JACKSONVILLE STATE 2, GARDNER WEBB 1
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - Jacksonville State scored two goals within a seven-minute span in the second half to earn its first win of the season with a 2-1 result over Gardner-Webb on Sunday afternoon at the JSU Soccer Field.
The Gamecocks bounced back to gain a split on the opening weekend of the season after falling to Ball State on Friday night to start the 2015 season. The Runnin' Bulldogs dropped to 0-2 on the season with the setback. JSU has won back-to-back matches over GWU coupled with last season's 1-0 win in Boiling Springs, North Carolina.
After a scoreless 50 minutes, JSU induced a GWY penalty inside the box to set up a penalty kick by senior Olivia Drapes. Drapes tallied her first career goal with a punch shot past the keeper in the right back post. The Round Rock, Texas native gave the Gamecocks their first goal of the season.
With the 1-0 advantage Jax State kept the pressure on GWU over the next seven minutes as senior Kelsey Bright took a ball deep in the box on the left side before serving it to the front of the box to find freshman Claire Petersen open for her first career goal in the 57th minute.

UNC ASHEVILLE 2, EASTERN KENTUCKY 1
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Sophomore Emmi Carroll scored in the 86th minute to pull the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team to within one of host UNC Asheville; however, the comeback fell just short as the Colonels lost to the Bulldogs, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Greenwood Field.
Carroll’s goal – the first of the season for EKU – came directly off a free kick from just outside the box. But, it was too little, too late.
The Bulldogs took the lead in the 13th minute when Caroline Houser scored off an assist from Alex Stadford. Houser then assisted on a goal by Paige Trent in the 62nd minute to give UNCA a much-needed cushion.

AUSTIN PEAY 1, CHATTANOOGA 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Freshman Jennifer Smith headed home the game-winning goal in double overtime, Sunday, as Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team defeated Chattanooga, 1-0.
For the second time in three days, the Lady Govs (1-1-0) were faced with a golden goal scenario in double overtime. But this time, fortune favored Austin Peay on the road at Finlay Stadium. Fellow freshman Sydney Dawson made a run down the right side of the pitch, and sent in a high cross to Smith in the box, who connected with a low header to beat the keeper.
It’s the sixth-straight victory over Chattanooga (0-1-0), improving the all-time record to 7-3-0 in favor of APSU.
Beginning in the first half, Austin Peay was relentless in making runs forward down each of the flanks. Controlling possession in the midfield set up scoring chances for senior Shelby Olszewski to make plays in the box, but was caught offside twice early on.
In the second half, Olszewski had another scoring opportunity, this time on a diving header which sailed wide. Olszewski, along with Smith, Kirstin Robertson and McKenzie Dixon, each had two shots in the contest.
The Lady Govs attempted five shots in each of the two regulation periods, outshooting the Mocs 11-3 in the match.

Little Rock's Fali Garuba attacked the Belmont defense all evening long, including three breakaway opportunities in the final 15 minutes. Garuba tested the Bruins in the 75th, 78th and 86th minutes, but new Bruin goalkeeper Stephanie Bukovec (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) held her ground firmly on each occasion.

MURRAY STATE 2, MISSISSIPPI STATE 1
STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Murray State women's soccer team defeated Mississippi State Sunday in Starkville, 2-1,with goals by Harriet Withers and Taylor Richerson.
Murray State (1-0) was the first on the board in the 19th minute, when Richerson found Withers in front of the net. Withers kicked a hard shot high and out of reach for Mississippi State goalie Tanya de Souza for the first Racer goal of the season.
However, the 1-0 lead wouldn't last long as freshman Kiley Martens scored the Bulldogs' first goal with an assist from freshman Elva Astthorsdottir in 33rd season. The score would remain 1-1 for the rest of the opening stanza, making things level at the break.
In the 61st minute, a red card was issued to Courtney Robicheaux after a hard tackle on a sliding Richerson inside the 18-yard box, giving MSU a penalty kick opportunity. Richerson then cooly converted on the first penalty kick of her career to gave the Racers a 2-1 lead.
Lightning in the area caused for a rain delay in the 75th minute. Coming back from the break, the Bulldogs made a change at goal, playing Rhylee DeCrane. Despite Mississippi State (0-2) leading the game in shot attempts, 8-5, bu it wasn't enough as the Racers pulled out the 2-1 victory.
Coach Jeremy Groves was impressed with his team's performance, saying that from his back line to his midfielders to his forwards, the team played well.
This was the first time in program history that the Racers have defeated a team from the SEC in regular-season play. The Racers are now 6-9-1 in opening games and 4-5-1 on the road in opening games.

MIDDLE TENNESSEE 1, TENNESSEE TECH 0
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - It took nearly 114 minutes to decide a winner, and in the end, Middle Tennessee State University scratched and clawed its way to a 1-0 victory over the Tennessee Tech soccer team amidst another packed house at Tech Soccer Field.
The Golden Eagle defense more than stood their ground in fending off 24 shots over the duration of regulation, the first overtime, and almost half of the second extra session, yet the Blue Raiders (1-0-0) would ultimately find a way to steal a win in Cookeville mid-way through the second OT.
In the 114th minute, MTSU senior Grace Summers took control of the ball, found a crevice in the Tech defense, and soared one past the diving try of Golden Eagle keeper Kari Naerdemann to push the Blue Raiders to a season-opening victory by the slimmest of margins. Summers finished with a match-high five shots.
After a first-half that featured only three total shots-on-goal, Tech (0-2-0) ratcheted up things defensively in slowing down a Middle Tennessee attack that recorded 19 total shots in the second stanza and two overtimes combined. Freshman Kari Naerdemann made 10 saves in her second collegiate start, seven of which came after half time.
Freshman Alyssa Montgomery, sophomores Mary Francis Hoots and Lauren Brewer, and junior Kalyn Pruett made a slew of strong defensive plays in halting the Blue Raiders, who also took seven corners and came up empty on all seven chances.
MTSU senior keeper Kelsey Brouwer had to make just one save en route to the shutout victory, but the stop came at a critical juncture in the tilt. With two and a half minutes remaining in regulation, Golden Eagle junior Abi Gearing smoked one from the outskirts in the box that was just deflected off the diving attempt by Brouwer to keep the match scoreless.
Tech will hit the road for the first time in 2015 on Friday, Aug. 28, traveling to East Tennessee State for a 6 p.m. CT showdown with the Buccaneers. The Golden Eagles will return back home on Sunday, Aug. 30 to tangle with the University of Alabama at 7 p.m.
