MACOMB, Ill. - On Tuesday afternoon at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium, Western Illinois University's baseball team achieved a strong 12-3 win over St. Ambrose University.
Their offensive strength and effective relief pitching were key factors in this win. With this victory, the Leathernecks improved their season record to 3-4, scoring across five different innings and securing a total of 12 hits against the Bees.
WIU leveled the score in the second when Isaiah Monge managed to steal home. Wandel Campana then crossed home plate on a wild pitch, pushing WIU ahead 2-1. To extend their advantage, Liam Bushey and Cordell Coburn each added runs in the third inning, bringing the lead to 4-1.
In the fourth inning, the Leathernecks burst out with five runs on six hits. Krayton Morse hit a single that brought in two runs, while Joe Connolly and Coburn each contributed an RBI. Monge then finished the inning with a double to center field, making it 9-1 for the Leathernecks. St. Ambrose scored twice in the sixth, but Western came back strong in the seventh.
Kamryn Link's triple brought in two more runs during a three-run inning, and Paul Osting added another RBI, pushing the score to 12-3 and securing control of the game for the Leathernecks. Brett Buchanan pitched two innings without giving up any runs and struck out two batters.
Overall, they allowed three runs and struck out seven opponents. Monge, Hoover, Osting, Morse, and McClintock all got hits as Western dominated throughout the day.
MEMPHIS 24, LITTLE ROCK 5
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Little Rock suffered a 24-5 setback at the hands of the Memphis Tigers during a Tuesday contest at Gary Hogan Field. The Trojans (6-2) move quickly along in their schedule this week, leaving Thursday for a weekend series that begins Friday at Missouri State.
Memphis (3-5) found its offensive footing early, scoring six runs over the first two frames. Angel Cano hit his fourth home run of the year to get Little Rock on the board in the first, but the Trojans were unable to score again until the fifth inning. By that time, the visiting Tigers had taken a 19-1 lead.
SIUE 17, SAINT LOUIS 7
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Mack Mitchell's grand slam capped an improbable comeback as SIUE baseball scored 17 unanswered runs to score a 17-7 win over Saint Louis Tuesday in seven innings at Roy E. Lee Field.
SIUE improved to 3-5 with the win.
SIUE led 13-7 going to the seventh inning. Ethan Willoughby and Isiah Kettler both singled and Daniel Gierer drew a walk to load the bases with two outs for Mitchell.
Mitchell finished 3-5 with a pair of home runs and eight RBIs to power a Cougar offense that finished with season highs in runs and hits (15).
The Billikens (0-8) used two hits, four walks and two hit batters to score seven times in the top of the first inning to chase SIUE starter Noah Thompson.
The Cougars scored twice in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a Willoughby two-run single.
Another RBI-hit from Willoughby and a two-run single by Kyle Hepburn and Mitchell's first blast, a three-run shot, led to a seven-run third inning and pushed the Cougars ahead 9-7.
Gage Franck drove home a run with a groundout in the fourth and Willoughby picked up his fourth RBI of the game in the fifth inning to swell the lead to 11-7.
Willoughby finished 4-5 with the four RBIs.
Mitchell singled to drive in a run and Chase Bloomer drove home another in the sixth inning to make it 13-7.
The Cougars used three pitchers to shut out the Billikens after the first inning. Trent Koehler worked 1.1 innings allowing two hits and striking out one. Brennen Grams pitched three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out four to earn his first win. Wyatt Doak pitched the final two innings, striking out two.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 11, TENNESSEE TECH 1
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee State erupted for eight runs over the final three innings to hand Tennessee Tech an 11-1 loss in eight innings Tuesday afternoon at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
The Golden Eagles were limited to three hits and pushed across their lone run in the sixth inning, but the Blue Raiders broke the game open late with a pair of home runs in the seventh and added another run in the eighth to end it early.
Despite the loss, Braxton Lewis allowed one earned run on two hits, striking out one.
Tech used six pitchers over the 7-inning game.
Tennessee Tech (5-4) threatened early, putting runners in scoring position in the second inning when Eddie Garza walked, and Jackson Rooker doubled, but Middle Tennessee starter Abel Albarran escaped the jam without damage. The Blue Raiders struck first in the second inning on an RBI single by Clay Badylak.
Middle Tennessee added two runs in the fifth on an RBI single by Brett Vondohlen and a sacrifice fly from Tyler Minnick to make it 3-0. Tech answered in the top of the sixth when Garza reached on a wild pitch that allowed Jorsixt Jimenez to score from third, trimming the deficit to 3-1.
That was as close as the Golden Eagles would get. The Blue Raiders responded immediately with a solo home run from Dean O'Neill in the bottom of the sixth, then broke the game open in the seventh with a five-run inning that included a two-run homer by Brett Rogers and another solo shot from O'Neill.
Tennessee Tech starter Braxton Lewis took the loss, allowing one run over two innings. Five Tech pitchers combined to give up 14 hits. Rooker recorded Tech's lone extra-base hit with a double, and the Golden Eagles drew six walks but stranded 10 runners.
MURRAY STATE 7, UT MARTIN 5
MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team competed for the full nine innings but fell short to Murray State 7-5 at Skyhawk Field.
TJ Dunsford (double, RBI, run scored) and Colten Payton (double, RBI, run scored) led UT Martin (3-5) with two hits each. Garner Anderson drove in a run off a triple while TJ Grines (three stolen bases), Andrew Davis (one stolen base) and Dunsford (one stolen base) were active on the base paths.
Anderson got his first career start and went one inning with a strikeout, no runs allowed, no walks and only one hit. Drake Bayles threw four innings out of the bullpen and punched out two batters while Jake DeValk (one inning), Gehrig Wright (two strikeouts), Gabe Bryant (1-1, one inning, three strikeouts) and JP Nunn (one inning, one strikeout) also saw time in relief.
The Skyhawks started the contest with Anderson stranding one Murray State runner on a groundout to finish the first. UT Martin stole three bases in the home half (Grines 2, Davis 1) that led to the game's first run when Payton plated Grines on a sacrifice fly to right.
Bayles entered in the second and threw three scoreless innings (two 1-2-3 innings) before the Racers (6-2) knotted the game up at one in the top of the fifth. The Skyhawks snapped that tie from four runs with two outs in the bottom part of the frame. Davis singled to right to score Grines from second, then a dropped fly ball allowed Davis to score and make it 3-1. Dunsford doubled off the center field wall to score another run and Anderson continued his slugging ways with a triple down the right field line to bring UT Martin's lead to 5-1.
Murray State was able to chip away and eventually carry a two-run lead into the bottom of the ninth inning. The Skyhawks brought the tying run to the plate but were unable to complete a ninth inning comeback.
#11 OLE MISS 13, SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 3
OXFORD, Miss. - Southeast Missouri (3-6) fell to Ole Miss (9-0) in a 13-3 defeat on Tuesday at Swayze Field. The Redhawks managed to score in three separate innings but was unable to overcome Ole Miss' six-run second inning.
SEMO began the game with a strong offensive effort. Caleb Klein singled up the middle and later scored on an RBI single by Joe Hall, giving the visiting team an early 1-0 lead. However, Ole Miss quickly responded with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, making it 3-1 after one inning.
In the second inning, Joe Terranova walked and later scored on a single by Carson Schrack. Despite the run, the Rebels extended their lead significantly by scoring six runs in the bottom half of the inning, resulting in a 9-2 score after two innings.
The Redhawks added another run in the fifth inning when Klein walked, stole second, and scored on another RBI single by Hall. The score tightened slightly to 9-3, but Ole Miss maintained control.
In the seventh inning, Ole Miss further extended its lead. A three-run homer by W. Furniss highlighted a four-run inning, bringing the final score to 13-3 in favor of Ole Miss.
