ST. LOUIS - The Southeast Missouri baseball team defeated Saint Louis University Tuesday, 9-7. Southeast has scored 34 runs in their last three games and are sporting a three-game winning streak.
Southeast returns to .500 on the season at 7-7. Saint Louis is 8-7 after the loss.
Saint Louis touched home first when Jake Henson homered to left field in the second inning, giving the Billikens a 1-0 lead.
The Redhawks not only tied the game in the top of the third, they took a massive lead on the Billikens. Branden Boggetto hit a leadoff double followed by Clayton Evans laying down a bunt for a hit. Boggetto scored on a sac fly from Trevor Ezell. Jason Blum was hit by a pitch then Garrett Gandolfo hit a monster home run to right to put Southeast up 4-1. After a walk and a strikeout, Cole Ferguson hit a two-out, two-run double to center, plating Ryan Rippee and Andy Lennington. Boggetto switched places with Ferguson with his second double of the inning to extend the lead to 7-1 in the third.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Henson hit his second home run of the day in as many at-bats, this time a two-run homer, to make it 7-3. Redhawk starter Garret Stockton was pulled for Ryan Lenaburg. Josh Bunselmeyer followed with a solo home run of his own to make it 7-4 after four innings.
The Billikens scored an unearned run off Lenaburg in the fifth inning to continue chipping away at the Redhawk lead, 7-5.
It became an all-new ballgame in the bottom of the sixth inning. Alex Siddle inherited runners on second and third with one out. James Morisano grounded out to score a run and put the tying run on third. Alex King singled up the middle to tie the game at 7-7 going to the seventh inning.
The Redhawks recaptured the lead in the eighth inning. Ezell drew a leadoff walk to start the inning. He advanced to second on a sac bunt by Blum and third on a groundout. Rippee was intentionally walked and took second on a fielder's indifference. A wild pitch allowed Ezell to score and Rippee take third. Dalton Hewitt then dropped a single into shallow center field to put Southeast up 9-7.
Matthew Wade came in and pitched the ninth inning, sending the Billiken hitters down in order to record his first career save as a Redhawk.
Southeast outhit Saint Louis 12-9 in the game. Boggetto finished with three hits and Rippee finished with two of his own.
Siddle (1-0) earned the win in two and two-thirds innings of scoreless baseball. He allowed only two hits, struck out four hitters, and walked none. Wade had two strikeouts in the ninth en route to the save.
Robert Plohr (1-3) recorded the loss for SLU. He pitched four and two-thirds innings in relief and allowed the go-ahead runs in the eighth. He had six walks and no strikeouts.
BELMONT 9, SOUTHERN ILLINOIS 4
NASHVILLE - Although the weather did not look like it would hold out, the Bruins were only affected by a 4 minute rain delay. The Bruins powered past the Southern Illinois Salukis winning 9-4. At the plate, 6 of Belmont's 9 hit were doubles
Lefty, Patrick McGrath received the start and win on the mound for the Bruins. He is now 1-1 for the season and had 7 strikeouts in 6 innings pitched. He allowed only 2 earned runs on four hits.
Both Drew Ferguson and Tyler Fullerton went two for three at the plate. Both players contributed a double to the game and a total 3 RBI.
The Bruins placed some numbers on the board in the bottom of the second inning thanks to the help of Southern Illinois's pitching. Tyler Fullerton and Tyler Walsh led off the inning with a pair of hit by pitches. Desi Ammons then advanced to first on a walk. Bases are now loaded. Drake Byrd steps up to the plate and hits a double to right center to plate Walsh and Fullerton. With Ammons on second and Byrd on second. Brennan Washington grounded out to third which plated Ammons. William Dodd reached first on a fielder's choice which was followed by a walk for Alec Diamond. A sacrifice fly for Ferguson scored Byrd. Another two walks from SIU follow to plate the 5th batter. The Bruins scored 5 runs in the second inning off of only one hit.
The Bruins posted another solid inning bottom of the six after giving up four runs to the Salukis. Dom Veltri came in as a pinch hitter for Washington and led off with a hard hit double down the right field line. Dodd placed a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher to advance Veltri to third. Diamond stepped up to the plate and hit a single to left field and advanced to second off a throwing error, Veltri Scored. This brought Belmont's lead to 6-3. With Diamond on second, both Ferguson and Beaty hit short flys to the right side to score Diamond and Ferguson. The lead after the 6th inning grew to 8-3.
In the 7th, Desi Ammons led off with a walk and received his first stolen base of the season. Ammons advanced to third on a Sacrifice fly by Veltri, now in scoring position. Dodd stepped up to the plate with a clutch double to right field to plate Ammons.
The Bruins defeated the Southern Illinois Salukis with 6 powerful doubles.
