From 2012 to 2021, Walter served as associate commissioner for the Missouri Valley Conference, where he was involved with all levels of governance and strategic decision-making. He helped co-led the development and implementation of the MVC’s 2015 strategic plan and led benchmarking and goal-setting initiatives conducted by governance bodies and coaches’ group across all sports.

Walter was also assistant commissioner of the Summit League from 2008-11, served as associate director of compliance for the Big Ten (2005-07) and as a compliance officer at the University of Utah (2004-05).

He has served on the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee (2020-21), the Division I Council (2017-19), the Division I Legislative Committee (2017-20), the Division I Interpretations Committee (2016-20) and the Enforcement Interpretations Process Working Group (2019-20).
