EASTERN ILLINOIS 3, CHICAGO STATE 1
CHARLESTON, Ill. -
Seniors Hannah Miller and Molly Hawkins both found the back of the net twice on Sunday afternoon as they helped Eastern Illinois pick up a 4-1 win over Chicago State on senior day for the Panthers at Lakeside Field.

EIU improved to 2-6-1 on the season and will open Ohio Valley Conference play next weekend at UT Martin.  Chicago State fell to 0-9.

The Cougars got on the board first as Jyllian Coggins scored Chicago State’s first goal of the season in the 35th minute.  Coggins beat EIU goalkeeper Hannah Veith to a loose ball near the top of the goal box and connected for the score.  Bri Kelly sent the first volley towards the net for the assist.

EIU tied the game less than two minutes later as Miller had a one touch goal on a good cross by Kathleen MacKinnon.   Miller was the Panthers most active offensive player on the day finishing with 11 shots including one that hit off the post and another off the cross bar.

Tied 1-1 at the half, Miller scored what proved to be the game winner in the 48th minute as she hit a low shot past a diving Gabby Klemp to beat the CSU keeper.  Kaci Schonert had the assist on that goal.

Schonert added a second assist in the 63rd minute as she had a cross from the right corner which Hawkins headed home for her sixth goal this year.

Hawkins seventh goal this season came in the 67th minute on an assist from Kayla Stolfa.  It was Hawkins third match this season with multiple goals as she leads the OVC in scoring.

Erin Morgan closed out the final 45 minutes in the goal for EIU making two saves.  Veith was credited with one save in her 45 minutes in the net.  EIU finished with a 13-4 shots on goal advantage.

Klemp made six saves for CSU before giving way to Taylor Conroy who made two saves.

BALL STATE 3, MOREHEAD STATE 1
MOREHEAD, Ky. -
A 12-save day by senior goalkeeper Kaitlynn Murphy wasn't enough as Morehead State fell to Ball State 3-1 at Jayne Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Offensive production was scarce for the Eagles throughout the contest as they only accumulated three shots on goal. The Cardinals countered with 15 of their own, including nine in the second half. Murphy returned after missing two games with an injury and led the way for the Eagles as she collected a career-high 12 saves, including a save off a free kick by senior midfielder Elaina Musleh. Murphy leaped into the air, falling to her right, and with a thrust from her right fist the ball soared over the cross bar for a highlight reel save. The save kept the match tied at zero heading into halftime.

After a scoreless first, the second half saw a flurry of offensive action beginning in the 67th minute. The Eagles struck first as senior defender Teig Palmateer went up for a header in the goalkeeper's box and was knocked from behind by a BSU defender. The contact led to a penalty kick for freshman forward Dani Wilson and she connected, giving MSU a 1-0 lead. She is now 3-for-3 on penalty kicks this season.

However, the Eagles would hold the lead for just a little over two minutes. In the 69th minute, freshman forward Abigail Boswell took a deflected ball and knocked it past Murphy for the tying goal and then in the 84th minute senior midfielder beat Murphy, putting the Cardinals up 2-1. Junior midfielder Gabby Veldman made it 3-1 as she scored off a deflection in the 86th minute.

Morehead State will be in action on Thursday as they start the OVC portion of its schedule on the road at Jacksonville State at 8 p.m.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 2, UNION 0
JACKSON, Tenn. -
Abby Klintworth scored a pair of goals in Sunday's 2-0 win over Union University (0-6).

With the win, Southeast Missouri (5-3-1) will carry a three-match winning streak into Ohio Valley Conference play which begins Friday.

The Redhawks and Bulldogs played 45 minutes of scoreless soccer in the first half of the match.

Southeast and Union tied with four shots each in the first half. Southeast had five corner kick opportunities in the half while Union had none.

The Redhawks had only one shot on goal in the opening half while the Bulldogs had two.

Much like the match against Arkansas State, starting keeper Alyssa Sickler was replaced by Kindra Lierz to start the second half.

The Redhawks came out of the break ready to play as the offense stepped up considerably in the second half.

Klintworth broke the scoreless tie in the 51st minute of the match. Jennifer Antonacci fed the ball into the box off a corner kick to a leaping Klintworth who headed the ball into the lower left corner of the goal to make it 1-0 Southeast.

It was Klintworth again as she widened the lead to 2-0 in the 78th minute with her second goal of the game. Maddy Karstens fired a shot off in the box that rebounded off the keeper. Klintworth capitalized on the situation and put it in to extend the lead to 2-0 for the Redhawks.

Union had a couple good chances to score in the second half but couldn't close on the opportunities.

Southeast outshot the Bulldogs, 15-9, with 11 shots coming in the second half. Seven of the Redhawks' shots were on goal. Southeast had a season-high nine corner kicks in the match.

It was a career day for Klintworth. Her two goals, three shots, three shots on goal, and four points were all single-game career highs for the junior. Natasha Minor also fired three shots off in the match.

Honeye Heydari led the Bulldogs with four shots, three of which were on goal.

Sickler and Lierz combined for the shutout. Sickler recorded two saves while Lierz had three in the second half. Lierz (4-3-1) earned the win in goal Sunday.

Kristen Francis (0-4) played all 90 minutes in goal for Union. Francis allowed two goals and stopped five shots on goal.

The Redhawks return home to open OVC play against SIUE and Eastern Illinois this weekend. The Redhawks shared the 2014 regular season title with SIUE. The Redhawks and Cougars kickoff at 7 p.m. Friday while Sunday's match with the Panthers is slated for a 1 p.m. start time. Both matches can be viewed for free on the OVC Digital Network.

AUSTIN PEAY 10, ALABAMA STATE 2
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -
Following the recognition of four Lady Gov seniors, Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team had an offensive explosion, Sunday, earning a 10-2 victory over Alabama State at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.

It’s the third-highest single-game total for APSU and the most goals scored since Aug. 19, 2011 at Alabama A&M. In addition, it’s the highest goal total scored at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field in program history.
The Lady Govs (4-4-0) have now netted 20 goals over the course of a three-game winning streak, which is more than last season’s overall total (19). Austin Peay showcased its depth, Sunday, with eight different players finding the back of the net.

Sophomore Kirstin Robertson opened the scoring for APSU in the 6th minute, finding room down the right side and sailed a left-footed shot past the diving keeper for her first tally of the season. Junior Gina Fabbro would be the next Lady Gov to land on the scoresheet in the 16th minute, following a saved shot with a second try for a goal, her fifth of the year.

After a takeaway, the Lady Govs made a run towards the box, and drew a penalty kick on the play. Junior Nicole Wojcik stepped up to take it, and calmly fired a shot in the top left hand corner in the 26th minute.

In the 35th minute, the Hornets scored their first goal of the game as Emily Fleming boxed out a defender in the box, and sent a ball in the net. However, one minute later, Wojcik answered back with her second of the afternoon, corralling a through ball from former teammate at Hartford CC, sophomore Brooke Nigrin, who then beat the goalkeeper for the score.

With 20 seconds remaining in the first half, freshman Jennifer Smith converted the game’s second penalty kick, giving her three goals on the year. APSU held a 13-5 shot advantage at the break, and continued to press in the final stanza to finish with 27 shots.

Senior Nikki Filippone replaced sophomore Lindsey Todd in net at halftime after Todd made two saves.
In the 50th minute, senior Shelby Olszewski netted a goal after a shot was rebounded, her third score of 2015. Soon after, in the 55th minute, Alabama State added a second after a short pass from Kaedi Walther was played to Kayla Edwards in the center of the box.

Freshman McKenzie Dixon kept pace with Fabbro for the team lead in goals scored. After her original shot was blocked, Dixon maintained possession to score for the fifth time in three games. In the 67th minute, she would deliver an assist courtesy of a corner kick, with junior Mary Ruth Locastro moving up from her center back position to head it home.

As the game reached the 70-minute mark, the Lady Govs tallied two additional goals, the first coming from freshman Emilee Howard. Following a break towards the 18-yard mark, Howard make a move leading to a right-footed shot past the keeper, the first goal of her collegiate career. In the 75th minute, APSU earned its 10th score after an own goal was awarded with sophomore Caroline Wistrom lurking in the box.

With under five minutes remaining in the contest, head coach Kelley Guth substituted each individual senior – Filippone, Olszewski, Courtney Sheppard and Taylor Van Wagner – in front of an appreciative crowd.

Austin Peay’s next match will be its Ohio Valley Conference opener on the road at Eastern Kentucky, next Sunday at noon CT.

TROY 3, BELMONT 1
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
Even with a gutsy equalizer goal late in the second half, the Belmont women's soccer team (1-6-1) was unable to pull out the win in its non-conference finale on Sunday afternoon at Rose Park.  The Bruins were held off by Troy (7-2), 2-1, in the first meeting between the programs since 2004.

Troy made several threats to score early but the Bruins defensive line held steady.  BU took advantage of a pair of early free kicks on its hunt for a goal but was unable to connect once inside scoring range.  Junior Stephanie Bukovec (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) did her part in keeping the Trojans off the board and leaped for a diving save for the Trojans' first serious attempt at the goal in the 24th minute of the half.

The Trojans increased their time of possession 10 minutes later but the Bruins maintained their defensive consistency to keep them from finding the back of the net.  Finally, Troy was able to penetrate the stingy defense in the 39th minute.  Using a chip shot into the upper left corner of the net, TU was able to put one on the scoreboard.  However, the BU defense buckled down and held the visitors off for the remainder of the half.

Both teams emerged from the break aggressively minded and immediately entered a back-and-forth battle through the midfield.  Despite both teams reaching the others' attacking third, neither was able to fully capitalize on chances.  TU grappled for more time of possession but struggled to get past the Belmont defense.

The Bruins dug in their heels in the 73rd minute and found a way to knot the score.  Senior Rachel Dill (Carmel, Ind.) served a long ball to the awaiting foot of junior Meg Howard (Brentwood, Tenn.), who smoothly headed the ball into the upper right corner of the net.  The goal energized the field as both realized time was ticking toward extra time if the stalemate continued.  The Trojans did not wait long and used a deflection in the midst of heavy traffic in the box to net their second goal of the day barely two minutes later.

In the waning minutes, the Bruins never stopped fighting for another equalizer goal, continuing to push the ball into TU territory.  However, time would not be on BU's side as Troy was content to play keep-away to help secure its 2-1 victory.

Troy held the advantage in shots, 15-8, and corner kicks, 4-1.

Howard led the Bruins with three shots, two of which were on goal.  Five other Bruins notched one shot apiece in the effort.

Bukovec went the distance of the contest and finished with nine saves between the posts.

Belmont returns to action on Thursday, September 25 at Rose Park.  The Bruins open OVC play, hosting Tennessee Tech with a kickoff set for 6 p.m.

TENNESSEE TECH 1, CHATTANOOGA 1
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Tech soccer team wrapped up its non conference slate with the club's third draw of the year, as the Golden Eagles (2-4-3) and Chattanooga played their way to a 1-1 tie among an overcast and windy Sunday afternoon at Tech Soccer Field.

The double-overtime affair marked the fifth time this season, and fourth in the last five matches, that Tech has played in a pair of extra sessions.

The Golden Eagles kicked off the scoring in the 21st minute, using a well timed corner to capture the early 1-0 edge. The sophomore connection of Karigan Owens and Mary Francis Hoots propelled Tech to the first score of the match, after an Owens corner slammed off the noggin of Hoots and into the back of the net. Owens notched her first career assist on the play, while the score gave Hoots a team-best two goals on the season.

The Golden Eagles took the one-goal margin into intermission, marking the seventh time in nine matches this year that TTU has blanked an opponent over the first 45 minutes. Tech held a 9-3 shot discrepancy over the Mocs (2-6-1) in the first stanza.

Chattanooga bounced back in the second half en route to 11 shots, including the equalizer in the 65th minute. Just like Tech, the Mocs used a corner to split the pipes as sophomore Amanda Ortiz received a cross from fellow sophomore McKenzie Gregg, before Ortiz took care of the rest for her second goal of the season. Gregg tallied her second assist of the year on the deadlocking score.

The Golden Eagles went on to force overtime, thanks in large part to a key Kari Naerdemann save in the 77th minute. Tech appeared to have control near its own box, but an errant pass was taken by UTC's Abby Linder, who quickly found herself all alone with just Naerdemann to beat. However, Linder's shot went begging, thanks to a brilliant diving attempt that saw the freshman goalkeeper get just enough on it to redirect the blast and keep the match tied.

Naerdemann ended the tilt with five saves, matching the total of UTC's Katie Emig, who stopped five shots as well.

The first overtime featured a shot by both sides, with Linder doing the honors for Chattanooga, and senior Taylor Sutton smacking one just wide in the 98th minute. Things intensified in the second extra session with five combined shots, three from the Golden Eagles.

Tech's season-high 17 shots marked the third straight match that TTU has had at least 10 shots. Sophomore Zoie Hensley led the charge with four, two of which were on-goal. The Mocs had 17 shots as well, paced by sophomore Peyton McCollum's six, one of which banged off the top of the cross bar in the 84th minute.

It's nothing but conference play from here on out, as OVC action opens up on Thursday, Sep. 24. The Golden Eagles will travel to Nashville to tangle with Belmont at 6:30 p.m. CT.

IUPUI 3, MURRAY STATE 0
MURRAY, Ky. -
The Murray State women's soccer team was defeated by IUPUI on Sunday at the Michael A. Carroll Track and Soccer Stadium in Indianapolis. A big second half for the Jaguars gave them the 3-0 win over the Racers.

The Racers fell to 4-3 this season, while IUPUI improved to 4-4-1.

It was a quiet first half for the Racers. Harriet Withers led all Racers with three shots taken in the first half. Marissa Burroughs followed closely behind with two shot attempts but the Racers couldn't seem to get the offense going.

In the second half, IUPUI broke a scoreless tie and got on the board first with a goal in the 58th minute. A minute later, IUPUI scored again with a goal that banked off the top corner of the goal frame. In the 86th minute, the Jaguars found the back of the net again and the goal sealed the Racers fate.

Withers ended the match leading the Racers in shot attempts for the match with four.

Defenders Racheal Foxley, Ali Critcher and Nyomi Devine played all 90 minutes on the defensive side for the Racers.

Shelby Haworth had four saves and allowed three goals.

Murray State starts Ohio Valley Conference play Thursday at Eastern Kentucky at 3 p.m. CT. The Racers will come play their last non-conference match against St. Louis at Cutchin Field on Sunday at 1 p.m. Live Steaming for the match against Saint Louis will be available courtesy of the OVC Digital Network.
