LINDENWOOD 1, MURRAY STATE 0
ST. CHARLES, Mo. - On a nice cool Thursday afternoon, the Lindenwood women's soccer team (2-2-0, 0-0-0 OVC) hosted Murray State (1-4-0, 0-0-0 MVC), in a tightly contested match. The Lions would score one late in the second half to win 1-0 over Murray State and earn head coach Dave Musso his 200th career win as a coach.
In the first half, both teams were held scoreless, with the Lions giving up five shots and the Racers giving up six shots. The Lions had one shot on cage, while giving up two to the Racers. The Lions had four individuals in the first half take shots. The Lions would go into the second tied 0-0 to the Racers.
In the second half, much like the first, stingy defense was the name of the game. Both teams were held scoreless till the 82nd minute. In the 82nd minute, Anna Johnson would put one over the goalie from a right footed shot. The Lions would lead 1-0. Defense remained a key part for the last few minutes of the game for the Lions to seal the deal. The Lions would keep the Racers offense at bay to end up victorious.
Erika Anstine would record the shutout in net, making four saves.
The Lions will host Southern Illinois, on Sunday, September 3rd at 1:00 pm.
EASTERN ILLINOIS 0, PURDUE FORT WAYNE 0
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Eastern Illinois women's soccer picks up its first shutout of the season as the Panthers posted a 0-0 draw at Purdue Fort Wayne. With the result, the Panthers are now 1-2-2 on the season while the Mastodons move to a 2-2-1 overall record.
Freshman goalkeeper Ashlyn Hoover added two saves in net to mark the first clean sheet of her college career as well as the first shutout of the season for the Panthers.
EIU started the game strong on offense. Within the first five minutes, Ella Onstott, Elisa Solis, and Alex Tetteh added a shot each forcing their goalkeeper to make three saves straightaway. EIU then kept good possession of the ball as the Panthers kept looking for opportunities to go through PFW's defense. The initial half ended with the Panthers having six total shots and three being on target. In the 6th minute, Ashlyn Hoover saved what turned out to be the Mastodon's only shot on goal throughout the entire initial half.
As the second half started, PFW tried to keep possession of the ball more often. However, EIU's defense has shown its strength to hold off PFW's offense. On the counter, EIU was able to create some danger to PFW's defenders, but not enough to avoid the scoreless end of the match.
Despite the final result, EIU has shown good improvement offensively, especially in the first half. The Panthers have possessed the ball well and controlled most of the action on their attacking third of the field.
EIU will now return home to host Illinois State on Thursday, Sept. 7.
MIAMI (OHIO)1, SOUTHERN INDIANA 0
OXFORD, Ohio - University of Southern Indiana Women's Soccer faced a tough road test against Miami University (Ohio) and the Redhawks' offense on Thursday evening, but the Screaming Eagles came up just shy in a 1-0 loss.
With Thursday's result, USI dropped to 0-4-1 on the season, while Miami moved to 2-2-1. Thursday was the Screaming Eagles' third straight game determined by a one-goal difference.
Thursday's match started in a defensive struggle, as neither side allowed many quality shooting windows in the opening minutes of the first half. Southern Indiana's defense blocked one shot from Miami in the sixth minute. USI had its first opportunity in the 10th minute on a shot on goal from sophomore defender Brynn Quick (Cottage Grove, Minnesota) that was saved.
After the 25-minute mark, both offenses came alive and fired away at goal. The Screaming Eagles' defense got involved in the attack again in the 32nd minute when redshirt freshman Abby Rhoutsong (Newburgh, Indiana) had her shot saved by the Redhawks' freshman goalkeeper Dominique Popa. Minutes later, junior midfielder Adriana Berruti's (Berwyn, Illinois) attempt was kept out of the goal by Popa.
Meanwhile, USI sophomore keeper Anna Markland (Hoover, Alabama) collected multiple saves on the other end of the field, doing her best to keep Miami off the scoreboard. However, the Redhawks broke through right before halftime with a goal in the 43rd minute, taking a 1-0 lead into the break. Nine of 14 combined first-half shots between the two teams came after the 25-minute mark.
At the start of the second half, the Redhawks came out attacking, taking five shots in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza. As the second half waned on, USI's defense stood tall and kept the match a one-goal contest. The physicality and foul count also picked up. Unfortunately, for the Screaming Eagles, the offense was held without a shot in the second half. USI was outshot 10-0 by the Redhawks in the second 45 minutes, but USI's defense remained strong to keep it a one-goal match and keep Southern Indiana in the game.
For the match, Miami totaled 20 shots compared to USI's four. The Redhawks had seven shots on goal, while USI put three on target. There were 24 total fouls, including three yellow cards in the contest. Senior midfielder Paige Vanek (St. Charles, Missouri) recorded USI's other shot on the night.
