumped out early, fueled by lead off hitter Duke, who reached base four times and scored once. Spencer added a solo home run and finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Jean-Baptist knocked in two with a base hit.
On the mound, Western Illinois used a trio of pitchers. Lillie Wools started, allowing three earned runs in one inning. Libby Spaulding and Kathryn McChristy combined for the final four innings, with McChristy settling in to allow just one run over 2.2 innings while striking out two.
For Tennessee State, starter Castillo lasted only 1.2 innings, giving up five earned runs. The bullpen couldn't contain Western Illinois either, with Holder and Salcido combining to allow nine more runs.
The game ended in five innings via run rule, with Western Illinois turning two key double plays and leaving only four runners on base, maximizing nearly every scoring opportunity. The Leathernecks improve with a statement win, fueled by their powerful offense and timely pitching.

MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team swept a doubleheader with Morehead State Monday afternoon at Bettye Giles Field in Martin. The Skyhawks took game one, 11-2, in five innings, and won game two, 9-5.
UT Martin scored 20 runs on 23 hits over the two games and stole a total of nine bases, five in game one and three in game two. In the field, the Skyhawks were flawless Tuesday and have now committed just one error in the past four games.
In game one, Carly Ward went 2-for-2 with three runs, a stolen base and a hit by pitch, while Kyla Harley was 2-for-3 with a run, two RBIs and a stolen base. Kyrsten Brown was 1-for-1 in the contest with two runs, an RBI and two walks with Alli Robinson adding three RBIs on her sixth home run of the year. Morea Hodge rounded out the Skyhawks with multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.
In the circle, Natalie Kreuziger got the win by allowing one run on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts over 3.0 innings of work. Peyton Harris pitched one inning for UT Martin and gave up one run on one hit with no walks and a strikeout, while Joleanna Fox pitched the final inning and allowed one hit with no runs or walks.
In game two, Avary Makarewicz and Jordyn Hustey got the scoring started in the first with back-to-back home runs. The Eagles tried to chip away at the lead, but the Skyhawks never let them back in and held on for the 9-5 win.
Kennedy Brown, Harley, Makarewicz and Robinson each had two hits in game two, with Brown driving in three runs and Makarewicz driving in two. Hustey also had two RBIs in the game, while Harley stole two bases. Despite going 0-for-1 at the plate in the finale, Hodge scored twice and drew a career-high three walks.
Kreuziger also picked up the win in game two, going 5.1 innings and allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks to move to 4-4 on the year.
