WESTERN ILLINOIS 3, EASTERN ILLINOIS 2

Both teams scored early in the contest with Western Illinois scoring 2:26 into the match and EIU countering with a goal at the 6:30 mark.

Western Illinois broke away early as Meagan Wilson found the net on an assist from Tyra Markey.

Molly Hawkins answered for EIU with the first of her two goals on the afternoon.  The senior evened the game on an assist from Kathleen MacKinnon.

Hawkins would put EIU up 2-1 as she scored unassisted twenty seconds into the second half.

WIU would knot the game at 2-2 in the 73rd minute as Ashley Kuhlmann scored with the assist credited to Gina Scaffidi and Michaela Cody.

EIU goalkeeper Maddie Lyon made eight saves with her counterpart Victoria Kappel making two saves for the Leathernecks.

Hawkins had three of the Panthers four shots on goal with MacKinnon picking up the other offensive shot.

EIU falls to 0-2-1 on the season and will play at Northern Iowa on Sunday afternoon.  WIU improved to 1-1.

CLEVELAND STATE 2, EASTERN KENTUCKY 1
RICHMOND, Ky. -
Freshman Bailly Bounds scored her first collegiate goal in the 6th minute to give the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team an early lead, but visiting Cleveland State rallied in the second half to earn a narrow 2-1 victory on Friday afternoon in the Colonels’ home opener at EKU Soccer Field.

Bounds’ goal was the result of a series of missed clearances in front of the goal by Cleveland State. The freshman from Las Vegas opportunistically swooped into the fray and buried a shot in the lower right corner of the net to put the Colonels up, 1-0.

CSU (2-0-1) began to assert itself after the early EKU (0-0-3) score, though. In the 11th minute, Toni Dickson scored from close range off a corner kick from McKenna Vento.

The Colonels nearly retook the lead later in the first half, when dangerous junior Cassie Smith broke free from the defense; however, Smith’s shot ricocheted off the crossbar.

The Vikings notched the decisive goal six minutes into the second half, when Vicki Havas scored off a rebounded shot by Peyton Lewis to give CSU a lead it would not relinquish.

Bounds led EKU with 3 shots in the game, two of which were on goal. Senior Amani Thomas attempted two shots.

Havas and Dickson fired four shots apiece for Cleveland State.

Freshmen defenders Emily Beaver and Kacy Eckley played all 90 minutes on the backline for EKU. Freshman midfielder Haley Kemper also went the distance for the Colonels.

Senior Samm Melton made six saves in goal for EKU.

The Colonels return to action on Sunday when they host UNCG at 1:00 p.m.

MOREHEAD STATE 2, BOWLING GREEN 1
MOREHEAD, Ky. -
Freshman forward Dani Wilson collected both goals, including an overtime clinching tally for Morehead State soccer (2-1) in its 2-1 victory over Bowling Green (2-1) Friday night under the glow at Jayne Stadium.

MSU outshot BGSU 16-14, including seven shots on goal. Wilson led the way with two shots, converting on each shot, while she was backed up by junior forward Angela Black, senior midfielder Macy Kootz, and senior defender Kelsey Gomez who each had two shots.

Wilson has had a productive start to her college career, scoring three goals over three matches, including two penalty kicks over that span.

Timm collected her first career assist on the match-winning goal by Wilson at the 98:35 mark. The Falcons generated their lone goal in the 64th minute when Leah Runkle converted a ricocheted shot by a teammate.

Senior goalkeeper Kaitlynn Murphy thwarted a season-high five shots by the visitors.

MSU will be back in action Sunday at 1 p.m. ET, as the Eagles take on Xavier.

INDIANA STATE 2, BELMONT 1
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -
The Belmont women's soccer team (1-1) was unable to recover from an early deficit on the road Friday night. The Bruins were held off at Indiana State (1-2), 2-1, for their first loss of the young season.

The Sycamores jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the 10th minute.  The Bruins regrouped and
thwarted several additional Indiana State scoring opportunities thanks to the defensive line and the quick hands of junior netminder Stephanie Bukovec (Toronto, Ontario, Canada).

Belmont earned a corner kick in the 32nd minute and freshman Allie Svoboda (Lisle, Ill.) used it to fire a shot toward the Indiana State goal.  Her attempt was stopped by Brittany San Roman.  ISU netted what would be the go ahead goal two minutes later.  The Sycamores held on to the 2-0 advantage into the break.

The Bruins opened the second stanza on fever pitch.  Less than two minutes in, senior Rachel Dill (Carmel, Ind.) fed classmate Cassie Blase (Waukesha, Wisc.) for BU's first goal of the night and her first of the season.  Belmont continued its attack on the ISU goal, looking for the equalizer.  However, the Sycamore goalkeeper was able to make crucial stops down the stretch to maintain the team's lead.    Belmont put fresh legs on the field in the final 15 minutes of regulation but was able to capitalize on scoring chances.

Sophomores Tara Austin (Beaumont, Texas) and Belicia Mendiola (McKinney, Texas) led the Bruins with three shots apiece while seniors Sydney Scheben (Union, Ky.) and Blase each tallied two shots.

Bukovec recorded five saves in the effort between the posts.

Belmont returns to action on Sunday afternoon with a dual at first-time opponent Wright State.  Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. CT.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 1, EVANSVILLE 0
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -
The Southeast Missouri women's soccer team remains undefeated on the season following a 1-0 win over the Evansville Purple Aces Friday.

The Redhawks improve to 2-0-1 on the season while the Purple Aces fall to 0-3.

Each half couldn't have been more different. The Redhawks dominated in the first half, outshooting UE and maintaining solid possession. Evansville came out aggressive and ready to play hard in the second half and shut down the Redhawk offense.

The Redhawks played in front of a home crowd of over 500 Friday evening.

Nelson remarked, "I loved the crowd tonight and I loved the international students being here because they live for the game. It was great to hear them in the crowd chanting and hearing lots of noise for our players."

The Redhawks started the game with a solid offensive showing. Southeast put up six shots to Evansville's two in the half while putting four shots on goal. Angie Mann scored her second goal of the season in the 15th minute of the game to put the Redhawks on the board. Mann tapped it past the keeper after Paige Luehmann sent it in. With the goal, Mann becomes the Redhawks' leading scorer on the season. It was Luehmann's second assist of the season.

Southeast would hold the 1-0 lead going into halftime.

Evansville came out in the second half and dominated the ball. The Aces put up 13 shots in the half while holding Southeast to just two. Despite putting up 13 total shots, the Aces only put three on goal in the half. Both of Southeast's shots in the second half were on goal; one each by Jenna Collingridge and Abby Klintworth.

The Redhawks held off the Ace attack to pick up their second win of the season with the 1-0 victory.

Natasha Minor was Southeast's shots leader with three in the game; all of which came in the first half. Mann put up two shots, both on goal, in the game.

Bronwyn Boswell and Molly Lear led the Aces with four shots.

Evansville finished with 15 shots while Southeast had eight. Evansville had seven corner kicks while the Redhawks didn't have any.

Southeast, who had 18 fouls through the first two games of the season, nearly doubled their season foul count with 16 in game. Evansville was called for eight.

Kindra Lierz (2-0-1) picked up the solo shutout, the 11th of her career. Lierz played all 90 minutes and recorded three saves.

Simone Busby (0-3) played all 90 minutes in goal for UE. Busby allowed the game winning goal and recorded five saves in the match.

The Redhawks return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. when they host Northern Colorado.

EAST TENNESSEE 1, TENNESSEE TECH 0
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -
Another strong defensive effort wasn't enough for the Tennessee Tech soccer team, as the Golden Eagles (0-3-0) were upended 1-0 at the hands of East Tennessee State in Tech's first road match of the year.

For the third consecutive tilt, Tech held an opponent scoreless in the first half, running their first stanza scoreless streak to 135 minutes to begin the season. In fact, the Golden Eagles limited a Buccaneers (3-0-0) squad that came in with four first-half scores in two matches to zero shots on-goal in the first 45 minutes.

Offensively, TTU produced the only two shots on-goal in the first period, an 18th minute blast by senior Taylor Blazei, and a 22nd minute rip by sophomore Lauren Brewer. Blazei paced Tech with four shots overall, one off the pace of ETSU junior Molly Collinson's match-high five.

ETSU revved it up in the second half en route to peppering five shots on-goal, one of which found the back of the net for the affair's lone goal. Scoreless into the 59th minute, the Buccaneers broke through behind a Sarah Zadrazil score after the senior mid-fielder received a through ball and chipped it over the try of TTU freshman goalkeeper Kari Naerdemann for Zadrazil's third goal of the season.

The Golden Eagles attempt at a late equalizer went begging after an Abi Gearing drive in the 84th minute was gobbled up by junior goalkeeper Jasmine Elliot. The Elliot stop was one of three saves made by the Preston, England native, while Tech's Kari Naerdemann was forced to make just four halts of the course of the match.

Gearing was one of six Golden Eagles to play all 90 minutes in the match, joining junior Kalyn Pruett, sophomores Mary Francis Hoots and Zoie Hensley, and freshmen Alyssa Montgomery and Mayra Tarraga Manzanal.

The Buccaneers won the shot battle, 14-7.

Tech will return home for a piece of history Sunday evening, welcoming in the University of Alabama for TTU's first ever home match against an SEC school. Kickoff under the lights is slated for 7 p.m. CT.

MIDDLE TENNESSEE 1, JACKSONVILLE STATE 0
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -
A goal in the 20th minute and great defense by Middle Tennessee State staved off a strong second half push by the Jacksonville State soccer team in a 1-0 win by the Blue Raiders at Dean Hayes Stadium on Friday night.

The loss dropped the Gamecocks to 1-2 on the season, while MTSU improved to 2-0 overall as both wins came against the Ohio Valley Conference. Jax State will look to bounce back again like they did last weekend on Sunday with an afternoon tilt with Lipscomb in Nashville, Tennessee. Kick off is set for 1 p.m.

MTSU's Cameron Cox gave her club the game-winning goal in the 20th minute after she drove the ball in to the box and scored off of a deflection. After a solid defensive effort by the Blue Raiders the rest of the way, Cox's goal would be all MTSU would need for the result. MTSU turned in 18 total shots and had eight of those by intermission. The Blue Raiders added 10 more in the second half.

The MTSU defense limited Jax State's offensive threat in the first 45 minutes as it allowed just two first-half chances by the Gamecocks.

The Gamecocks turned in a stellar second half performance with nine shots in the half, but could not put an equalizing goal on the board. MTSU goalkeeper Kelsey Brouwer made two key saves in the second half to preserve the win. Brouwer prevented both of Courtney Hurt's scoring opportunities in the second half. Hurt led the Gamecock threat in the second half with three shot attempts. JSU finished with 11 total shots after being credited with nine in the second period. Senior Kelsey Bright and freshman Madison Carruthers added two shots in the contest.

JSU sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Robinson registered double figure saves for the first time in 2015 with 10 stops. MTSU's Tori Hawkins carded a game-high four shots in the win.

The Lady Bisons of LU enter the Sunday contest unbeaten on the season after playing Cincinnati to a scoreless draw on Thursday night. LU blanked Ball State last Sunday for its first win of the season.

TROY 2, UT MARTIN 1
TROY, Ala. -
Despite a goal from freshman Sydney Norris, a pair of goals early in the first half proved too much to overcome for the University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team as they dropped their opening match of the 2015 Trojan Classic 2-1 to Troy.

UT Martin (1-2) was out shot by Troy (3-1) by a 21-6 margin, with the Trojans placing 11 shots on goal while the Skyhawks landed three. The Skyhawks were led by Norris whose only shot of the match was the lone goal for UT Martin. Defending Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week Saphyra Coombs-James led the squad with three shots while freshmen Maggie Burkett and Lisa Schmieder fired one shot each. In goal freshman MaKenzie Crawford nine saves, the most in her young career.

Troy (3-1) was led offensively by Brittany Yoder, who scored both of the Trojan goals while Alissa Jones and Chelsey Williams picked up an assist each. Jones led the Trojans with eight shots while Annabell Simpson and
Abby Reynolds joined Yoder with two shots apiece.
After allowing a pair of goals in the opening 20 minutes, UT Martin regained momentum with another strong second half for the third consecutive match. The Skyhawks cut the deficit in half in the 53rd minute on a goal from Norris.

After a free kick taken by Shelby Coleman was cleared inside the offensive zone, the ball was collected by Norris. The Sarasota, Fla., native made the most of her second career shot, firing a low shot from 19 yards out and into the bottom left corner to cut the deficit in half.

UT Martin, the nation’s youngest team in Division-I women’s collegiate soccer, started 10 freshman against the runners up in the Sun Belt Conference a season ago and controlled play for the opening minutes, using high pressure to keep Troy (3-1) on the defensive side of the field.

The match wouldn’t see its first shot until the 10th minute which saw Crawford make a diving save to her left with the Skyhawks’ defenders preventing a rebound shot from the Trojans.

Troy turned up the pressure and found the back of the net just two minutes later. Playing a long ball over the Skyhawks’ defensive line, Crawford rushed out goal to prevent the early scoring chance. However Williams got a touch just moments before the Skyhawks’ goalkeeper could collect the ball, sending it into the middle of the 18-yard box. Yoder collected the deflected ball and sent it into the right side of the net for the 1-0 Trojan lead.

After a pair of defensive stands by the Skyhawks against corner kicks, Troy doubled its lead in the 18th minute. Moments after UT Martin shutdown a scoring chance, the ensuring throw-in by the Trojans was collected by Williams once again. Williams fired a cross into the box that was collected by Alissa Jones. With the Skyhawks’ defenders all around, Jones laid for ball off for Yoder who slotted the ball into the net for her second goal of the match.

The matchup was just the second all-time between the Skyhawks and Trojans and the first since October 1998.

UT Martin concludes the 2015 Trojan Classic with a battle against defending Sun Belt champions South Alabama on Sunday. Kick off against the Jaguars is scheduled for noon.
