MISSISSIPPI STATE 1, SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 0
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Southeast Missouri women's soccer (2-2) fell to Mississippi State (2-2) of the Southeastern Conference, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.
SEMO held the Bulldogs scoreless through the opening 45 minutes in a game that the Redhawks were outshot, 19-5.
Mississippi State held a 9-2 advantage in shots at the break with four shots on goal compared to SEMO's two.
Onyi Echegini, who was named to the SEC Coaches' Preseason Watch List, netted the game winner for Mississippi State in the 49th minute of regulation off a pass from Hannah Johnson.
Echegini and Johnson both finished with five shots including three shots on goal.
SEMO looked to have the equalizer off a header from Nadiia Ivanchenko at the 73:12 mark, but Maddy Anderson was there to bat the attempt away.
Senior Hannah Compernolle also had a prime opportunity in the 55th minute but Anderson stopped her shot to the top left corner.
Goalkeeper Bailey Redden registered eight saves including three crucial blocks in the waning moments of regulation.
Redden stopped Echegini's shot off a free kick after a Redhawks foul in the 86th minute before making a pair of stops on Johnson in the 89th and 90th minutes.
Anderson was awarded the win with five saves for MSU.
The Bulldogs had nine shots on goal compared to SEMO's five.
Compernolle, Ivanchenko, Mariah Johnson, Kate Daus and Natalie Miller each had a shot on goal Sunday.
Emma Brune, Daus and Lauren Welker played in all 90 minutes of action. For Brune, it was her 16th-straight game dating back to this past spring's 2020-21 season, playing in every minute of regulation. For Welker, it was her third-straight 90-minute game in 2021.
Elizabeth Rater made her first career start as a Redhawk, finishing with 59 minutes.
Kiana Khedoo was assessed a yellow card in the 85th minute.
Sunday's game was moved up from 1 p.m. to 12 p.m., due to inclement weather in the forecast because of Hurricane Ida.
SEMO will stay on the road for three consecutive contests. The Redhawks will travel to Evansville, Indiana, on Thursday, Sept. 2 to face the Purple Aces. First kick is slated for 6 p.m. CT. SEMO will conclude next week Sept. 5 against Indiana in Bloomington, Indiana.
UT MARTIN 2, INDIANA STATE 1
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team will enjoy a celebratory trip back home on Sunday afternoon thanks in large part to the heroics of senior striker Jill Hildreth, who parachuted two Skyhawk scores past Indiana State in the 19th and 71st minutes to hand UTM their second victory of the year in dramatic fashion by a 2-1 clip.
Overcoming the tying goal from the Sycamores with 35 minutes left on the clock, head coach Phil McNamara's unit avoided overtime with the game-clinching unassisted boot from Hildreth, who boosted her career score total to 15, including seven cash-ins since last spring. Marking the second occasion in four appearances that the Skyhawks landed a pair of goals in a single match, UT Martin improves to 2-1-1 with the non-conference triumph, ready to return home for the next three meetings riding a large wave of momentum.
Three days after a tight 1-0 defeat at the hands of Indiana, wherein the Skyhawks were only able to muster four shot attempts, that figure only rose by one against ISU on Sunday. However, Hildreth's goal encore provided UTM with just enough to eke out the thrilling win on the road. Indiana State managed two more shot attempts by the time the final seconds ticked away, although the Sycamores didn't feature nearly as much strength offensively despite that statistic, save for just the second goal allowed by UT Martin all season in the 55th minute.
Extending her season tally to 13 saves by halting five Indiana State shots for her second W of the fall, graduate keeper Erica Myers grabbed a double-whammy by making her 68th career start at the position, tying the Ohioan with Mariah Klenke (2011-14) for the most appearances in the net in school history. Over her five-year tenure in Martin, Myers has now gathered 275 saves overall as part of the Skyhawks' preventive efforts to deny the Sycamores a chance for the game-tying kick over the final 19 minutes of regulation.
True freshman attacker Makayla Robinson – who notched UTM's first of now four goals on the season 10 days earlier – logged the assist on Hildreth's first score of the season just under 20 minutes into the weekend affair on just the second look at the net of the afternoon. As a matter of fact, Hildreth was responsible for all but two of the Skyhawks' shot tries for the entire game, as the only attempts not from #17 were the first of the day from junior Catey Hunt eight minutes before the team's first goal and the other from Jill's twin sister Jaden Hildreth seconds prior to the game-winner.
UT Martin cruised into the locker room still touting the 1-0 advantage, although it wouldn't last long into the second half due to ISU's equalizer only ten minutes into the period off of Nora Henderson aided by a Mackenzie Kent assist.
Despite the blunder (the only second-half goal given up by UTM all year), the Skyhawks remained vigilant on the defensive end by only allowing the Sycamores two more shots for the rest of the day, the last of which was swatted away by Myers with just under 10 minutes left.
As Jaden Hildreth's take at the tiebreaker was narrowly avoided by ISU keeper Maddie Alexander at the 69:42 stamp, the other half of the senior sibling duo connected 32 seconds later to throw out the life jacket for the Skyhawks and send them home happy. The thrilling finish gave UT Martin their second all-time win over the Sycamores in three outings, having most recently met and defeated their Missouri Valley Conference foe seven years earlier on their home turf.
Reaching all three possible decisions – a win, loss, and tie – over their three-game road series, coach McNamara's squad will gear up for three in a row in familiar territory beginning on Thursday evening. The Lions of North Alabama will visit Martin on the second day of September for a 7:00 kickoff, representing the first meeting between the two schools in 22 years. UNA last tussled with the Skyhawks in UTM's second-ever campaign back in 1999, just managing a 4-3 overtime win which avenged a 4-2 loss the previous year.
WISCONSIN 5, EASTERN ILLINOIS 0
MADISON, Wis. - Eastern Illinois women's soccer wrapped up a tough weekend of action on the road on Sunday afternoon with a 5-0 loss at Wisconsin.
The Panthers opened the weekend with a double overtime scoreless draw on Friday evening at Purdue Fort Wayne as EIU is now 1-2-1 on the season. Wisconsin improved to 3-1.
In the match at Wisconsin the Badgers defense limited EIU to only one shot in the entire match, that coming off the foot of Karima Rangel.
Wisconsin scored three goals in the opening half with what proved to be the match winner coming in the 8th minute by Natalie Viggiano. That was the first of two goals in the contest for Viggiano as she scored the Badgers fourth goal in the 52nd minute.
Wisconsin added goals by Emma Jaskanier (17th minute), Jenna Kiraly (37th minute) and Joyelle Washington (72nd minute).
EIU rotated a number of players on to the pitch on Sunday with 18 field players seeing playing time in the contest.
GEORGIA 5, BELMONT 0
ATHENS, Ga. - Another blazing hot day in the south and a game filled with hydration breaks, perseverance, and determination. Belmont University fell short 5-0 to the University of Georgia in their fourth match of the season.
Despite the score goalie, Sarah Doyle recorded thirteen saves with twenty-nine shots against her. Doyle had a fantastic game rescuing the Bruins from some unfavorable situations. In the first fifteen minutes of the game Doyle had already recorded 4 saves.
The Bruins showed up to play and their excitement and determination did not diminish as the Bulldogs score rose. The bench remained as positive and loud as ever while the players left everything they had on the pitch.
The Bruins were successful in their passing through to their forwards and keeping their energy high throughout the match.
In the last five minutes of the match Bruins recorded 2 of their 5 shots, a true testament to their perseverance
Bulldogs' goals were scored by Daniella Murguia, Tori Penn, Morgan Hart, Danielle Lewin, Mollie Belisle

The Racers were led offensively by junior Midfielder Lauren Payne, who scored Murray State’s lone goal on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute. Chloe Barnthouse had two shots on goal for the day with Lilly Strader and Hailey Cole each having a shot on goal.

MOREHEAD STATE 1, MARSHALL 1
MOREHEAD, Ky. - Morehead State Soccer and Marshall fought to a 1-1 draw in an evenly contested matchup that was called early Sunday due to weather.
The Eagles moved to 1-2-1 on the season, picking up their second-ever draw against Marshall, the last one coming back in 2011.
Morehead State opened the scoring in the 12th minute, marking the first time the Eagles scored in the first half this season. Sidney Palla was taken down in the box, awarding a penalty kick to the Eagles, which was taken and buried by junior Colleen Swift for her second penalty kick goal of the young season.
Marshall answered in the 29th minute, however, when Morgan White outraced the Morehead State defense to set up a centering pass for Meg Jarvis, who slipped her shot past Michelle Jerantowski to equalize.
The second half saw an early opportunity for the Eagles with a corner kick in the 55th minute, but a header from Katie Kiolbassa bounced off the crossbar before being cleared away. Jerantowski continued to stand up to the constant pressure from the 'Herd, withstanding their nine shots and making five saves to keep Morehead State even with the visitors.
The game came to a halt at the 74th-minute mark, when a lightning delay forced the teams off the field. After nearly an hour delay, the teams agreed to call it a draw based on a time-limit rule to restart a match.
Morehead State will continue its season on the road, as the Eagles face off against Central Michigan on Friday at 6 p.m. ET.
SIUE 2, KANSAS CITY 1
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Despite a lightning delay that added more than an hour onto the match time, SIUE women's soccer emerged victorious in their home opener Sunday, earning a 2-1 win over Kansas City.
The match went scoreless through the opening 34 minutes, before inclement weather suspended play for a period of one hour and eleven minutes. Once play resumed, the Cougars dominated the remainder of the half and netted the first goal of the season when Sidney Christopher caught a rebound and buried it in the 44th minute.
The halftime break did not slow down the Red & White, as Angel Ikeda and MacKenzie Litzsinger registered assists on a goal from Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Player to Watch Lily Schnieders. Schnieders, who scored in the 51st minute, neatly tucked the ball into the bottom left corner that sailed past two Kansas City defenders.
The Roos, who now sit at 2-2 on the season with losses to SIUE and Wisconsin, would net their first and only goal of the match in the 87th minute; however, the visitors' comeback effort would prove too little and too late, as the Cougars would dominate second-half possession to secure their first win of the young season.
SIUE will hit the road for a weekend trip to the Hawkeye State, travelling to Des Moines, Iowa, for a Friday night fixture with Drake (Sep. 3) before closing out the weekend with a Sunday afternoon showdown against Big 12 Conference power Iowa State (Sep. 5).
MIAMI 2, AUSTIN PEAY 0
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - ATHENS, Ga.-- Austin Peay State University goalkeeper Chloé Dion recorded a career-high eight saves, but the Governors came up short and dropped a 2-0 decision to Miami (OH), Sunday, at Morgan Bros. Soccer Field.
Miami (1-2-1) was unable to solve Austin Peay's (0-4-0) keeper early in the match, as the as the junior from Mirabel, Quebec made six saves in the first 30 minutes to keep the score tied at zero. However, the RedHawks were able to find the back of the net in the 39th minute and took a 1-0 lead into halftime after Dion made her seventh save of the match in the 43rd minute.
Dion made her career-best eighth stop of the match in the 78th minute, but the save led to a Miami corner kick and the Redhawks capitalized with their second tally of the day in the same minute.
Senior Rachel Bradberry and freshman Avryn List led the Governors on the offense end, with each firing one shot in the contest.
Austin Peay will travel to the Scenic City for a 5 p.m., Friday match against Chattanooga at the UTC Sports Complex. The Govs will be back at home the following week when they host a 6 p.m., Sep. 9 match against Evansville for the annual Go4TheGoal game.
CHATTANOOGA 1, TENNESSEE TECH 0
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - A Chattanooga goal just over five minutes into overtime spoiled the ending of a season-long three-match homestand for the Tennessee Tech soccer team Sunday evening. Scoreless through regulation, Samantha Shaw powered one into the back of the net in the 96th minute to give the Mocs (2-2-0) a 1-0 extra-session victory.
Grace Klippenstein set up the winner with a cross that connected with Mackenzie Smith inside the box. Smith's extra feed found Shaw in close, who then smoked one into the upper left corner of the net for her third goal of the year. Klippenstein and Smith were both credited with assists on the play.
Despite the loss, the Golden Eagles (1-3-0) did manage to produce a season-high 10 shots, collecting six in the first stanza and four in the second. Freshman Taylor Rhodes paced the purple and gold with a career-high three attempts, including a pair of tries that nearly gave Tech a lead in regulation.
Late in the first half the 5-foot-6 rookie blasted one from well outside the box that banged off the crossbar in the 41st minute to keep the match scoreless. In the 74th minute off of a corner, Rhodes found a way to get an attempt off through heavy traffic that caused UTC keeper Abbey Saddler to making a leaping fingertip stop that ultimately saw the ball drift off the crossbar and over the net.
Rhodes' attempt was one of three shots on-goal for the Golden Eagles. Meg Ivey put one on-point in the 40th minute and Natalie Rhodes put one on-frame in the 45th minute.
Sydney Weinstein started in between the pipes and made one stop in nearly 42 minutes of action before leaving the contest with an injury. Saddler came in and went the rest of the match with two halts to her Sunday ledger.
Isabelle Austin secured six saves, including one in overtime.
The Mocs posted 13 shots in the affair, led by Mackenzie Smith and Kelly Tuerff's three tries apiece.
With Tech's season-long three-match homestand now in the rearview mirror, the Golden Eagles will take aim on a two-match weekend road swing. TTU will head to Western Kentucky for a 4 p.m. CT Friday, Sept. 3 meeting, before closing out the brief stretch away from Cookeville with a Sunday, Sept. 5 affair at Xavier. Sunday's first kick is scheduled for noon CT.
