EASTERN KENTUCKY 3, OAKLAND 2
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Sophomore infielder Ryland Kerr’s three RBIs pushed the Eastern Kentucky University baseball team past the Oakland Golden Grizzlies 3-2 Friday afternoon at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in Lexington, Kentucky.
Both teams were scoreless going into the bottom of the second, when a Kerr RBI double to right centered put the Colonels (1-5) on top 1-0, scoring Logan Starnes.
However, the Golden Bears (1-5) would respond, as Myles Zilinsky homered to right center in the top of the third to even up the score at 1-1.
A Kerr RBI single through the right side stopped the Oakland momentum in the bottom of the fourth, as Ben Fisher would come in to score to make it 2-1. Kerr, once again, would score Brenden Overton in the bottom of the sixth on a single to right field, extending the Colonel lead to 3-1.
Oakland would not go down without a fight. In the top of the ninth, Connor Fannon singled to the right side with two runners on base, scoring one, cutting the deficit to 3-2. On the next batter, the Golden Bears looked to add one more on base and possibly score another, but Cornell Nixon made a great play coming from second base to get the out at first. Caleb Johnson would strikeout the next batter to seal the win.
Jack Piekos led EKU on the mound, fanning 11 batters on the day, while only giving up one hit and one earned run in seven innings.
As a team, the Colonels tallied eight hits with no errors.
#6 NC STATE 9, AUSTIN PEAY 3
RALEIGHT, N.C. - Pitcher Alex Robles and first baseman Dre Gleason each hit home runs but Austin Peay State University’s baseball team could not keep pace with nationally-ranked North Carolina State in a 9-3 loss, Friday, at Doak Field.
North Carolina State (3-1) leaned on right fielder Brock Deatherage and left fielder Brett Kinneman to jump out to an early lead and then pad that advantage. Deatherage doubled to start the bottom of the second and Kinneman drove him in with a ground out for the 1-0 lead. One inning later, Deatherage added to the Wolfpack’s lead with a two-run home run.
Austin Peay (3-2) threatened in the third when shortstop Kyle Wilson and second baseman Garrett Giovannelli hit back-to-back singles. Left fielder Cayce Bredlau followed with a line drive single to left field, but Kinneman’s throw home arrived just in time to catch Wilson and end the threat.
Robles would help his own cause in the fourth inning with a two-out solo home run to left field, cutting the deficit to 3-1. The Govs would again threaten when Gleason was hit by a pitch and sophomore catcher Alex Sala singled to right. But North Carolina State starter Sean Adler struck out the next batter to end another Govs threat.
The Wolfpack got that run back in the bottom of the fourth, Deatherage again doing the damage with a RBI double. Two innings later Kinneman supplied the Wolfpack insurance with a three-run home run and a 7-1 lead.
Both teams would add two runs in the game’s final three innings, the Govs final two runs coming courtesy Gleason’s two-run home run in the ninth.
Robles (1-1) battled through four innings, facing 22 batters and allowed four runs on eight hits. The Govs bullpen surrendered five runs (three earned) over the final four innings.
Bredlau would lead the Govs offense with a 2-for-2 outing that included a walk. However, his day was shortened when he fell rounding first base in the fifth inning. However, he left the game under his own power. Robles and Gleason’s lone hits were their home runs.
Deatherage led North Carolina State with a 4-for-4, three RBI outing that included two doubles and a home run while Kinneman was 1-for-4 with four RBI. The duo combined to drive in all of NCSU’s first seven runs.
Adler (2-0) picked up the win after striking out 10 of the 23 batters he faced in 5.1 innings, allowing one run while scattering six hits.
UT MARTIN 10, ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF 8
UNION CITY, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team staved off a late Arkansas-Pine Bluff rally to take down the Golden Lions 10-8 on Friday afternoon.
The Skyhawks entered the top of ninth inning on top 10-5, but a late two-out, three-run double by UAPB right fielder Jerimiah Figueroa tightened the gap. Senior reliever Alex Evans forced a soft grounder to third baseman Ryan Helgren on the following hitter to seal the third straight victory for UT Martin (3-1).
Arkansas-Pine Bluff used a pair of singles and a throwing error from UT Martin starting pitcher Dom Bazzani to get take an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Skyhawks responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first when red-hot Tyler Albright tripled to deep center and was brought home two batters later by a Tanner Wessling single.
The score remained 2-1 until a two-run line drive home run off the bat of Aderly Perez gave the Golden Lions a 4-1 lead in the top of the third. Again the gritty Skyhawks bounced back and tallied four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the 5-4 lead. Josh Hauser singled to lead off the inning while walks from Albright and Wessling loaded the bases. The Skyhawks capitalized on two separate UAPB throwing errors on a ground ball from Dan Kerwin to plate three runs and tie the game 4-4. Freshman Anthony Adduci’s sacrifice fly scored Kerwin and pushed UT Martin in front for the first time on the very next play.
Freshman Robert Worley led off the fourth with a single into right to kick start another big inning. After Hauser reached on a fielder’s choice and Albright walked, senior slugger Helgren hit a towering grand slam over the left-center wall to provide some separation and give the Skyhawks a 9-4 lead.
The Golden Lions pieced together a run in the top of the fifth on two hits and a sacrifice fly from Jacob Giron but for the third time on the day, UT Martin responded in their half of the inning with a run of their own. Worley doubled in Keylen Steen with a rope into right-center to put the Skyhawks into double-digit runs and push their lead back to 10-5.
Reliever Shane Seckinger tossed three scoreless innings in the sixth through eighth before finding some trouble in the ninth. After surrendering a couple of walks, UT Martin went to Evans to shut the door. A fly ball just out of the reach of left fielder Dan Kerwin plated three runs for UAPB but that is all that they could manage in the ninth as the Skyhawks held on for the victory.
Bazzani (1-1) earned the win, tossing five innings allowing only three earned runs and striking out eight Golden Lion hitters. Nathan Sawrie (0-2) was saddled with the loss for Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Worley (3-4, one double), Hauser (2-5, two runs scored), and Wessling (2-3, one RBI) each recorded multiple hits for the Skyhawks, while Helgren’s four RBI’s led the way in the victory.
SIUE 2, OHIO 1
EMERSON, Ga. - SIUE baseball scored a pair of two-out runs Friday to secure a 2-1 win over Ohio in the opener of a four-game series at LakePoint Sports Complex.
The Cougars are now 3-2 for the year. The Bobcats also are 3-2 to start the season.

The only run allowed by Martz came on a Spencer Ibarra home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Martz now has 12 strikeouts and just four walks over 12 innings in his first two starts combined.
The Cougars went up 1-0 in the top of the sixth inning when Dustin Woodcock led off the inning with a double and then scored on a two-out double from Brock Weimer. Weimer drove in the game-winner in the eighth inning with two outs with a single center to score Alec Skender.
Jake Rudnicki (0-1) surrendered the game-winner to Weimer in the eighth. He allowed two hits in an inning of relief for Ohio.

Weimer was 2 for 3 with the two RBIs to lead the Cougars. Mario Tursi also picked up two hits or SIUE.

In three appearances this season, McReaken is 1-0 with two saves. He has not allowed a run and has struck out four hitters in five innings.
BUFFALO 12, MURRAY STATE 10
MURRAY, Ky. - The Murray State offense put up 10 runs and collected 16 hits on Friday afternoon at Reagan Field but it was not enough as the Racers lost their home opener to visiting Buffalo, 12-10. The loss was the Racers’ first setback of the season and drops their record to 4-1.
Ryan Perkins and Davis Sims led MSU with three hits each in the loss while Perkins also scored three runs on the day and hit a solo home run, his second of the season, in the eighth. Brandon Gutzler did the most damage at the plate for MSU as he was 2-for-5 with two runs and four RBIs and also hit his third homer of the season. Aaron Bence and Jaron Robinson also had multi-hit days against the Bulls.
After a scoreless first for both teams, Buffalo (2-2) got on the scoreboard first with a big five-run top of the second and wouldn’t relinquish the lead from there. Each time the Racers would score in the contest, the Bulls would respond with runs of their own in the next inning.
A three-run third for the Racers cut the deficit to 5-3 as Gutzler, Tyler Lawrence and Ramsey Scott had three consecutive RBI singles in the inning. In the fifth, UB got those three runs back however and lengthened the lead back up to five at 8-3. After Gutzler’s two-run blast in the bottom half of the inning, the Bulls again responded in the top half of the sixth with three runs to make the score 11-5.
A two-run deficit was as close as MSU would get the rest of the way as the Racers made it an 11-9 game with four runs in the sixth inning. Bence, Gutzler, Kipp Moore and Robinson all collected ribbies in the inning.
Trevor McMurray took the loss as he got the start on the mound in the series opener. McMurray pitched 1.2 innings and allowed five runs on four hits. WIU starter Matthew Sturchio (0-2) recorded the loss. He pitched only two innings, allowing six runs on five hits. Like Southeast, WIU used four total pitchers.
Southeast played a flawless defensive game in front of a home-opening crowd of 844.
The Leatherneckes touched home in the second on a one-out ground-rule double off the bat of Dave Dobrinich, scoring Chris Tschida. Chandler worked out of the jam, stranding runners on the corners in the inning.
Singles by Chris Osborne and Robertson along with Brian Lees being grazed by a pitch loaded the bases to begin the bottom of the frame. Kyle Bottger singled to left, plating Osborne and tying the game at one. Basler singled through the left side, scoring Robertson and going up 2-1 with one out. With bases still loaded, Ezell reached on an error by the first baseman that also allowed two runs to score. Holst ripped a two-run double down the right field line to put SEMO on top 6-1 after two innings.
The Redhawks followed up a big third inning with a five-run fourth to extend the lead. One-out base hits by Robertson and Lees started the inning off. Bottger earned his second RBI of the day on a single into center. With bases juiced, Basler drove in a couple on a double to left center. Ezell flew out to left, deep enough for Danny Wright to tag up and score. Holst finished the scoring with an RBI base hit up the middle to make it 11-1 in the Redhawks' favor.
Tschida led off the fourth inning with a solo shot to left center to make it 11-2 Redhawks.
Osborne was hit by a pitch to lead off the Redhawks' half of the fourth. He scored all the way from first on a triple ripped to dead center field off the bat of Robertson, his third hit of the game. Robertson tagged up and scored on a sacrifice fly by Wright, widening the lead to 13-2.
Three more runs crossed the plate in the fifth inning for Southeast. Osborne drove in two with a one-out opposite field double. Robertson plated Osborne with his fourth hit, a double laced into left center. SEMO led 16-2 after five complete.
Southeast put up another five spot in the sixth inning to top 20 runs in the game. Wright led off the inning with a double to right center followed by a walk to Basler. Both runners scored on a triple by Ezell just fair down the right field line. After Holst was hit by a pitch, he scored on Chris Caffrey's double to right. Caffrey crossed home plate on Rentfro's first collegiate hit, poked up the middle. In his season debut, Garret Reynolds drove in Caffrey with a single into center, widening the SEMO margin 21-2.
Basler put the exclamation point on the Redhawks' offense recording his fourth RBI of the game when he drove in Berra in the bottom of the eighth to bring the score to 22-2.
The Leathernecks strung together nine hits, led by two-hit days by a trio of players.
JACKSONVILLE STATE 3, WESTERN KENTUCKY 2
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Sophomore Garrett Farmer recorded seven strikeouts in six innings, while junior Taylor Hawthorne paced the Jacksonville State offense in a 3-2 win over Western Kentucky on Friday afternoon at WKU's Nick Denes Field.
JSU moves to 3-1 on the season and has strung together three consecutive wins and has a leg-up on the Hilltoppers in the weekend series after the one-run decision.
Farmer, from Huntsville, Alabama matched his career high in innings with six frames on the mound and was one strikeout away from matching his career best with seven strikeouts against WKU. The lefthander was touched for seven of WKU's hits, but he only allowed a pair of solo runs in third and the fourth. JSU played solid defense behind him as the lone JSU error was by Farmer. He picked up his first win of the season and fifth of his career.
Hawthorne sparked the Gamecock lineup with a 3-for-4 contest at the plate, including a pair of doubles that highlighted JSU's solo runs in the first and third. Inserted in to the two-spot in the line up, the Prattville, Alabama shortstop drilled a one-out double to left field in his first plate appearance and scored on Trent Simpson's ball that was misplayed by the WKU third baseman. Hawthorne produced his second double of the day with one out in the third. He was pushed across the dish on senior Josh Bobo's RBI single to centerfield. Hawthorne collected his third hit of the day in the fifth, but JSU could not take advantage of the first two batters reaching base in the frame after junior Clayton Daniel started the inning with a single.
After WKU evened the contest at 2-2 in the fourth on an RBI single by Thomas Peter, Farmer worked his way out of two Hilltopper threats in the fifth and sixth. In the fifth, WKU had runners on the corners with no outs, but Farmer battled back to get out of the jam with his sixth strikeout of the outing.
Farmer's ability to get out of the fifth led to JSU's offense manufacturing the eventual game-winning RBI in the sixth. Freshman Payton Young started the frame with a single, followed by freshman Andrew Naismith working a walk. Freshman Chase Robinson, who had a double earlier in the game, laid down a sacrifice bunt to put the Gamecocks in scoring position. Senior Peyton Williams grounded out up the middle, but Young was able to put JSU's third run on the scoreboard.
The JSU bullpen was able to nurse the 3-2 lead in the final three innings as senior Nate Sylvester, Simpson and Justin Hoyt combined to allow just one Hilltopper hit over the final three innings. Sylvester came in relief of Farmer in the seventh, while Simpson made his mound debut in the eighth. Hoyt registered his second save of the season, but had to get out of a two-out situation in the last inning.
JSU touched WKU starter Ryan Thurston for all three runs on eight hits, while Kevin Elder finished the final 3.1 innings for the Hilltoppers.
TENNESSEE TECH 13, BRADLEY 7
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Power was certainly surging for the Tennessee Tech baseball team Friday afternoon, as the Golden Eagles (5-0) muscled up for a 13-7 victory over Bradley (2-2) in the three-game series opener at Bush Stadium at the Averitt Express Baseball Complex.
The Tech squad blasted six home runs in the contest, falling just a solo bomb short of the program record of seven smashed at Kentucky in 2014. Three of the barrage of boomers came off the bat of junior Collin Harris, who tied the school record for most home runs in a single game and finished with four RBI. He joined the likes of former All-Americans Daniel Miles (2013) and A.J. Kirby-Jones (2009) as the only players in TTU history with three dingers in one outing.
Returning All-American Kevin Strohschein enjoyed his own taste of success with the stick, hammering two jack jobs of his own as part of a 3-for-5 day at the plate. He scored three runs and drove in two. It marked the third multi-home run contest of the sophomore's young career.
Bradley kick off the scoring early in the contest, snagging an early 2-0 advantage thanks to a two-run shot by Jean-Francois Garon. Strohschein answered in the bottom half of the first with his first of two solo bombzinis.
After holding the Braves scoreless in the next frame, the Tech offense jumped out in front with a three-run inning, using three straight doubles from Ryan Flick, Trevor Putzig and Matt Jones to drive in two. Sophomore Alex Junior followed with an RBI single for the third run.
The Braves tied things up in the third with a couple of runs before the Golden Eagles snagged a solo run from a sacrifice fly ball from Flick to go back in front. Bradley once again answered, evening things at 5-5 in the top of the fourth, but Harris took the opportunity to destroy the first pitch he saw for his first home run of the day.
The Tech pitching staff took over from that point, holding the potent Bradley offense to just two more runs and one earned. On the other side, the Golden Eagles crossed seven more runs across the plate, including two on Harris' second tater of the game in the sixth. The seventh saw an RBI single from Chase Chambers, a two-run boomer from Flick and Harris' third dinger while the eighth represented a single run from Strohschein's second homer.
Senior hurler Michael Wood (1-0) earned his first victory of the season, tossing five innings with six strikeouts and just one walk. Travis Moths came on for three and two thirds innings of relief, fanning six of his own with just a solo walk and one earned run allowed. Freshman Logan Walters gathered his first action of his career, garnering the final out of the game with the bases loaded.
Harris led the Golden Eagles with four RBI and tied with Strohschein with team-highs of three hits and three runs scored. Flick drove in three runs on a 2-for-4 day, scoring twice as well. Jones collected his first hit of the season and finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Chris Brown drew a career-high three walks and a run scored.
With a 5-0 record to start the 2017 season, the Golden Eagles are officially off to their best start since 1970 when the squad started 7-0 and 11-1 overall on its way to a 21-16 mark and first-place finish in the Ohio Valley Conference Eastern Division.
MOREHEAD STATE 8, ALABAMA STATE 1
HOOVER, Ala. - Junior lefthhander Aaron Leasher allowed just one run over eight inning and struck out 10 as the Morehead State Baseball team opened the Hoover Classic with an 8-1 triumph over Alabama State Friday evening at the Hoover Met Stadium.
The Eagles improved to 4-2 with their third straight win. The Hornets slipped to 1-5, also losing 9-2 earlier in the day to Iowa.
Leasher (2-0) surrendered a leadoff double but then retired 10 of the next 11 ASU batters before giving up a single in the fifth. The only run for the Hornets came across in the eighth after an error, but Leasher struck out the final two hitters.
Ziegelmeyer, a freshman, nailed down the final three outs.
Offensively, the Eagles strung together four hits in the second inning and scored three times before being effectively silenced until the seventh and eighth frames when they combined for the final four runs. Morehead State also scored twice on wild pitches and once on a passed ball.
Sophomore DH Trevor Snyder's RBI double got the Eagles on the board in the second, and junior third baseman Chase Teter added an RBI single to score junior first baseman Tyler Niemann. Teter also plated Niemann with an RBI single in the fourth.
Morehead State tacked on a trio of runs in the eighth, including junior third baseman Eli Boggess' first Division I hit and RBI.
Sophomore catcher Hunter Fain, senior rightfielder Will Schneider and Teter each had two hits apiece. Fain, Schneider, sophomore leftfielder Niko Hulsizer and sophomore shortstop Reid Leonard have now reached base in all six games, and for Fain it's now 15 straight since last season.
MISSOURI STATE 7, BELMONT 5
NASHVILLE - Belmont jumped out to an early lead in the opening innings of its Friday evening game against Missouri State at E.S. Rose Park, but the Bruins were unable put away a pesky Bears team who would prevail to win, 7-5, after a four-run eighth frame.
With the wind blowing full blast on the top of the hill, the Bruins capitalized on a pair of wind-aided doubles in the second stanza of the contest. After veteran catcher Clay Payne wore a pitch during the second at-bat of the inning, back-to-back two baggers from senior duo Tyler Walsh and Drake Byrd launched Belmont to a quick 2-0 lead before Missouri State could trigger the third out.
The Bears answered with a pair of runs themselves in the following inning and even made a bid to try and claim the lead, but a resilient Belmont squad halted their attempts. With one down and runners on second and third MSU tried to tack on its third run of the inning, but senior right fielder Brennan Washington delivered a throw to first baseman Chas Hadden who relayed the ball to Payne to swipe the runner before he could tag home plate. On the ensuing play, the wind carried a foul ball to the first base dugout where sophomore second baseman Hunter Holland stretched out and made a diving play to end the inning only allowing the Bears to knot the game up, 2-2.
A strong outing from junior hurler Tyler Vaughn kept Missouri State to just two runs through the first six innings. Vaughn matched his season-high from opening day, sitting down nine batters, including a flawless fifth stanza in which he struck out the side.
After a pair of scoreless frames, senior Nick Egli put Belmont back on top with one swing of the bat. Egli stepped to the plate and blasted a solo shot over the left field wall on the first pitch in the bottom half of the fifth. A walk and base knock put runners on first and second for Washington. The Preseason All-OVC honoree showed his power, sending one to the centerfield fence. The ball hit atop the fence and bounced in the park, robbing the veteran of a home run, but the two-run double would do. Belmont once again took the lead, 5-3.
However, after the fifth frame the Bears would silence the Bruins bats, retiring 11 their final 12 batters. During that span MSU was able to plate five unanswered runs, including a four-run seventh inning where it registered five hits and gave them a 7-5 lead that they'd never relinquish.
Belmont threw four pitchers in the final three innings with junior Austin Reynolds tallying the loss. MSU's Jake Fromson earned the win while Bryan Young collected his first save of the year.
CENTRAL ARKANSAS 10, EASTERN ILLINOIS 6
CONWAY, Ark. - Eastern Illinois attempted a late comeback in the ninth inning scoring five runs, but the Panthers came up just short as Central Arkansas earned a 10-6 series-opening win on Friday night.
Eastern Illinois dropped to 0-4 on the season, with Central Arkansas improving to 3-1 overall.
Central Arkansas broke the scoring column early in the first inning. After a pair of walks to put runners on first and second, UCA’s William Hancock hit a three-run home run to right and gave the hosts a 3-0 lead.
Eastern Illinois trimmed the Central Arkansas with a run in the top of the third inning. Hunter Beetley hit a lead-off double and later scored in the inning on a Joseph Duncan RBI single to cut the lead to 3-1.
Central Arkansas responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame Hunter Strong and Rigo Aguilar hit back-to-back doubles, with Aguilar’s driving in Strong to put the lead back to three.
The Bears extended their lead to 10-1, with a two-run sixth inning followed by a three-run seventh inning.
The Panthers would not go away quietly however as Andrew Curran started a rally with a one-out single. Duncan and Dane Topple worked back-to-back walks to load the bases for Dougie Parks. Parks blasted a grand slam over the wall in right to put the score at 10-5. Matt Dunavant followed the Parks home run with a solo shot of his own over the fence in left to trim the Central Arkansas lead even more, but that would be as close as the Panthers would get as the Central Arkansas bullpen worked out of the jam to earn the 10-6 win.
Beetley and Curran both recorded a 2-for-4 game at the Plate to lead the Panthers. Toppel reached base three times in the game, all on walks.
Brendon Allen (0-2) suffed the loss on the mound for EIU, allosing five runs in 4.2 innings. Alex Cain had a solid outing for the Panthers out of the bullpen as the senior tossed 1.2 scoreless innings.
