MOREHEAD STATE 1, WESTERN ILLINOIS 0
MOREHEAD, Ky. - Freshman defender Addison Petry's first career goal catapulted the Morehead State women's soccer team to a 1-0 Senior Day win over Western Illinois on Sunday at the MSU Soccer Field in Morehead, Ky. The victory snapped a three-game skid for the Blue and Gold and marked the fourth straight year in which the team won its Ohio Valley Conference opener.
Morehead State (3-7-0/1-0-0) made some formational changes from previous contests and the moves appeared to pay off.
With the win, MSU evened out its home record this season at 3-3. The Blue and Gold also ended a dubious streak of having gone winless over the last two years having a week off between games. The team now sits 1-3-2 in those contests. All three of the team's victories this season have been shutouts.
Western Illinois (1-10-0/0-1-0) dropped its 10th straight game since winning the season opener and its eighth in a row away from home. On the season, the Leathernecks have been outscored 41-4.
Morehead State put up a season-high 28 shots, but only Petry's found the back of the net.
Both teams had additional quality chances to get on the board but saves by Western Illinois' Lillian Johns and MSU's Claire Cress kept the game at just one goal.
In addition to their lead in shots, the hosts also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks and made fewer fouls (7 to 10). The Eagles had the game's lone offside call, while WIU received the only card.
MSU sophomore forward Ava Peck had a game and team-season high six shots for the Blue and Gold. Three others had three and a total of eight had multiple attempts.
Abigail Schilling and Hattie Mourning each had two shots to lead the Leathernecks.
Johns made 11 saves in net for WIU. Cress was credited with four saves, while the Eagles also had two team saves.
MSU had a 52-48 edge in possession, with the Eagles on the attack in the Leathernecks' defensive zone for 62 percent of their time with the ball. Conversely, the visitors had the ball on Morehead State's side of the field for 36 percent of their possession time.
It was just the fourth meeting between the two teams, and the Eagles now lead the series 2-1-1. MSU is 1-0-1 at home in the history between the two and has yet to be scored upon on its own field.
LINDENWOOD 1, SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 0
ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The Lindenwood women's soccer team (4-2-3, 1-0-0 OVC) defeated Southeast Missouri (0-10-0, 0-1-0 OVC) by a score of 1-0 at Hunter Stadium on Sunday afternoon to begin conference play. It was the Lions' fifth shutout performance of the season.
The Lions were in control from the start, outshooting the Redhawks 10-2 while maintaining 68% of the possession in the first half. However, despite turning four shots on goal, Lindenwood was unable to find a score in the opening 45 and the match went to the break tied up at 0-0.
The Lions kept the pressure on in the second half with four more shots in the first 15 minutes before finding a breakthrough goal in 64th minute of the game. After Mackenzie Compton drew a foul to set up a free kick, Allison Schrumpf was able to connect with Anna Johnson, who rose above the SEMO defense in the box to get a head on the ball and redirect into the goal for the go-ahead score.
It was Johnson's second goal and Schrumpf's first point of the season.
The goal proved to be enough, and the Lindenwood defense stood strong for the remainder of the game, only allowing three total shots on goal, all of which were easily handled by goalkeeper Caroline Ritter, who completed her fifth clean sheet of the season.
Lindenwood finished the match with 22 total shots compared to just nine for SEMO. Rachel Jackson and Mackenzie Compton led the Lions with six shots each.
The win moves Lindenwood's record in OVC openers to 3-1 and improves their series record against Southeast Missouri to 2-2-3.
EASTERN ILLINOIS 2, SIUE 0
CHARLESTON, Ill. - Eastern Illinois women's soccer won its Ohio Valley Conference opener for the first time since the 2018 season as the Panthers collected a 2-0 win over SIUE on Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field.
Returning from an injury that has sidelined her for the last couple of weeks, Katiebeth May provided the Panthers with the first goal of the day in the closing minutes of the first half.
May sent a shot to the upper right corner in the 43rd minute with the assist provided by Camylle Graves as she brought the ball forward down the left hand side of the attack zone.
The Panthers made that lead hold up until the final six minutes when Ella Onstott flicked ahead a turnover in the midfield zone to a breaking Abby Reinl. Reinl beat back-up goalkeeper Kristen Keller with a shot to the low right that hit the post and ricocheted across to the back of the net. The goal was the 16th of Reinl's career as she moved into a tie for 10th on the Panthers career goals scored list. Reinl's goal came in the 84th minute.
Ella Kratochvil posted her third straight clean sheet making two saves as EIU improved to 4-4-2 on the season, 1-0 in the OVC.
SIUE fell to 1-8-1 on the year, 0-1 in the OVC. Audrey Roberts and Amanda Dean finished with the two Cougars shots on goal.
LITTLE ROCK 1, TENNESSEE TECH 1
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - A Little Rock goal in the waning moments of regulation turned the tide and pushed the Tennessee Tech soccer team into a 1-1 draw in the club's 2025 Ohio Valley Conference opener Sunday afternoon.
With the Golden Eagles less than a minute away from victory behind a 1-0 edge, the Trojans (2-3-3, 0-0-1 OVC) flipped the script with a goal off of a corner kick that pulled the match even with only 32 seconds remaining. Candice Kilderry lined up for the corner, and despite heavy traffic in front of the net, the bid alluded everyone and snuck just inside the far post for Kilderry's third goal of the year.
The score ultimately put a lid on a dramatic afternoon of soccer that saw a three-hour lightning delay before the start of the contest as well as another 30-minute delay with just over seven minutes left in the second half.
Tech (0-6-5, 0-0-1) jumped on the board late in the first stanza on a Katie Toney goal for her first score of the season and 17th of her career to move into a four-way tie for fifth place on the program's all-time career goals list. The McMinnville, Tenn. native is now knotted with Bailey Taylor (2019-23), Andrea Meloff (2009-12) and Robin Vince (2001-02).
Toney's goal was set up on a Lucia Cuadra pass that saw Cuadra flick a ball over the top toward Toney inside the box in the 41st minute. Cuadra earned her first assist of the season on the feed.
Toney would go on to lead the Golden Eagles in shots with five, which included a try early in the second half that banged off the post. The senior forward paced all players in the contest with three shots on-fame. Maria Schuller led the match with six total shots, but was denied by Maggie Conrad midway through the second on her only try on-goal after Conrad made a leaping stop to poke the ball over the crossbar.
Conrad picked up three saves, while Peyton Urban halted six shots across the way.
The Golden Eagles attempted 14 total shots, second-highest in a match this season after taking 15 total attempts in the club's previous contest against North Alabama on Sept. 14.
