MACOMB, Ill. - Tennessee Tech opened up Ohio Valley Conference play on a high note as the Golden Eagles pulled out a five-set victory over Western Illinois Thursday night.
Tech (4-9, 1-0 OVC) completes the two-match series with the Leathernecks Friday afternoon at 2 p.m.
Bella Powell finished the match with 17 kills, while Ava Schubert had 14. Jordan Karlen collected 45 assists, while Audrey Berkebile had nine kills and 16 digs. Powell also had 14 digs and Karlen 11 to complete double-doubles.
Keyana Cruse led WIU (3-11, 0-1 OVC) with 11 kills, while Kennedy Adair had 10. Jaleah Bauss had 11 assists, while Karlie Lane had 17 digs.
The Golden Eagles used an 8-0 run after an 11-all tie in the opening set to take a 25-16 victory. Tuva Falk led the way in the first set with five kills.
The second set opened with the Leathernecks scoring the first two points, then Tech scored six straight, then a pair of Berkebile service aces and two service errors allowed the Golden Eagles to go up 12-5. However, WIU rallied to tie the set at 20, then take a 22-20 lead on a seven-point run. Berkebile knotted the set at 22, then Falk gave Tech a 23-22 lead. The Leathernecks rebounded, taking a 26-24 win to even the match at a set each.
The third set had the Golden Eagles rush out to a 4-0 lead, then put together another 5-0 stretch to take a 13-7 lead. Tech never looked back, claiming a 25-15 win in the third set. Powell had seven kills in the set to lead the way.
WIU claimed the fourth set, jumping out to a six-point lead and cruised to a 25-19 victory to send the match to a deciding fifth set.
Ava Schubert led Tech in the finale, going 4-for-4 on attacks, while Berkebile and Powell each had two kills each. In a battle worthy of a fifth-set decision, there were 10 ties and seven lead changes. The set was even for the final time at 11-all as Tech scored the final four points with an attack error, a Powell service ace, a Schubert kill and a set error giving Tech the 4-0 run to close out the match.
