UT MARTIN 7, WESTERN ILLINOIS 1
MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team took both games of a doubleheader to open a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series with Western Illinois Saturday at Bettye Giles Field. The Skyhawks shut out the Leathernecks in game one, 2-0, and then scored seven unanswered for the 7-1 win in game two.

The Skyhawks needed just one run to take down the Leathernecks in the opener, but they came up with two, both in the third inning. Kennedy Brown began the inning with a single, stole second, moved to third on wild pitch and then stole home on a double steal with Dylan Scott. Later in the inning, Avary Makarewicz scored Karena Recrosio, who reached on a single, on a sacrifice fly to cap UT Martin's scoring at two.

Ashtyn Green and Natalie Kreuziger combined for the shutout with Green getting the win and Kreuziger earning a save. Green allowed no runs on four hits with three strikeouts in the first five innings, while Kreuziger tossed two hitless, scoreless innings to close out the game.

Kennedy Brown led UT Martin in game one by going 2-for-3 with one run scored, while Karena Recrosio and Kyrsten Brown had the other two hits for the Skyhawks.

In game two, Maria Luna put Western Illinois on top in the second when she hit her third home run of the season over the right centerfield wall.

It took two innings for the Skyhawks to answer, but they answered in a big way in the fourth by scoring five runs. With the bases loaded and one out, Ava Scott hit an infield single that scored two runs, followed by a walk from Jordyn Hustey, which allowed Makarewicz to score on a wild pitch. In the next at-bat, Kyrsten Brown drove in two runs on a bunt single.

In the sixth, the Skyhawks tacked on two more runs on another sacrifice fly from Makarewicz and an RBI-double from Kyrsten Brown. The two runs capped seven unanswered by UT Martin, giving them the win.

Kyrsten Brown was 2-for-3 in the game with three RBIs and a double, while Ava Scott was also 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Kyla Harley scored twice and had a triple, while Kennedy Brown was also 2-for-3.

Payton Harris picked up the win in a 4.2-inning relief effort in which she allowed no runs on just two hits with one strikeout and no walks.

TENNESSEE STATE 7, MOREHEAD STATE 3

MOREHEAD, Ky. - The Tennessee State softball team opened Ohio Valley Conference road play Saturday with a split against Morehead State, dropping game one, 4-1, before earning a 7-3 victory in game two to secure its first win of the season and even the three-game series.

Miriam Gordon got the start in the circle, pitching 3.2 innings while allowing four runs on five hits. Chelsi Ervin provided relief, closing out the contest with 2.1 scoreless innings.

Kailyn Jean-Baptiste and Jace Jackson anchored the defensive effort, combining for 11 putouts. Hailey Hunt led the Tigers offensively with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, while Alexis Woods drove in TSU's lone run.

Morehead State struck first, plating two runs in both the third and fourth innings. Jace Jackson broke up three scoreless innings with a four-pitch walk. A stolen base and sacrifice fly allowed Jackson to reach third base before a passed ball allowed her to score, giving TSU a 1-0 lead with one out. Kailyn Jean-Baptiste followed with a single to right field. A well-timed bunt by Alexis Woods, paired with a Morehead State wild pitch and error, added another run for the Tigers. Kyra Taylor kept the rally going with a double to right-center field, scoring Woods. A single by Mariyah Brown and a tricky triple by McDaniel made it 6-0 before Morehead State collected the final two outs.

The Eagles responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and one in the bottom of the sixth.

Jackson continued in dominant fashion with a seventh-inning leadoff double down the left-field line, followed by a Hailey Hunt off-the-wall double to add some insurance.
