GEORGIA 11, EASTERN ILLINOIS 1
ATHENS, Ga. - Eastern Illinois allowed six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Panthers lost the final weekend game of the season opening series at Georgia, 11-1, on Sunday afternoon.
EIU dropped to 0-3 on the season while Georgia improved to 3-0.
Stephen Wrenn tripled to open the bottom of the first for UGA as they plated runs in the first and third inning. The Bulldogs then took advantage of an error early in the fifth and blew the game open with six runs. EIU starter Garrison Stenger (0-1) suffered the loss.
EIU put together some late offense as the Panthers scored in the ninth. Demetre Taylor tripled and came around to score on a base hit by Brant Valach. Taylor was 2-of-4 as the Panthers were limited to five hits.
David Sosebee (1-0) picked up the win for Georgia. Wrenn was 3-of-5 with two runs scored.
JACKSON STATE 9, UT MARTIN 4
JACKSON, Miss. - The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team outhit host Jackson State by a 14-8 margin but the Tigers scored six runs in the first two innings on their way to a 9-4 win at Braddy Field.
The Skyhawk offense was led by Matt Hirsch and Andrew Castillo, who each had three hits apiece. Taylor Douglas and Nico Zych also tallied multi-hit outings for UT Martin, who had eight of its starters hit safely today.
On the mound, Dillon Symon, Cole Schaenzer, Chris Roe and Gary Price combined to allow just one run and three hits over 4.2 innings of relief.
Jackson State, the defending Southwestern Athletic Conference champion, pushed across one unearned run in the bottom of the first before scoring five runs in the bottom of the second – all with two outs.
UT Martin was able to get a pair of baserunners aboard in the top of the third, as Hirsch was hit by a pitch and Mike Murphy singled. However, the Skyhawks were not able to cut into their deficit.
Dalton Potts produced a shutout third inning on the mound, allowing UT Martin to gain some momentum in the top of the fourth. Zych and Paublini each singled to lead off the frame and after Castillo hit into a fielder’s choice, Mikey Nantze singled home Zych and Hirsch singled in Castillo to make the score 6-2.
The Tigers tacked on two runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth inning before Symon needed only 11 pitches to get through a scoreless sixth frame.
The Skyhawks got back on the scoreboard in the seventh inning. Murphy reached on an error and would advance to third on a Douglas single. Murphy would then score on a balk to make the score 9-3.
Schaenzer and Roe combined for a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning. Hirsch and Fletcher Johnson pieced together back-to-back one-out singles in the eighth but the Skyhawks couldn’t manufacture a run.
Price made short work of the Tigers in the eighth, inducing a groundout and a pair of strikeouts over a perfect frame.
Douglas launched a homer on the first pitch of the top of the ninth, extending UT Martin’s streak to four games with a round tripper to start off the season. Castillo would later add a single but that would be the only other offense that the Skyhawks could muster.
SOUTHERN MISS 6, MURRAY STATE 5
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Murray State baseball team’s late rally fell short Sunday in the series finale at Southern Mississippi as the Racers fell 6-5 in game three. MSU trailed 6-2 in the eighth before getting three runs in the inning to make things interesting.
After a scoreless first inning for both teams, Southern Miss. (3-0) was able to take a 3-0 lead after a one-run second inning and two-run third. The Racers (0-3) responded in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs of their own. Kipp Moore drew a bases loaded walk in the inning to get MSU on the board for the first time and Matt McGowan brought in Nick Moore with a fielder’s choice RBI later in the inning.
USM however, would respond with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning to go up 5-2 and added another in the sixth to make it a 6-2 deficit for MSU. Murray State then went to work with its three-run eighth inning.
Derek Yoder and Dalton West opened the inning with back-to-back doubles. Reed Thompson provided a pinch-hit single to bring home pinch runner Clay Kelly to make the score 6-4. It was 6-5 after a Matthew Johnson RBI double to left scored K. Moore. The Golden Eagles were able to lockdown the rest of the inning, inducing back-to-back groundouts to get out of the jam.
Ryan Milton came on in the ninth to pick up his second save of the series for Southern Miss. Milton struck-out Tyler Lawrence and N. Moore and got Yoder to fly out to right to end the game and the series.
Andrew Bramley took the loss in the game. Bramley started the contest and pitched 2.1 innings, allowing three runs off four hits and walking four batters. Tyler Anderson and John Lollar each pitched well in relief in the contest. Lollar allowed one run on a pair of hits in three innings of work while Anderson pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth inning for the Racers.
Three Racers, Brock Downey, Yoder and West each had a pair of hits in the loss as Murray collected 12 hits overall, its most of the series. MSU had four extra-base hits in the loss, all doubles, coming from Johnson, Lawrence, West and Yoder.
OKLAHOMA 9, SIUE 1
NORMAN, Okla. - SIUE managed just five hits in a 9-1 to Oklahoma Sunday in the finale of a weekend baseball series at L. Dale Mitchell Field.
SIUE fell to 0-3 after the weekend which included a pair of losses to Oklahoma and a loss to Notre Dame. Oklahoma improved to 3-2 with the win.
Oklahoma scored a single runs in the second and third innings against SIUE starter Mike Miller. Miller allowed just the two runs, only one earned, on two hits over three innings. He walked two and struck out two.
Oklahoma tacked on five unearned runs on just a single hit in the fourth inning against reliever Caleb Wilkerson. The Cougars committed three errors in the inning. Wilkerson pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing the five earned runs. He walked three and did not strike out a batter.
Brendan Miller allowed a run and walked five over 1 1/3 innings. Jacob Stewart tossed two innings in relief, allowing a run on two hits.
The only SIUE run came in the sixth inning. Parker Guinn led off the inning with a double. Guinn scored on a groundout by Denton Reed which made it 8-1.
Aside from Guinn, Nick Lombardo, Austin Verschoore, Zach Little, and Chase Green each had single hits. Green has had a hit in each of the season's first three games and has a hit in 20 straight games dating back to last year.
Oklahoma's Robert Tasin started and tossed five scoreless innings for the win. He struck out three. Austin O'Brien led the Sooners at the plate. He was 3 for 5 with two RBIs and a run.
#34 SAN DIEGO 6, MOREHEAD STATE 5
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The San Diego baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth Sunday to hand the Morehead State Eagles a 6-5 defeat at Fowler Park.
Morehead State, which slipped to 3-1, still claimed the series with wins on Friday and Saturday. The Toreros, who were ranked No. 34 in the Collegiate Baseball preseason poll, moved to 1-3.
Morehead State took a 5-3 cushion into the final inning, but USD designated hitter Aiden Stinnett knocked a two-out, two-run single to right field to score the tying run, and right fielder Connor Jauch executed a bunt single down the third base line to score the winning run off MSU junior closer Craig Pearcy.
Pearcy, who collected saves in both wins Saturday, fell to 0-1. USD left-hander Jacob Hill (1-0) was credited with the win, surrendering just one hit in the eighth and ninth frames.
Stinnett, shortstop Kyle Holder and catcher Colton Waltner led the Toreros with two hits apiece. The host club produced 10 hits off four Morehead State pitchers.
Freshman pitcher David Calderon made his first career start for the Eagles, throwing five innings and allowing six hits and three runs.
MSU's hitters had 12 hits as every player in the starting lineup registered at least one. Senior first baseman Kane Sweeney's 3-for-4 day highlighted the stat sheet, including his first homer of the year in the ninth inning. Freshman second baseman Evan Warden notched two hits, and senior shortstop Robby Spencer delivered a two-run home run in the fifth that put his team on top 4-3.
