SOUTHERN ILLINOIS 5, WESTERN ILLINOIS 0
CARBONDALE, Ill. - Western Illinois women's soccer battled through the heat Sunday afternoon, but ultimately fell short in a 5-0 loss to Southern Illinois.
The Salukis struck twice in the opening 45 minutes to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. Aylie Haycock opened the scoring before Brooke Gosse added a second goal, giving Southern Illinois the advantage heading into the break.
Southern Illinois added three more goals in the second half, with Maya Dixon, Dior Knorr and Gosse each finding the back of the net. Gosse finished with two goals on the afternoon.
The Salukis controlled the offensive attack throughout the match, holding a 14-4 advantage in shots and an 8-1 edge in shots on goal. Reagan Miller made one save to preserve the shutout, while Western Illinois goalkeepers Lillian Johns and Mahee-Lee Caron combined for three saves.
SIUE 2, VALPARAISO 2
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Carson Bohnenstiehl scored with 10.1 seconds left on the clock Sunday as SIUE women's soccer gained a 2-2 tie against Valparaiso in the home opener for the Cougars at Korte Stadium.
With the game moved up due to sweltering temps in Edwardsville, the game was halted with 7:23 left in the first half when lightning struck the area near Korte Stadium.
When play resumed, Valpo held a 1-0 lead and took it into the locker room at halftime.
SIUE's offense kicked into gear late in the first half and much of the second half. The Cougars held an 18-10 shot advantage after 90 minutes and boasted an 11-2 edge in the second half.
Zeniyah Russell came off the bench for her first collegiate goal, a 1-1 equalizer at the 51:54 mark. She took a pass from Claire Nieroda and hit nothing but net.
Valparaiso, now 0-1-1 this season, fought back with a goal at 80:01 from six yards out from Alyssa Thomas.
SIUE, now 1-0-1 this season, continued to push with corner kicks and throw ins within its final third for much of the last five minutes of the game. Bohnenstiehl, among other SIUE players, pushed forward after Nieroda served the ball in the box. Bohnenstiehl's push of the ball over the line was reviewed and upheld by game officials with just a handful of ticks left on the game clock.
MOREHEAD STATE 2, BRESCIA (KY.) 0
MOREHEAD, Ky. - Morehead State sophomores Olivia Lowe and Kennedy Harmon each scored the first goal of their collegiate careers, leading the Morehead State Soccer Eagles to a 2-0 victory over Brescia (Ky.) at MSU Soccer Field Sunday afternoon.
Today's contest kicked off at 1:00 P.M. ET in the midst of a hot, muggy day, leading to four total hydration breaks, not including halftime.
The Eagles (1-1) dominated offensively, registering 41 shots with 20 on target, while recording a shutout. The 41 shots tied the school record for most attempts in a game, dating back to October of 2002 when the Eagles took on rival Austin Peay and launched 41.
MSU kicked off today's contest with a goal in the 19th minute. Charlotte Lee once again lined up a corner kick, launching it right in front of the goal, perfectly placed for Lowe to head it past the goalkeeper to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The ball appeared to also ricochet off a Bearcat defender's head on the goal line but Lowe was credited with the score.
The first two goals of the 2026 season have both been assisted by Lee off of corner kicks.
Morehead State continued the offensive pressure, shooting 21 times in the first half, but ultimately heading into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Following the break, the Eagles never took their foot off the gas, shooting a total of 20 more times in the second half.
Three minutes into the second half, sophomore Natalie Lentine broke free in front of the goal, missing a shot by a couple inches, as it banged off of the right side of the crossbar. Sophomore Jade Walton rebounded the shot, instantly firing another which was ultimately saved by the Brescia keeper Laura Thompson.
Thompson was a busy keeper for the visitors, stopping 15 of the Eagles' shots. Hannah Grosshans entered for the final five minutes and made two saves, while there was also a defensive team save. Brescia finished with 18 saves.
The Eagles continued to apply pressure, eventually leading to another goal being scored, this time from Harmon, at the 69:35 mark of the match. Harmon's goal was assisted by freshman Ashlyn Francis - her first career assist.
Morehead State dominated the possession, controlling the ball for 75 percent of the match and keeping it on Brescia's defensive side for 93 percent of the time. MSU's offensive onslaught was also evident in that it held an 11-0 edge on corner kicks and was flagged for being offside 10 times.
Sixteen of the 20 Eagles (non-goalkeepers) that checked in registered at least one shot, finishing with 20 combined shots on goal.
Between Marshall and Brescia (Ky.), MSU has now held opponents scoreless for the past 137 minutes and 18 seconds. Brescia, a member of the NAIA, would have seen its season start at 0-1 but the Bearcats counted it as an exhibition match.
UT MARTIN 4, CHICAGO STATE 0
CHICAGO - The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team used four second-half goals to breeze by Chicago State Sunday, 4-0, at the Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep Soccer Field, for its first win of the season.
Despite taking 10 shots in the first half, the Skyhawks only placed two on target. However, thanks to the UT Martin back line limiting Chicago State to just one shot in the opening half, the two teams entered the break in a scoreless tie.
In the second half, the Skyhawks pelted Cougar goalkeeper Kamila Aguilar with 18 shots, 10 of which were on target. Alex Weihs scored the would-be game-winner in the 48th minute, on a pass from Peyton Cook, giving her team the lead right out of halftime.
Unni Wolf added to the tally with goals in the 58th and 66th minutes, with Weihs and Yaritza Trejo assisting on the first goal and Allie Carroll assisting on the second. In the 79th minute, Weihs got her second assist of the day, with help from Caroline Moore, on a goal by Alberte Amby, capping the game's scoring at 4-0.
Mac Titus notched her first clean sheet of the season by saving each of the two shots she faced in the match, giving her the 11th shutout of her career and moving her into sole possession of third place on the school's all-time shutouts list.
SAINT LOUIS 5, LINDENWOOD 0
ST. LOUIS - The Lindenwood women's soccer team (1-1-0) suffered a 5-0 defeat at Saint Louis (1-1-0) on a steamy afternoon at Hermann Stadium on Sunday. The Lions were unable to overcome an early Billikens blitz, not recording a shot until SLU had already scored four goals.
The Billikens were on the attack early, applying heavy pressure to the LU defense that resulted in the opening goal just under eight minutes in, as Audrey Smith followed a teammate's close-range attempt off the post to make the score 1-0 in favor of SLU.
The Billikens remained aggressive, and after Caroline Ritter turned away a shot from outside the box by Hope Kim, Audrey Smith again found herself in the right place at the right time to poke the loose ball home inside the far post to put SLU ahead 2-0 in the 13th minute.
The Lions were unable to stop the bleeding, and in the 14th minute, the Bills converted on a set piece from the corner to take a commanding 3-0 lead before adding another score in the 16th minute, with the Lions again unable to corral a free ball in the box following a save by Caroline Ritter before a Billiken got their foot on it.
Lindenwood settled in and held Saint Louis scoreless for the next 27 minutes, but at the 42:31 mark, Lea Simpson found her way to the near post and flicked one into the back of the net on a cross by Ava Scorfina to extend their lead to 5-0.
The two sides would play to a stalemate in the second half, with the Lions limiting the Billikens to just six shots in the final 45 after surrendering 15 attempts in the first half.
Lindenwood totaled just five shots in the contest after recording 21 in Thursday's season opener. Meanwhile, Caroline Ritter matched her career-high with eight saves.
EASTERN ILLINOIS 0, UIC 0
CHARLESTON, Ill. - Eastern Illinois improved to 1-0-1 on the season following a 0-0 draw on Sunday afternoon at UIC.
Ella Kratochvil turned away six UIC shots on goal to pick up her second straight clean sheet this season. Last year's OVC Goalkeeper of the Year moved into a tie for third on the EIU career shutouts list posting her 16th career shutout on Sunday.
It marked just the third time in program history that EIU has opened a season with back-to-back shutouts. Last time was in 2022, the first time was back in 2010.
The Panthers were limited to two total shots on goal coming from Brooklynn Greene and Madi Watt. EIU registered a total of six shots in the match.
The match was delayed shortly after the start of competition with a weather delay. EIU did not play any players other than Kratochvil the full 90 minutes.
Casey Kittridge anchored the backline playing a team-high 77 minutes followed by Colleen Bauer with 69 minutes and freshman Sophie Oberheim logging 61.
UIC moved to 0-1-1 on the season. Jillian Higgins and Emmy Higgins both had two shots on goal for the Flames.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 2, SOUTHERN INDAINA 0
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - University of Southern Indiana Women's Soccer fell in a 2-0 contest against Middle Tennessee State University on Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field.
Sunday's game, which was originally scheduled for 1 p.m. and was pushed back to a 5 p.m. start due to extreme heat, was the Screaming Eagles' second match of their season-opening three-game homestand.
Each side recorded nine shot attempts, with USI (0-1-1) edging Middle Tennessee (2-0-0) in shots on goal, 5-4. The Blue Raiders had eight corner kicks compared to two for USI.
Graduate forward Payton Seymour and freshman midfielder Shea Krakowski led USI with two shots taken, with Krakowski being one of five Screaming Eagles with a shot on goal. Between the posts, sophomore goalkeeper Merrick Schwalbach collected two saves.
Setting the tone in the first half in what was going to be a tough battle for possession, the defenses made it difficult for either side to get a clean shot attempt toward goal. One of the better looks for USI in the opening half came off the foot of sophomore midfielder Olivia Hass toward the low corner that was saved. The game remained scoreless going into halftime with the two sides combining for nine shots and three on goal.
Middle Tennessee broke the deadlock to take a 1-0 lead with a goal by Hailey Phillips in the 55th minute, poking the ball into goal after a battle for a loose ball inside the box. USI looked to answer with a free kick by Krakowski before the 60-minute mark, but the attempt went over the crossbar. The Blue Raiders doubled the lead to 2-0 with a goal by Megan Carroll in the 69th minute and held on to the two-goal lead for the rest of the match.
Sunday's score snapped USI's consecutive shutout streak, which reached five straight clean sheets dating back to the end of last season and one away from tying the program record. The defensive scoreless stretch going back to last season reached 530-plus consecutive minutes without allowing a goal, only 25 minutes shy of a new program record.
