SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 1, MISSOURI STATE 0
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri women's soccer (3-5) wrapped up its 2021 non-conference slate with a 1-0 victory over in-state rival, Missouri State (4-3-3, 1-0-0 Missouri Valley) Sunday at Houck Field.
Emma Brune scored her first goal of the season and Bailey Redden made eight saves for her second shutout in 2021.
Brune converted her third career goal on a header off a corner kick in the 35th minute. Kate Daus provided the service for the game-winner.
For Daus, a senior from Lindbergh, Missouri, it was her first career assist at SEMO.
Brune paced all field players with four shots including two shots on goal, competing in all 90 minutes. She started at forward and moved to midfield midway through the first half.
Brune has now played in all 720 minutes this season for SEMO and is the only Redhawk to play in every minute of regulation in 2021. The sophomore from Cape Girardeau, Missouri, extended her streak of playing every minute of regulation to 20-straight games dating back to this past spring's 2020-21 season.
Lauren Welker, Lexi Grote and Natalie Jackson also competed in the full 90 minutes Sunday. Grote and Jackson anchored the backline on defense. It was Grote's first match in 2021, playing the entire contest.
The Redhawks looked to increase their lead to 2-0 but Nadiia Ivanchenko's first-touch volleyball smacked the post in the waning moments of the first half.
Missouri State outshot SEMO, 12-9, including eight to four on shots on target. The Redhawks led the shot margin 6-4 in the opening 45 minutes.
Kennady Orlick paced Missouri State with three shots on goal.
Welker, Hannah Compernolle (SOG), Abby Tremain (SOG), Elizabeth Rater, Ivanchenko and Anne-Clara Couturier each had a shot in the win.
Rater made her second-straight start in the midfield and fourth in the past five games.
Redden made eight saves including five in the second half for her second shutout of the season. She now ranks third all-time for saves (258), fourth for solo shutouts (16) and fifth for wins (24) in SEMO program history.
Katherine Montgomery made three saves in the loss for the Bears.
SEMO earned six corner kick opportunities compared to Missouri State's two.
Three yellow cards were assessed Sunday including to both team's benches and MSU's Jenna Anderson.
With the win, SEMO halted its losing streak to four games and concluded its goal drought at four.
The Redhawks conclude non-conference play with a record of 3-5.
Sunday marked SEMO's annual Meg Herndon Memorial Green Up Game presented by Mid-America Transplant. The Redhawks honored former Redhawk Meg Herndon who was tragically involved in a truck-scooter accident in 2012. SEMO wore specialty green and blue uniforms to support organ and tissue donation.
Cindy Silvey, Meg Herndon's mother, presented a check to the Meg Herndon Scholarship Fund prior to the game Sunday.
Tremain, a senior nursing major like Herndon, was named the recipient of the Meg Herndon Scholarship for the third-straight season.
SEMO next opens its 2021 Ohio Valley Conference slate Sunday, Sept. 26 against Belmont. First kick is set for 1 p.m., CT at Houck Field.
MURRAY STATE 3, SOUTHERN ILLINOIS 1
MURRAY, Ky. - The Murray State Women’s Soccer team won 3-1 over the Southern Illinois Salukis on Sunday afternoon at Cutchin Field in Murray, KY. With rain throughout the game, the Racers were able to net goals from Morgan Bodker, Rebecca Kubin, and Riley Johnson to secure the victory.
Bodker, a freshman Defender, put her second goal of the season in the net on an Abby Jones assist in the 21st minute of the match to give the Racers an early lead. The assist extends Jones’ career assist record to 25 total assists.
SIU would tie the game before the half on a 25th minute goal by Hailey Blanchard on an assist by Sam Dodd.
After the half the Racers would come out hot to put in the go-ahead goal just six minutes into the half in the 51st minute. Rebecca Kubin scored her 27th career goal on an assist from Bodker on a free kick from near midfield.
Murray State would extend their lead in the 80th minute on Riley Johnson’s first career goal on an assist from Kubin to make the score 3-1.
Goalkeeper Jenna Villacres had seven saves on the day and allowed just one goal to earn the win in the net.
The Racers had 19 shots on the day, 11 of which were on goal. Murray State also led the corner kick count 3-2 over the Salukis.
The Racers will be back in action next Sunday (Sept. 26) at 1 pm against Cincinnati at Cutchin Field in Murray, Kentucky.
TEXAS 3, SIUE 0
AUSTIN, Texas - The Cougars never quit, shutting out the Longhorns for the final 70 minutes on Sunday afternoon; however, a blazing fast start gave the hosts a 3-0 win in SIUE's non-conference finale.
The Texas heat made its presence known, as the field temperature stood at nearly 100 degrees at kickoff. All three Longhorns goals were scored in the first 19 minutes of action, netting the match opener in the fourth minute and following with the second just 10 minutes later. Texas would score their third in the 19th minute. However, that would be the final time the Longhorns would find the back of the net, as the Cougar defense found its footing and held Texas to just four shots on goal in the remaining 71 minutes of play. The first half would also see tremendous chances at goal for SIUE, first from Grace Cobb in the 40th minute and a second from Taylor Dolt just before the halftime whistle.
The second half saw the Cougars find their stride, playing neck-and-neck with Texas through the entire final 45 minutes. Andrea Frerker led the charge, putting two shots on goal in the half. Angel Ikeda also took an attempt which sailed wide right. Bella Henderson, who stepped between the sticks for the second half, recorded a match-high three saves in 45 minutes played. The Cougars as a team also showed their discipline, not recording a single foul in the second half.
SIUE closes out non-conference play at 3-4, with a pair of those losses coming against Big 12 Conference opponents. The Cougars will open Ohio Valley Conference play a week from today, staying on the road for a Sunday afternoon showdown at Tennessee Tech. SIUE will play their OVC home opener on Sunday, October 3, when the Cougars welcome Morehead State to the friendly confines of Korte Stadium.
ARKANSAS 4, UT MARTIN 0
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Exactly one week after taking their only home defeat of the fall campaign at the hands of Western Carolina, the University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team witnessed the same fate on Sunday afternoon in their fourth road trip of the semester, giving up a season-high 25 shots to Arkansas in route to a 4-0 shutout loss in Fayetteville.
It took eight meetings for any of the Skyhawks’ opponents to secure more than one score against an exceptionally-talented back line, although the Razorbacks smashed through that barrier to the tune of two scores in either half to drop UTM to 4-3-1 overall. Last season’s Southeastern Conference Tournament runner-up finisher, Arkansas cruises to their sixth consecutive win on the year by a mesmerizing margin of 25-2 which just so happened to be the shot discrepancy on Sunday while UT Martin was held scoreless for the second straight bout.
Graduate goalkeeper Erica Myers endured an extremely busy 90-minute stretch that saw a season-best 12 saves – only one fewer than her career-best in 2019 vs. Arkansas State – although a quartet of strikes from Jessica De Filippo, Ava Tankersley, Parker Goins, and Cora Duininck proved far too much to overcome for an offense that only registered two shot attempts for the entire match, a 2021 low.
While Myers ended the day with the third double-digit save output of her five-year collegiate career, the Razorbacks didn’t waste any time putting themselves on the board, as Anna Podojil found De Filippo at the 12:48 stamp to successfully convert their first shot of the day. 14 minutes later, the Arkansas lead was jolted to a deuce after Goins received a lead pass from Sophia Aragon to make it 2-0 before the Skyhawks had mustered a shot.
By the time UT Martin finally recorded that first shot try (off the leg of Jill Hildreth) all the way into the 64th minute, the Razorbacks had increased the deficit to 3-0 nearly two minutes earlier, doing so off a Brooke Roberts assist to Duininck. After getting the home squad on the board in the early going, De Filippo took a turn at the assist in the team’s final goal of the weekend, aiding Tankersley to the 4-0 ending decision.
Hildreth concluded the non-conference bout as the only Skyhawk to put forth a shot with both of the team’s looks at the net, leading to a relatively simple day for Razorback keeper Hannah Warner who only needed a single save to keep UTM off the board for the fourth time in eight appearances this season.
Kamryn Chappell and Parker Gelinas tallied all 90 minutes on the field Sunday, where Maria Castaldo and Catey Hunt came close to that same feat with 87 and 86 minutes respectively as key components of the Skyhawks’ defensive unit that ultimately surrendered at least four goals in a singular outing for the first time since September 2019.
Two days after toppling the 13th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers by a 3-1 clip in the SEC opener, Arkansas polished off its non-conference resume in superb fashion while UT Martin prepares for Ohio Valley Conference duties one week from today for their next scheduled contest.
Headed back to the drawing board for a third-straight seven-day absence between competition, the Skyhawks and head coach Phil McNamara will look to rebound from their first-ever meeting against Arkansas on September 26th, visiting Clarksville, Tenn. for the OVC opener against the Austin Peay Governors.
A 2-0 winner over AP last spring (also a road meeting for the Skyhawks), the recent series between the in-state rivals has tilted heavily in UTM’s favor, achieving the W in each of the last three matchups against the Governors by a margin of 9-0. Austin Peay holds a 3-4-1 overall record at the time of writing, hosting North Dakota this Thursday before then battling Coach McNamara’s group three days later.
UT Martin’s first OVC duel of the fall next Sunday will get underway at approximately 1:00 p.m.
MOREHEAD STATE 0, CHATTANOOGA 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - After a lengthy delay and 110 minutes, neither Morehead State nor Chattanooga could break through and score, as soccer wrapped up non-conference play on a rain soaked afternoon with a scoreless draw against the Mocs.
The draw moves the Eagles to 2-5-2 on the season, but does give Morehead State their first positive result on the road this season.
The Morehead State offense attacked Chattanooga throughout the afternoon, putting up a season high 14 shots against the Mocs. Junior Abby Vanhoeve and senior Colleen Swift, who both had two shots on goal, paced the Eagles offense.
Junior goaltender Michelle Jerantowski stopped all six shots she faced for her second shutout of the year and the third of her Morehead State career. The performance also marked the first overtime shutout of Jerantowski's collegiate career.
After an hour and fifteen-minute delay due to poor weather and field conditions, the Eagles opened the game fast with shots from both Abby Vanhoeve and Nicole Fiantaco within the first seven minutes, but couldn't get one past the Chattanooga goaltender. The Mocs would eventually respond with a chance of their own in the 31st minute, but Jerantowski stopped back-to-back shots.
After a back and forth second half, the Eagles ended with a flurry over the last ten minutes, getting shots from Sarah Faloon, Gabby Nastasi and Colleen Swift to go alongside three corner kicks, but they still could not find the tiebreaking goal, sending the game to overtime.
Morehead State maintained their offensive pressure in the first overtime, but Vanhoeve and Fiantaco again saw their shots on goal stopped to keep the game scoreless. A fast paced second overtime featured four shots from the Mocs and one from Morehead State, a chance from Allie Bush, but both goaltenders stood tall once more, ending the game in a scoreless draw.
Next up for Morehead State, they finish their three game road swing by opening OVC play at Eastern Illinois on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET.
