EASTERN ILLINOIS 3, IPFW 1
CHARLESTON, Ill.- Molly Hawkins scored multiple goals for the second straight Friday as the Eastern Illinois Panthers were able to make that scoring stand up with a 3-1 win over IPFW at Lakeside Field on a hot and humid Friday afternoon.
EIU improved to 1-3-1 with the win and will play at Indiana State on Sunday. IPFW fell to 0-5.
Last week Hawkins scored two goals for the Panthers in a double overtime loss at Western Illinois. This week the senior scored just over three minutes into the second period as Ali Carlson fed a pass into the box that Hawkins touched in for a goal.
Hawkins was a factor in the Panthers second goal seven minutes later as she took a deep pass from Carrie Caplin and led Hannah Miller towards the goal as Miller finished off the break with a goal in the 55th minute.
The Panthers scoring was capped in the 58th minute with Hawkins finishing off a header past IPFW starting goalkeeper Kiley Dunning. Bianca Navejas served the ball into the box for Hawkins to connect.
EIU goalkeeper Maddie Lyon turned away two good goal scoring chances by the Mastodons finishing with six total saves. IPFW was able to slip one past the freshman in the 79th minute as Brooke Bishir took a skip pass through the crease from Rachel Good to score.
EIU finished with ten shots on goal compared to seven for IPFW. Dunning recorded all seven saves for IPFW. Haley Lydon played the final 23 minutes in net for IPFW and did not face a shot on goal.
Miller, Hawkins and Navejas were credited for all ten EIU shots on goal.
TROY 4, AUSTIN PEAY 0
MOBILE, Ala. – Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team fell behind early in its initial match of the Jaguar Classic, Friday, at The Cage, leading to a 0-4 loss against Troy.
The Lady Govs fall to 1-3-0 on the year after their second-straight loss, while the Trojans improve to 5-1-0.
Austin Peay looked to catch the opposition off guard in the first minute, with sophomore Kirstin Robertson testing the keeper with a shot on goal. After the save was made, Troy stormed out of the gates seconds later to find a scoring chance at the top of the 18-yard box. A cross by Brooke McKee was delivered to Chelsey Williams, who scored her first of three goals on the evening.
As Austin Peay fought to regain momentum, the Trojans maintained its rhythm early in the contest. The duo of
McKee and Williams struck once again in the ninth minute with a cross from the byline sent six yards in front of the keeper, where Williams would power it home.
Troy continued to put shots on net 15 minutes in, but sophomore keeper Lindsey Todd made three saves in that span to withstand the attack.
In the 37th minute, the Trojans pulled ahead 3-0 on a goal by Kristen Rendall. A ball was curled in from the right side, and the ensuing shot would get help from the far post as it deflected into the net.
The Lady Govs regrouped and made a keeper change after halftime, with senior Nikki Filippone playing the final 45 minutes. In the 56th minute, Williams put a bow on the hat trick. After a turnover, Williams sped off on a breakaway, evading the defense to place a shot in goal.
Freshman Jennifer Smith and senior Taylor Van Wagner each took two shots in the second half in a late charge by APSU. The Lady Govs were out-shot 21-11 in the contest.
Todd was handed the loss in goal after allowing three of four goals with five saves. Filippone also made five saves in her second appearance of the season.
Austin Peay continues play in the Jaguar Classic, 2:30 p.m., Sunday, against host South Alabama.
VALPARAISO 2, BELMONT 1 (2OT)
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A strong second half rally forced the first double overtime decision of the season for Belmont women's soccer team (1-3) on Friday night at Rose Park. The Bruins were held off in the second overtime by Valparaiso (2-2), 2-1.
It was a tale of two halves for the Bruins with the opponents each claiming one in regulation.
Valpo opened the first stanza on an offensive tear, notching four corner kicks in the first four minutes.
The Crusaders remained entrenched in Belmont territory for long stretches but the Bruin defense worked hard to break up numerous crosses and passes. One of BU's best scoring chances came at the sharp right foot of sophomore Meg Howard (Brentwood, Tenn.) in the 27th minute of play. Unfortunately, her attempt sailed over the crossbar.
The back and forth battle continued for the teams for the remainder of the half. VU was able to capitalize on its fifth corner of the half to catapult its way onto the scoreboard behind a series of short passes to the foot of Rita Craven who found the back of the net at the 36:16 mark. BU battled back to turn the tide in the waning minutes and kept the Crusaders from adding to their tally before the end of the stanza.
The second half proved to be a different story with the Bruins firmly in control from the opening whistle and looking sharp on both sides of the ball. Finally, Belmont made its move. Sophomore Meg Howard (Brentwood, Tenn.) fed rookie Allie Svoboda (Lisle, Ill.) in the 60th minute for the equalizer goal, sending the Friday Night Futbol fans into a frenzy in the stands.
However, the teams remained stalemated throughout the rest of regulation and proved to be nearly evenly matched as they entered into the first extra period. Neither team was able to capitalize on strong scoring opportunities and the match was forced to a second and deciding overtime period.
The second overtime period barely began to tick away as it was ended. At the 11:48 mark, Valparaiso was able to sneak one into the BU goal to take the contest with a golden goal and hand Belmont its third consecutive loss.
Valparaiso led in shots, 27-13, and corner kicks, 14-4.
Svoboda and Howard led the Bruins with three shots apiece, followed by senior Cassie Blase (Waukesha, Wisc.), and sophomores Belicia Mendiola (McKinney, Texas) and Tara Austin (Beaumont, Texas) recorded two each.
Junior Stephanie Bukovec (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) had a tremendous outing, recording 13 saves, her largest tally so far as a Bruin.
Belmont returns to action on Friday, September 11 with a road matchup at Evansville. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Live stats will be available.
WYOMING 1, MOREHEAD STATE 0

The Cowgirls outshot MSU 25-4, applying pressure through all 90 minutes. Junior forward Angela Black had two shots on goal but couldn't break through the defenders for an open shot.

It marked the third consecutive shut out by the JSU opposition, dating back to the opening weekend of the campaign. The Panthers were able to post 18 total shots in the contest, while limiting the Gamecocks' offense in the match. Jax State finished with five shots and was held to one in the second half. GSU, after taking the lead nine minutes deep into the match, collected 11 of its total in the final 45 minutes.
The Panthers were able to get passed Jax State's backline in three of the four goals. Ashley Nagy registered the first goal of the night after dribbling deep into the box and sent the ball in front of the goal. GSU extended the lead and added insurance with three goals over the final 13 minutes. Suzanne Arafa gave the Panthers a 2-0 advantage in the 77th minute after getting by a JSU defender and connecting with the net at the right post. Alexis Thomas slipped past the JSU defense in the 88th minute for the third goal of the night. GSU finished off the scoring with just three seconds left in the game as Caitlin Ray headed a serve from the right side off of a corner kick. CHICAGO, Ill. - SIUE women's soccer held UIC scoreless for more than 90 minutes, but gave up a goal in overtime to fall to the Flames 1-0.
The Cougars fall to 0-3-2 on the year while UIC improves to 2-3.
A strong defensive effort led by senior goalkeeper Jennifer Pelley was the theme of the first half. Pelley grabbed five of her nine total saves in the game in the first 45 minutes.
After a scoreless first half, SIUE came out to tally five of their eight total shots in the second half. Pelley and a defense led by Kassidy Rawdon again held the Flames scoreless, forcing the game to overtime.
The end of the second half marked a stretch of over 200 minutes that the Cougars have had a team without a goal.
Olivia Everin scored the overtime goal for UIC after a pass across the box from Emily Wauer, sliding the ball past a diving Pelley to give the Flames the win.
Sophomores Emily Grahl and Sydney Moore recorded two shots apiece for the Cougars to lead the team.
