ROBERT MORRIS 2, SOUTHERN INDIANA 0
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - University of Southern Indiana Women's Soccer created numerous shot chances for the second consecutive match on Thursday afternoon, but the Screaming Eagles came up short, 2-0, at Robert Morris University to begin a two-game road swing.
Following a 21-shot performance at home last Sunday, USI produced 14 shot attempts in Thursday's road contest at Robert Morris. Senior forward Emerson Grafton and graduate student Maggie Duggan, who are one and two in leading the Eagles in shots this season, combined for half of USI's shots on Thursday. Grafton tallied four shots against the Colonials, while Duggan recorded three attempts. Grafton also had a shot on goal. Senior forward Peyton Murphy had a pair of shots.
On the defensive end, Southern Indiana redshirt goalkeeper Anna Markland matched her season total with five saves off 15 shots faced on Thursday. Freshman defender Tierney Mullady played 79 minutes in her first career start and notched one shot.
Grafton got USI going early with a couple of shot attempts. However, Southern Indiana ran into early adversity just past the 13-minute mark of the contest when a red card reduced the Eagles to 10 players on the field for the rest of the match. The Screaming Eagles nearly overcame the early setback in the 25th minute when a long-range shot by Grafton went off the crossbar and could not initially be hauled in by the Robert Morris goalkeeper.
The game remained scoreless until the 34th minute when Robert Morris got on the board off a lunging header on the back end of a long cross. The goal energized the Colonials to a handful of shots down the stretch of the opening half, but Markland and the Eagles kept the game to a one-goal differential going into halftime.
Nearly 10 minutes into the second stanza, Robert Morris doubled its lead to 2-0. The Colonials scored on a low cross that was poked into the corner netting.
Southern Indiana tried to cut into the deficit with a couple of corner kicks and a string of shots with nearly 20 minutes to go, but to no avail. Markland kept USI within two in the final minutes after a pair of saves with under eight minutes left, including a charging save coming off the goal line. Robert Morris went on to carry its 2-0 lead into the final whistle.
EASTERN ILLINOIS 1, IU INDY 0
CHARLESTON, Ill. - Eastern Illinois broke through the tight possession battle late in the second half to win the 2025 home opener at Lakeside Field.
EIU moves to 1-2 on the season, while IU Indy falls to 0-2.
Both teams were flip-flopping possession throughout the first half, with IU Indy holding momentum with six shots, four of them being on target.
The Panthers and Jaguars continued their close fight until late heroics by EIU's forward Alex Tetteh racing down the left wing and finding the back of the net with the assist coming from Kate Germano.
With not a lot of time left, the EIU defense stood strong, with Panthers goalie Ella Kratochvil recording five saves.
Outside of the goal scored, Abby Reinl contributed three shots, and multiple Panther attackers recorded a shot apiece.
DRAKE 5, WESTERN ILLINOIS 0
MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois Women's Soccer fell 5-0 to Drake Thursday afternoon. The Leathernecks entered the match looking to build on their first win of the season, but could not slow down a Bulldogs team projected to finish near the top of the Missouri Valley Conference.
Drake controlled much of the first half, putting pressure on the WIU back line from the opening minutes. Goalkeeper Ariel Bernard made several early saves, including stops in the 10th and 11th minutes, to keep the game scoreless. The Bulldogs broke through in the 27th minute on a goal from Eve Blakey. The Leathernecks went into the half scoreless, though only trailing by 1.
The Bulldogs extended their advantage throughout the first half with multiple goals, which extended the lead to 5-0.

LINDENWOOD 2, EVANSVILLE 1
ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The Lindenwood women's soccer team (3-0-0) scored a pair of second half goals for a thrilling come from behind 2-1 victory over Evansville (1-1-0) in Thursday evening's home opener. The victory moves Lindenwood to 3-0 for the first time since the 2020 season.
The Lions were the aggressors early on, taking the first six shots of the match, all within the first nine minutes of play. However, the Purple Aces weathered the storm without conceding a score, and in the game's 14th minute, Taylor Johnson got behind the Lindenwood defense to score the evening's opening goal on an assist from Taylor Wehrer.
Facing their first deficit of the young season, Lindenwood would stay on the attack to record the game's next three shots but were unable to find an equalizer. Evansville tried to extend their lead with a four-shot barrage in the half's final five and a half minutes, but Caroline Ritter and the Lindenwood back line held strong to keep the score at 0-1 heading into the break.
14 minutes into the second half, a shot by Anna Johnson was blocked and carried over the end line for a Lindenwood corner kick. On the set piece, Rachel Johnson delivered a ball to the far post that connected with Allison Schrumpf, who headed the ball past the Evansville goalkeeper and into the back of the net to tie the game. It was the Lions' second corner kick conversion of the season.
With less than 10 minutes remaining in the game, Sophia Mueller put a quality shot on goal that was saved by Evansville's Elke Travis. However, after leaving her feet to make the save, Elke was unable to corral the ball, and amidst a sea of bodies in front of the net, Mattie Ohlsen was able to get her boot on the rebound to poke the ball through the posts for the go-ahead score.
Now with the lead, the Lions defense went to work, allowing only one off-target shot from Evansville for the remainder of the game to secure a 2-1 victory in the home opener.
Lindenwood outshot Evansville 18-11, more than doubling their combined shot total of 15 coming into the contest. Anna Johnson led the Lions with four shots.
Caroline Ritter put in another solid outing, posting another five saves to bring her season total to 16.
