LOYOLA CHICAGO 3, SIUE 0
CHICAGO, Ill
. - Following the sudden cancelation of the Cougars' season opener on Thursday, SIUE women's soccer fell in a 3-0 decision at reigning Missouri Valley Conference champions Loyola Chicago.

After a back-and-forth start that saw chances for both squads, the hosts would find their rhythm and net two goals in quick succession. The Rambler forward first found the back of the net in the 13th minute, followed by a second goal just two minutes later to complete her brace. The Ramblers would score for a final time in the 60th minute.

The Cougar offense could not find their footing, as a 73rd minute header from Mary Wessel and a 87th minute strike from freshman Kaitlyn Nichols marked the Red & White's lone shots on goal in the match.

However, the SIUE defense showed why they are among the most feared units in the Ohio Valley Conference, as the Ramblers failed to convert on 19 of 22 total shots and forced the hosts into three offsides fouls.Between the sticks, Taylor Spiller registered five saves in the first half and Jensen Schoch made her return to competitive play with three saves in the second.

Loyola Chicago, which improves to 2-0-0 on the young season, will head to Florida for a weekend series at Florida Atlantic (Aug. 27) and Florida Gulf Coast (Aug. 29). The Cougars will return to action on Sunday, Aug. 29, when SIUE plays at Korte Stadium for the first official match this season to host Kansas City.

PURDUE FORT WAYNE 3, MOREHEAD STATE 1
FORT WAYNE, Ind
-  Graduate student Katie Kiolbassa found the back of the net for the first time in her career Sunday at Purdue Fort Wayne, but it wasn't enough to offset three first-half goals by the host Mastodons as Morehead State soccer squad fell to 1-1 on the 2021 season with a 3-1 setback.

Kiolbassa, a midfielder from Hoffman Estates, Ill., ripped a header shot past PFW keeper Samantha Casteneda at the 57:07 mark of the second half. Kiolbassa's goal was assisted by junior forward Abby VanHoeve, from Lexington. VanHoeve vaulted into the scoring column lead for the Eagles as she also netted a goal in the season opener.

Morehead State spaced out its nine shots nearly evenly, with four in the first 45 minutes and five in the second period. Sophomore Kate Larbes got off two shots, while freshman Jenna Setter also had two. Five of the Eagles' shots were on goal.

But, it was too much to overcome as the host team scored at 14:50, 25:30 and 38:29 in the opening half to lead 3-0. The 'Dons also out-shot the Eagles 15-9.

MSU returns home for its next two matches, starting with a Thursday matchup with Evansville at 6 p.m. ET. Marshall visits Sunday at 2 p.m.

MURRAY STATE 3, LOUISIANA TECH 2
MURRAY, Ky
. - The Murray State Soccer team won 3-2 against Louisiana Tech on Sunday (Aug. 22) afternoon at Cutchin Field in Murray, Kentucky. After going down two goals to none, The Racers stormed back in victorious fashion once again.

Louisiana Tech took the early lead thanks to an Emma Jones goal in the 16th minute of the match. The Lady Techsters would score once again in the 37th minute to take a commanding lead before the Racers charged back.

Following a foul in the box by Louisiana Tech, Lauren Payne would net the Racers first score of the match on a penalty kick in the 40th minute. Just five minutes later, Symone Cooper was able to poke in a score on an assist from Morgan Bodker to even the scoring at two just before the half.

Cooper would again score in the 64th minute off of a deflected corner kick to give the Racers the lead that would stick until the end.

The Racers put up 18 total shots with 12 of them being on goal with Louisiana Tech putting six of their 14 shots on goal.

Coach Matt Lodge said that despite going down 2-0 he was much happier with the way the team started the match.

Both Cooper and Lodge said that the team will focus on playing with more maturity on the long upcoming road trip.

The Racers will be back in action next Sunday (Aug. 29) when they travel to Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio at 12 PM.

TENNESSEE TECH 1, LIBERTY 0
COOKEVILLE, Tenn.
- The Tennessee Tech soccer team checked the win column in the home opener, as the Golden Eagles used an early score and a stout defensive effort en route to a 1-0 nod over Liberty Sunday afternoon at Tech Soccer Field.

Yao Giada Zhou powered home a free kick from just outside the box in the 19th minute for her first career goal in what proved to be the difference-maker in Tech's first victory of the year against the defending ASUN Tournament champions.

"Before the game we talked about defending our home and doing whatever we needed to do to come out with a positive result today," TTU head coach Steve Springthorpe said. "A ton of credit goes to our entire team. I thought we defended well, defended hard and just battled out there for the whole game. That is a really good Liberty team over there that that plays the game very well, especially in how they possess the ball. They are a team with a lot of numbers that subs a lot, and on a hot day like it was today, that can always be a challenge. I'm proud of our overall effort. That's a great first win today."

Defensively, the Golden Eagles overcame 10 second-half shots by Liberty (0-2-0), but only three of which were on-point. Overall, Tech (1-1-0) was outshot, 12-3, but made the most of their efforts with all three shots on-goal, highlighted by the Giada Zhou score. Chloe Smith was responsible for the other two attempts on-frame with drives in the 51st and 74th minutes.

"Over the last two games between the contest at Vanderbilt and then today, I thought we were very organized," Springthorpe noted. "As [associate head coach] Corey [Boyd] would always say 'put a shift in' and that's what we did a lot in the second half. You want your team to stay organized and I was happy with how we did that today and our overall commitment to the defensive side of things. Then of course when you have a great, experienced goalkeeper like we do and a back line that is experienced, you can understand why we have the ability to have success defensively."

Senior Isabelle Austin collected three saves on the way to her seventh career shutout and first this season. Liberty split the goalkeeping duties with Randi Palacios playing the first half and allowing one goal with zero stops, while Ainsley Leja posted two halts in the second stanza.

McKinley Burkett posted a match-high four shots. The Lady Flames used 22 players in the contest, while the Golden Eagles had 17 appear. Austin, Selma Askildsen, Sarah Block and Macy Carter played all 90 minutes.

Giada Zhou put the finishing touches on breaking the scoreless deadlock, but it was an initial pass from the San Michele al Tagliamento, Italy native that helped lead to the goal-scoring opportunity. Giada Zhou's through ball to Chloe Smith put Smith in a position to bang it off a Liberty defender resulting in a Tech corner. On the ensuing try, Katelyn Farmer was fouled at the edge of the box, which set up Giada Zhou's free kick and ultimately the game-winning score.

The Golden Eagles will host the University of Tennessee Thursday night in the second of a season-long three-match homestand. First kick with the Volunteers is slated for 7 p.m. CT.

EASTERN ILLINOIS 3, ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 0
CHARLESTON, Ill
. - Eastern Illinois women's soccer scored three first half goals on Sunday as the Panthers blanked Illinois Springfield 3-0 to even their mark on the 2021 season.

EIU improved to 1-1 as they had first half goals by Nicoletta Anuci (2) and Michaela Danyo.

Anuci opened the scoring in the 10th minute as she received a long pass from Lauren Frick just over midfield and raced to beat the UIS goalkeeper in a one-v-one situation.

The Panthers added an insurance goal in the 15th minute as Michaela Danyo won a race to a loose ball in the goal box and then shifted the ball and drove home a goal into the lower right corner of the net.

Anuci’s second tally of the match came in the 22nd minute as she received a pass from Zenaya Barnes and again beat the goalkeeper in a one-v-one situation.

EIU finished the match with 15 shots including eight shots on goal.

Faith Davies posted a shutout in goal for the Panthers making seven saves.

LIPSCOMB 2, AUSTIN PEAY 0
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
- Austin Peay State University goalkeeper Peyton Powell made a career-high seven saves, but it was not enough and the Governors dropped a 2-0 decision to Lipscomb, Sunday, at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.

Powell kept Austin Peay (0-2-0) in the match early, making saves on four Lipscomb (2-0-0) shots in the first 20 minutes. The Governors first scoring chance came in the seventh minute, when sophomore Tori Case fired a shot on goal, but was unable to best Lipscomb goalkeeper Kristi Jones.

In the 28th minute, the Bisons were finally able to break through when Kale'a Perry beat Powell on an unassisted breakaway goal. Despite the early flurry of shots on goal, Perry's goal was the final shot on target for the Bisons in the first half. The Govs were able to get another shot on goal late in the first period, but freshman Avryn List's 42nd-minute shot was saved by Jones and Austin Peay trailed, 1-0, at halftime.

Like the first half, Lipscomb came out firing shots to begin the second period and Powell made three more saves in the first 13 minutes out of the break. The Bisons were able to get on the board again in the 64th minute when Cami Rogers found the back of the net off a pass from Emily Patti.

The 64th-minute tally for Lipscomb was the final shot on goal of the match and the Governors were unable to comeback and knock off the Bisons on the road.

Austin Peay will be at Morgan Bros. Soccer Field for the first time this season when it hosts a 7 p.m., Friday match against Kansas State. The Govs then welcome Miami (Ohio) to Clarksville for a 4 p.m

UT MARTIN 0, LITTLE ROCK 0
LITTLE ROCK, Ark
. -   After 110 minutes of nearly identical statistical output from both sides, the University of Tennessee at Martin's encore performance on the heels of a season-opening shutout ended with the same defensive grittiness but an inability to hammer the ball into the back of the net, leading to a scoreless tie with the Little Rock Trojans on the road Sunday afternoon.

In a game of constant one-upmanship between two squads that had each won their respective season-opener 72 hours prior by combined scores of 5-0, the Skyhawks allowed themselves 11 shot opportunities against their non-conference foe while surrendering the exact same number, but couldn't translate a quadruplet feature of corner kicks across the second overtime period to end the contest in a stalemate.

Trotting to the locker room with the score still deadlocked at zero for the second halftime in a row, UT Martin narrowly edged the Trojans in the shots department at 4-3 during the 1st frame before sitting on the opposite side of the coin for the remaining 45 minutes of regulation at 7-6. Altogether, true freshman Hannah Zahn led the way in her second career start with four attempts at the net, followed by a pair of tries from Emely van der Vliet and Makayla Robinson, the latter giving UTM their first goal of the fresh season last Thursday versus Southern Illinois.

Fatigue began to settle in amidst the afternoon heat and extended runtime of the match, resulting in only a single shot for both sides during the 10-minute OT segments. Graduate midfielder Bella Roberts, who had just been subbed back into the fray moments earlier, gave the Skyhawks a golden opportunity with 10 seconds left in the first overtime, pushing what turned out to be the team's final shot of the day. Alas, the boot fell wide of the post to keep the score knotted at zero where it stayed until the final horn.

In what's becoming a theme for head coach Phil McNamara's unit through the early stages of the schedule, the Skyhawks' back four continued their superb efforts defensively thanks to the play of Kamryn Chappell, Maria Castaldo, Catey Hunt, and Parker Gelinas. Additionally, goalkeeper Erica Myers maintained her perfect track record through the first 200 minutes of the regular season, denying the opposition a goal for the second straight outing and 19th time in her five-year tenure.

Little Rock goalie Saskia Wagner equaled Myers in the back line of defense by also playing every minute of the double-overtime marathon where the two players combined for nine total saves. With Myers' starting role and lockdown performance, the graduate now stands tied for 2nd place in school history with 66 appearances in the net, now needing only three more shutouts to stand at the top of UTM's record book in that category.

Karina De Paoli and Bergros Asgeirsdottir synced for five of the Trojans' shot attempts down the stretch, the former responsible for LR's last-gasp effort in the 108th minute that was deflected on its way to the net. UT Martin dodged a major bullet towards the end of regulation when three consecutive Little Rock rifles failed to connect all in the span of 24 seconds, before the Skyhawks encountered their own chance to provide the golden goal on Roberts' attempt in the waning moments of the first overtime.

A pair of corner kick contingencies left UTM with another pivotal chance to end on a victory instead of a tied decision, although neither formation translated to a successful score 17 seconds apart from one another in the 107th minute.

Dating back to the program's inception in 1998, the Skyhawks have now ended a regular season affair against the Trojans on a tie for the third time across 10 total meetings. Coincidentally, all three occasions were scoreless conclusions, including the last time the two schools met in 2019 to transition the all-time series record to 4-3-3 in narrow favor of UT Martin.

The Skyhawks' road test has only just begun with 25% of the non-conference schedule in the books, preparing for a lengthy stay in the Hoosier State next week to battle Indiana on Thursday, August 26th before then facing Indiana State three days later. Upon capturing a 1-0 season-opening W over Valparaiso last week, IU met the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Sunday as a precursor to the UT Martin matchup. The Skyhawks will search for payback from a 2-1 defeat the only other time the two schools have crossed paths two years back, with first touch beginning at approximately 6:00 p.m.

EVANSVILLE 3, BELMONT 0
EVANSVILLE, Ind.
-  A hot, sunny day filled with multiple hydration breaks in Evansville, Ind. Belmont University fell 3-0 to the University of Evansville.

First Half:

The Bruins started off strong and calm moving the ball around the field maintaining possession and finding the holes for their passing lanes. Avery Nowak recorded the first shot for the Bruins this match

Both Belmont and Evansville have very strong defensive games, making the opportunities to score that much more difficult. Towards the end of the first half the possession became more even between both teams. Ultimately, ending the first half 0-0

Second Half:

Evansville scored three goals in similar fashion in the 47th, 50th, and 73rd minutes of the game. All three were corner kicks that were headed into the back of the net. Emilie Hill scored two and the other was scored by Monique Hill.

The Bruin bench remained loud even after Evansville scored three goals in the second half. Their support for each other and passion for their team says a lot about the program itself. In the last 10 minutes of play the Bruins fought hard to get a goal on the board. The Bruins played majority of the last five minutes in the Ace's 18. Their intensity levels and hard work did not stop until the clock reached 0:00.

This upcoming Friday August 27 will be the Home Opener for the Belmont Bruins against the Chattanooga Mocs .

Emma Brune, a sophomore from Cape Girardeau, Missouri, played in all 90 minutes Sunday. She extended her streak of playing every minute of regulation to 14-straight games dating back to this past spring's 2020-21 season.

For Maryville, a Division II institution in St. Louis, Missouri, Sunday's game was an exhibition.
