NASHVILLE - Tennessee Tech came out with authority on Sunday as the Golden Eagles made quick work of their suspended contest from Saturday, scoring three runs in the extra inning to take an 11-8 victory, then blasted the Tigers 14-1 in five innings in the finale to take the series sweep.
Ashley Capelouto capped off a tremendous week as she went 2-for-3 in the finale with a grand slam. She finished the week batting .538 with eight runs scored, four home runs and 13 total RBI, making her a potential candidate for OVC Player of the Week.
Sofia Carroll and Makayli Harris also drove in three runs in the contest.
TSU struck first in the bottom of the first as Jasmine Blackburn hit a solo home run.
Tech answered with seven runs in the top of the second. Bailee Stack pushed the first run across on a bases-loaded walk, then Harris cleared the bases ahead of her with a three-run double. Olivia Evans brought Harris home on a triple to right, then Carroll's single sent Evans home. Abbee Klinefelter added one more run as she drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 7-1.
The Golden Eagles extended their lead with an RBI groundout for Carroll to drive in Skylar Gooden, then, in the fourth, Carroll picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice as Stack came home. With the bases still loaded, Capelouto hit her fourth home run of the week and second grand slam. Tech added one last run in the fifth as Gooden drove in Klinefelter with a single to short.
Emily York went the distance, allowing one run on five hits for the victory, walking none and striking out five. TSU starter Kristian Holder took the loss, allowing three runs on one hit with two walks and a strikeout in one inning of work. Miriam Gordon allowed three runs on two hits and a walk without recording an out, then Tianna Salcido threw the next inning and two-thirds, allowing two runs on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Courtney Richardson threw the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on six hits and two walks.
Before game three started, Tech wrapped up the suspended Saturday contest, scoring three runs in the top of the eighth. Ella Grace Harvey added to her tally for six total RBI in the contest as she hit a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Alina Schlaeter. Klinefelter then hit a two-run single to bring Bishop and Capelouto home.
York got two strikeouts and a fly out to right to end the contest to preserve the victory.
