#4 MOREHEAD STATE 3, #5 TENNESSEE TECH 0
MOREHEAD, Ky. - Morehead State served up the 2024 OVC Beach Volleyball Tournament with another exciting match as the Eagles prevailed 3-0 over Tennessee Tech.
The Nos. 4-5 pairs staked the home team to a 2-0 lead. Just like the previous two matches with the Golden Eagles this year, all five pairs went, or were playing in, all three sets.
At No. 5, Courtney Fitzgerald and Amelia Nott grabbed the initial Eagle point as they fought to a 21-16, 19-21, 15-9 triumph. Next door, in the fours, Brenna Bommer and Lily-Kate Carver persevered for a 21-15, 21-23, 17-15 victory.
Needing just one more win to halt the match with the decision in hand, it came down to the Nos. 2 and 3 pairs as both were nearly deadlocked in the same fashion. The No. 3 pair of M.E. Hargan and Peighton Isley finally prevailed with a 21-14, 18-21, 16-14 win to clinch the win. At No. 2, Shea Hefner and Irene Wogenstahl were serving for their match at 14-11 in the third when the horn blew to halt the action.
At No. 1 Sydney Wyman and Bella Marita were also knotted at a set apiece as they dropped their first 21-19 but rallied to win 27-25 in the second. Matches that do not end in a final decision are not counted in each pairs' records.
#3 LINDENEDWOOD 3, #6 EASTERN ILLINOIS 0
MOREHEAD, Ky. - Lindenwood started Thursday's action with a 3-0 sweep of the Panthers from Eastern Illinois after taking the first three duels. During postseason competition, play stops once a team reaches three match points.
The five pair of Amber Schade and Elise Llorens automatically won their match due to a forfeit by Eastern Illinois. Abby VanBuskirk and Kailee McGee also won at the four pairs against Laura Paniagua and Kate Dean by scores of 21-15 and 21-19.
All-OVC First Team selections Nyah Wilson and Maider Soto were able to clinch the opening round win at the one pairs with scores of 21-12 and 21-14 vs. Kaitlyn Flynn and Sylvia Hasz. It marked the first ever win for the Lions at the OVC Championships.
Abby Jacobs and Katie Malzahn led their match at the two pairs with a score of 21-16 before the match was called. Jessie Seidel and Annalie McWhorter also were leading their duel at the three spot after taking the first set with a score of 21-9.
#1 UT MARTIN 3, MOREHEAD STATE 0
MOREHEAD, Ky. - The Ohio Valley Conference Championship tournament started off on the right foot for the University of Tennessee at Martin beach volleyball squad, who earned a 3-0 sweep over event host Morehead State this afternoon.
The No. 1 seed Skyhawks (16-15) advance to the third round tomorrow, where they will take on No. 2 seed Chattanooga at 1 p.m. CT in the winner's bracket of the tournament.
Playing to decision, UT Martin quickly set the tone with a pair of victories in the first wave of matches. All-OVC second teamers Kayla Carrell/Reagan McGee teamed up at No. 5 to collect their 18th victory of the spring, making short work of the Eagles with a 21-8, 21-13 triumph. Haeleigh Paulino joined forces with Kristin Phillips at No. 4 for a 21-15, 21-15 victory – their 10th of the season together – to make the team score 2-0.
Sydney Eckhardt/Dylan Mott made short work of the competition at No. 2 to cap off the sweep. The All-OVC first team honorees produced a convincing 21-9, 21-6 win for their team-best 19th triumph of the season, giving the Skyhawks their seventh consecutive victory in the OVC Championship tournament in the process.
Olivia O'Keefe/Jenna Vallée (No. 1) and Ryan Rednour/Addy Vaughn (No. 3) were each tied in the second set of their respective matches as the time the clinching point was secured.
#2 CHATTANOOGA 3, #3 LINDENWOOD 0
MOREHEAD, Ky. - Chattanooga beach volleyball was a force to reckoned with on the opening day of the OVC Tournament in Morehead, Kentucky, sweeping their way past No. 3 seeded Lindenwood to advance the Mocs into the next round of the bracket.
The Mocs failed to drop a set in their opening round tilt with the Lions, grabbing straight-set victories on Courts 3, 4, and 5 to secure their spot in the OVC Semifinals tomorrow against No. 1 seed UT Martin.
The winner of tomorrow's semifinal matchup between the Mocs and Skyhawks will determine one half of the OVC title game, but the loser will still have a chance to battle their way back into the final.
The Mocs made quick work of the tournament's No. 3 seed, with UTC failing to drop a set to the Lions on Thursday. Paige Gallentine and Kaye Gresham set the tone for the Mocs, quickly snatching up a 21-13, 21-13 win on Court 4 to get UTC on the board. This was followed up by a 21-19, 21-13 win by Morgan Romano/Julia Lawrence on Court 5, putting the Mocs a win away from clinching the match. Chattanooga wouldn't need to wait long, as the top three courts each won their first set before UTC's No. 3 pairing of Joy Courtright and Maddie Lecik sealed a straight-set victory 21-14, 21-10 to punch UTC's ticket into the OVC Semifinals.
