MOREHEAD, Ky. - The offense found its way for Morehead State, as the Eagles put together another strong defensive outing to kick off Family Weekend with a 2-1 victory over VMI Friday.
The victory moves the Eagles to 2-4-1 on the season, and improves their record at MSU Recreation and Wellness Field to 2-1-1 on the season.
The offensive success was much needed for a Morehead State team who has generated countless chances throughout the season, but have had issues scoring goals. The Eagles put eight shots on goal against VMI, while matching their season high in goals.
Nevertheless, the story was once again junior goaltender Michelle Jerantowski, who put in another stellar effort in net. Jerantowski set a new career high with seven saves, as she held the Keydets off the board for nearly the entire match before finally allowing a goal in the waning seconds.
Morehead State opened the scoring in the 15th minute, when a scramble in front of VMI's goal resulted in a Kate Larbes header finding the back of the net for her first goal of her career.
After numerous chances, which included a steady presence of Katie Kiolbassa, who posted five shots, three of which were on goal, the Eagles finally broke through in the second half. The Eagles took advantage of a defensive miscue from VMI, as Abby Vanhoeve found freshman Sidney Palla, who also scored the first goal of her career.
Morehead State will look to continue their momentum next week, as the Eagles head to Oxford, Ohio to take on Miami (OH) on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. ET.
