#8 SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 60, #4 MOREHEAD STATE 55
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Southeast Missouri (14-17, 8-12 OVC) edged #4 Morehead State (18-14, 13-7 OVC) with a 60-55 victory, capitalizing on a strong fourth quarter to secure the win. The Redhawks benefited from a perfect 15-for-19 performance at the free-throw line to maintain their lead. Remarkably, #8 SEMO became the first team in OVC Tournament history to win multiple games in the same tournament, advancing to the OVC semifinals for the first time since the 2022-23 season.
Carmen Taylor opened the scoring with a 3-pointer for the Redhawks, assisted by Raissa Nsabua. The Eagles gained momentum with Marie Sepp and Laura Toffali each contributing layups to take an early lead. Ainaya Williams made key free throws and a layup, narrowing the gap for the Redhawks. At the end of the first quarter, the Eagles led 15–12.
The Eagles maintained an early lead with strong interior play, scoring 12 points in the paint. The Redhawks responded with three 3-pointers, including back-to-back shots from Da'Kariya Jackson, to narrow the gap. Both teams traded baskets in the latter stages, with Williams hitting a late free throw. At halftime, the Eagles led narrowly, 31–29.
Nsabua connected on a 3-pointer early, assisted by Jackson, giving the Redhawks a slight edge. Kearra Jones added to the lead with a layup and jumper, both facilitated by Taylor's assists. Zoey Rixter maintained the momentum with a jumper, leveling the score at 38 after the Eagles briefly regained the lead. At the end of the third quarter, the Eagles held a narrow 43–40 advantage.
Lexi McCully's steal led to a quick layup by Jones, keeping the game tight early in the quarter. Nsabua and McCully each hit crucial 3-pointers, helping the Redhawks keep pace with the Eagles. Williams knocked down a pair of free throws to give the Redhawks a slim lead with under three minutes remaining. McCully sealed the victory with four consecutive free throws in the final 18 seconds. The game concluded with the Redhawks securing a 60–55 win.
#3 SOUTHERN INDIANA 72, #7 SIUE 44
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - University of Southern Indiana Women's Basketball made its 2026 Ohio Valley Conference Championship Tournament debut in the quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon and put the clamps down on Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, capturing a 72-44 victory to advance to Friday's semifinal round.
Coming off a first-round bye as the third seed, USI Women's Basketball (21-9, 14-6 OVC) quickly established itself in Thursday's contest and never looked back against seventh-seeded SIUE (16-16, 8-12 OVC). The Cougars advanced from Wednesday's first round after a 63-49 win over the sixth-seeded University of Tennessee at Martin.
An all-around team effort for the Screaming Eagles saw four players score in double figures on Thursday. Junior guard Shannon Blacher dropped a team-high 15 points on 5-9 shooting with three makes from beyond the arc and added three assists. Junior guard Sophia Loden tallied 13 points on 5-8 shooting with three three-pointers and totaled seven rebounds and four assists. Junior forward and All-OVC Second-Team honoree Chloe Gannon recorded 12 points with four boards and three helpers, while freshman forward Channah Gannon registered 10 points with nine rebounds. Senior guard and All-OVC First-Team selection Ali Saunders scored nine points, pulled down eight rebounds, and dished out six assists.
As a team, USI shot for 43 percent (29-67) overall, a blistering 56 percent (10-18) from three-point range, and went 4-6 at the free-throw line. The Screaming Eagles were plus 10 on the glass, 45-35.
The Screaming Eagles' OVC-leading defense showcased its stifling ability on Thursday, which was USI's 17th win this season when holding an opponent to 60 points or less, and the ninth win limiting the opposition to under 50 points. USI's defense held SIUE to 30 percent (17-56) shooting from the floor and had only one player score 10-plus. The Cougars were held to 3-24 from outside for 12 percent. SIUE went 7-10 at the charity stripe.
The Screaming Eagles wasted no time getting going on Thursday with a first-possession three-pointer by Loden. Over a large chunk of the first quarter, the Eagles built a 14-0 run, leading to a 17-5 advantage by the two-minute mark of the opening frame. The run was sparked by a pair of triples and a couple of makes inside by Channah Gannon. USI led 17-8 through the first 10 minutes of action.
USI's advantage reached double digits early in the second quarter following a three-pointer by Blacher, giving the Screaming Eagles a 22-10 lead. SIUE cut the deficit briefly back down to single digits in the middle of the second quarter, but Chloe Gannon answered with two buckets that pushed the Screaming Eagles in front by 13, 28-15, with under four minutes to play in the first half. Gannon tacked on another basket by the end of the half to send USI into halftime ahead 31-17.
Early in the second half, the Screaming Eagles went on a 7-0 run that was capped off by a Saunders trey that extended USI's lead to 21, 40-19. Despite the third quarter settling into a defensive battle midway through, Saunders drilled another triple inside of two minutes, and then Blacher hit a desperation runner right before the end of the third to give the Screaming Eagles a 50-28 advantage going to the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, it was more of the same from USI. An early run in the fourth forced SIUE into a timeout after the Screaming Eagles went ahead 58-32. Shortly after the timeout, Blacher splashed home a three-pointer, and Loden knocked down a jumper. Blacher swished in another triple just after the halfway point of the fourth to put USI in front by 33, 67-34, as one of the final exclamation points in the big quarterfinal win.
